If enemies are near your squad’s exit, prioritize getting out over winning one more fight. Choose an extraction path, approach with cover, coordinate who watches and who boards, and leave as soon as the route is viable. The details below apply to the original Warzone 2.0 / Modern Warfare II DMZ; the newly announced Modern Warfare 4 DMZ has not yet published a tactical exfil procedure.
First, check which DMZ you are playing
DMZ mechanics vary by game. Call of Duty described the original mode as an extraction-focused experience in which squads complete missions and search for valuable items while trying to survive toward exfiltration (Call of Duty’s 2022 overview).
As of October 7, 2026, Call of Duty’s Modern Warfare 4 DMZ deep dive describes a new persistent extraction experience set in the Hajin Exclusion Zone and lists an October 23, 2026 launch date. It discusses environments, threats, the HUD and Tac-Map, vehicles, and other features, but does not provide a safe-exfil procedure. Do not assume that the original DMZ’s exfil sites, radiation, smoke use, or hostage helicopter work the same way in MW4.
Choose an exit before committing to another fight
In the original DMZ, a standard exfil is a sequence: reach a marked site, call the helicopter, wait for it, board, and escape. Each stage can expose the squad to other operators or AI. A Rescue Hostage contract offers another extraction route, but it requires completing the objective and extracting with the hostage; it may not be available or easy to complete (Digital Trends’ legacy DMZ guide; Rescue Hostage mission listing).

Neither route is always safer. The better choice depends on what is available, where enemies are, how much time remains, and whether your squad can handle the extra objective. Legacy DMZ guides also warn that expanding radiation can close exits, so waiting for a perfect opportunity may cost you the chance to leave.
Make the stay-or-go call
Ask whether another objective is worth the added exposure. If the squad is low on health or supplies, or carrying loot you do not want to lose, weigh that secured value against the uncertain reward of staying. This is a practical risk decision, not a game rule: extract when the likely cost of delay outweighs what you could still gain.

Approach a threatened exfil together
Do not sprint blindly across an exposed landing zone. Move from available cover, and use smoke to obscure a crossing when it makes sense. A legacy guide suggests smoke as an aid, but it is not a guarantee: it cannot establish that the area is clear or make a contested exit safe.
- Keep teammates close enough to support one another without bunching everyone into the same exposed spot.
- Assign simple responsibilities: watch likely approach lanes, keep track of the squad, and call whether to board or disengage.
- If another team is already holding the site, agree on a fallback rather than turning arrival into an extended fight.
There is no universally safest formation or route established by the available guidance. Adapt to the map and enemy positions, and avoid prolonging a fight merely because you have reached the extraction point.

Use the extraction window to scan, then board
At a standard legacy exfil, call the helicopter and use its arrival interval to scan for threats and position the squad. Keep communication clear: call out danger, confirm who is moving, and board promptly when the route is safe enough. Lingering gives opponents more time to respond, while boarding without checking can expose the squad to an ambush.
For a Rescue Hostage contract, follow that objective’s separate requirements and extract with the hostage on its helicopter. Do not treat the contract as an instant escape or assume it will be available whenever a standard site is threatened.

What is not established for Modern Warfare 4 DMZ
The official MW4 announcement establishes the mode’s setting, persistent-extraction framing, and planned launch date, but not the precise steps or tactics for a safe extraction. The original DMZ advice here is useful only as historical guidance; confirm mechanics in the current game’s official instructions once they are available. Call of Duty also said in July 2025 that the original DMZ Beta remained free-to-play within the Modern Warfare II install, but that statement does not establish MW4 DMZ access terms (Call of Duty’s July 2025 update).
