The exact information depends on which systems and records were accessed; the retailer’s breach notice is the best guide to what may affect you.
What information might be exposed?
A retail breach does not automatically expose every kind of customer data. An attacker may reach a payment system, an online account database, customer-service records, or files used for returns. The contents of the affected records—and whether they were protected—determine what was exposed.
- Payment-card information: Card numbers and expiration dates may be exposed. The payment-card industry also identifies the primary account number and sensitive authentication data as targets for thieves. A breach does not necessarily reveal a full card number or security code. PCI Security Standards Council guidance describes payment data risks and the systems that need protection.
- Account credentials: Email addresses, usernames, passwords, and security-question answers can be present in account records. A password may be exposed even if it was stored using weak encryption.
- Contact and identity details: Names, home addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers are common kinds of customer-record information. Some incidents also involve dates of birth or other identity details.
- Shopping and loyalty records: Loyalty-account details, purchases, reservations, or return records can be part of the affected data. They may reveal customer activity and can help scammers tailor convincing messages.
- More sensitive identifiers: Some incidents have involved Social Security numbers or passport numbers. These are possible exposures, not information every retailer collects or every breach reveals.
What real incidents illustrate
Government cases show how widely the exposed data can vary. They are examples of particular incidents, not a measure of how often each type of information is stolen.
CafePress: account, identity, and partial payment data
In a March 2022 enforcement announcement, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) described allegations involving CafePress. The FTC said a hacker accessed millions of email addresses and passwords stored with weak encryption, as well as millions of unencrypted names, physical addresses, and security-question answers. The agency also described more than 180,000 unencrypted Social Security numbers and tens of thousands of partial payment-card numbers and expiration dates. Those figures refer to the FTC’s allegations about that case, not a typical retail breach. Read the FTC’s CafePress announcement.

TJX: payment cards and merchandise-return records
The FTC’s 2008 release about TJX said an intruder obtained tens of millions of credit and debit payment cards. It also said personal information belonging to approximately 455,000 consumers who had returned merchandise was involved. The case illustrates that records linked to returns, as well as payment transactions, can be in scope. Read the FTC’s TJX release.
Marriott/Starwood: a hospitality example
Although Marriott and Starwood are hospitality businesses rather than conventional retailers, the FTC’s consumer alert illustrates the breadth of customer and loyalty records that can be exposed. The alert lists names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, passport numbers, dates of birth, gender, loyalty-account details, and reservation information. For some people, payment-card numbers and expiration dates were also accessed. The notice says that some payment-card and passport numbers were protected but not encrypted. - SECURE YOUR WALLET FROM e-PICKPOCKETING: Prevent potential identity and financial theft through your contactless cards. This is the simplest and most effective prevention solution! Block RFID and NFC signals, protect your personal information, and enjoy peace of mind wherever your travels or business take you.
- JAMMING CHIP: An antenna and jamming chip makes up the main components of the card. The antenna will sense incoming radio waves and draw power for the chip to create a jamming signal. Lifetime usage as the card does not require battery.

- ULTRA-THIN & COMPACT: At the size of a standard credit card and at only 0.03” thick, the card will fit into any wallet, purse or card case. Keep your wallet compact with no added bulk from this card. Best for travel, business, and everyday use.
- TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.
How payment information can be exposed
Card data is not held only in a store’s checkout terminal. PCI Security Standards Council guidance identifies potential exposure points including compromised card readers, point-of-sale systems, store networks and wireless routers, payment-system databases, online payment applications and shopping carts, paper records, and hidden cameras recording authentication data. Which of these matters in a particular incident depends on the systems involved.

What to do if a retailer says your data was exposed
- Read the breach notice for your specific information. Check which data types, customers, and transactions are in scope, whether the notice says the information was encrypted or otherwise protected, and what steps the retailer recommends. Different customers may have different records exposed. The FTC’s alerts about Lord & Taylor and Saks advise affected customers to check the companies’ details about what was involved.
- Contact your bank or card issuer if payment data was involved. Ask whether the card should be replaced and how to monitor for suspicious activity. Follow the issuer’s instructions for reporting unauthorized charges.
- Change an exposed password, including anywhere it was reused. Update the password on the affected service and any other account that used the same one. If security-question answers were exposed, review accounts that rely on those answers and change them where possible.
- Consider identity-protection steps if sensitive identifiers were exposed. The FTC explains that fraud alerts and credit freezes can help in relevant circumstances. A freeze makes it harder for someone to open new credit accounts in your name, but it does not stop charges to existing accounts. See the FTC’s guidance on credit freezes and fraud alerts and identity theft.
- Watch for follow-up scams. A message referring to the breach may be a phishing attempt. Do not provide personal information in response to an unexpected email, text, or call; use contact details from the retailer’s official site or your account records instead. The FTC warns consumers about scams after breaches in its Lord & Taylor and Saks alert.
