Start by identifying which China Construction Bank (CCB) share you mean: Shanghai A-share 601939 or Hong Kong H-share 00939. They are separate listings, so their prices, currencies, access routes and valuations should not be treated as interchangeable. Then use CCB’s latest official filings to assess its bank-specific risks and performance before comparing either share with its market price.
Identify the exact CCB share first
China Construction Bank has two ordinary-share listings: A-shares on the Shanghai Stock Exchange under 601939 and H-shares in Hong Kong under 00939. CCB says its H-shares listed on 27 October 2005 and its A-shares on 25 September 2007. The listing history and official investor materials are available from CCB Investor Relations.
| Share | Listing venue | Ticker | What to verify for your situation |
|---|---|---|---|
| A-share | Shanghai | 601939 | Trading and settlement currency, whether your broker provides access, applicable fees and taxes, and custody arrangements. |
| H-share | Hong Kong | 00939 | Trading and settlement currency, whether your broker provides access, applicable fees and taxes, and custody arrangements. |
The official listing information establishes the venue and ticker distinction, but it does not establish your personal access, tax treatment, current liquidity, or which listing offers better value. Check those details with your broker and the relevant exchange or tax authority. Do not compare a quote for one listing with a different listing’s price without accounting for share class, currency conversion, and the date and time of each observation.
Use the latest official reports, not a stale summary
At the time of this article, CCB’s investor-relations page lists its 2026 half-year report, dated 28 August 2026, and its 2026 first-quarter report, dated 29 April 2026. It also lists separate 2025 annual reports for H-shares, dated 27 April 2026, and A-shares, dated 27 March 2026, as well as interim-results presentation and webcast materials. Find them on CCB Investor Relations.
#1 Best Overall
- Open the latest interim report. Use it for the most recent reported financial position and results. Read its accounting notes, risk disclosures, capital information and ownership section alongside the headline figures.
- Compare with several annual reports. Review three to five years where available, checking that reporting bases and definitions are comparable before treating a change as a trend.
- Use presentations as a guide, not a substitute. Management materials can help explain how CCB frames results, but check the figures and definitions in the actual filing.
- Record dates and definitions. Note the reporting period, whether figures are consolidated, and how the report defines measures such as non-performing loans, coverage and capital ratios.
CCB’s financial reporting information page directs readers to Financial Highlights and annual and interim reports for detailed financial information. CCB identifies KPMG as its external auditor and says its board has five specialized committees, including an Audit Committee. These are company-stated facts; by themselves they do not establish audit quality, control effectiveness, or governance performance.
Evaluate CCB as a bank
A bank’s earnings and risk profile depend on its lending, funding, asset quality and capital—not just revenue growth or the share price. Extract the following measures from the filings and compare them over time. The checklist identifies questions to investigate; it does not imply that CCB currently has a particular strength or weakness.
Earnings and lending economics
- Net interest income and net interest margin: Track the level and direction of both, and read management’s explanation of lending and deposit-rate changes.
- Loans and deposits: Compare growth rates, funding structure and loan-book composition. Look for customer, sector and other concentrations disclosed in the report.
- Non-interest income and costs: Review fee and commission income, other non-interest income, operating costs, credit costs, return on equity and return on assets.
Asset quality and loss absorption
- Read non-performing, overdue and special-mention loan disclosures together rather than relying on one headline ratio.
- Check impairment charges, allowance coverage and write-offs, including how the report defines each measure.
- Review contingent liabilities, related-party exposures and property or real-estate exposure where described, along with the bank’s discussion of regulatory and geopolitical risks.
Capital, liquidity and dividends
- Trend capital adequacy and core tier-one capital measures, and examine the report’s liquidity and funding disclosures.
- For dividends, verify the cash amount, payout ratio, record and ex-dividend dates, currency and any election details in the relevant announcement or filing.
- Compare interim figures with full-year figures carefully; a half-year result is not automatically a full-year run rate.
Check ownership and governance in the filings
Ownership can affect how investors understand control, shareholder influence and the freely traded share base. The indexed result for CCB’s 2026 half-year report lists 292,731 registered ordinary shareholders at 30 June 2026: 257,897 A-share holders and 34,834 H-share holders. It also lists Central Huijin Investment Ltd. (Huijin) with a 54.51% holding and the Ministry of Finance with 11,589,403,973 A-shares, subject to a five-year lock-up beginning 24 June 2025. These figures are attributed to CCB’s 2026 half-year report; consult the full filing for the precise definitions, context and any qualifications before relying on them.

Ownership figures alone do not establish governance quality or predict how a share will perform. Read the report’s shareholder, related-party and governance disclosures, and distinguish company descriptions from your own assessment of oversight and minority-shareholder protections.
Keep the bank’s scale separate from its investment value
CCB reported 785 million personal customers, 12.73 million corporate customers and 14,614 outlets for 2025, as well as an approximate market capitalization of US$265.545 billion at year-end 2025. These are company-reported scale and capitalization figures, available through CCB Investor Relations. They describe the company’s size at the stated time; they do not establish that either listing is attractively valued, likely to deliver strong future returns, or low risk.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare A-shares and H-shares using same-date market data
If both listings are available to you, make the comparison from observations taken on the same date and record the data source and time. This research does not establish current prices, foreign-exchange rates, liquidity, valuation multiples or a current A/H price gap, so it cannot determine which listing is cheaper.
- Compare price-to-book and, where meaningful, an earnings-based valuation using consistent share counts, earnings periods and definitions.
- Compare dividend yield using the same dividend basis and a clearly stated share price; account for currency conversion, withholding or other taxes, payment timing and any election options relevant to you.
- Check current trading liquidity and free float using dated market or exchange data rather than inferring them from the number of registered shareholders.
- Consider how each listing’s currency and your own base currency affect the value of an investment and any dividends received.
- Confirm broker availability, custody arrangements, transaction costs and applicable tax rules for your jurisdiction before comparing expected returns.
Make the decision from evidence, not a single headline
Before investing, make sure you can identify the precise CCB security, trace your financial figures to current filings, explain the bank’s earnings and risk trends, and compare the relevant listing with dated market data. If a figure, definition or access condition cannot be verified, leave it unresolved rather than treating the A-share and H-share as equivalent or drawing a valuation conclusion from company size alone.

This is a research framework, not a buy or sell recommendation. Investing involves risk, and whether either CCB listing is suitable depends on the investor’s circumstances and independent assessment.
