Before you turn on your IdeaPad
Unpack the laptop and supplied power adapter, check for visible shipping damage, and connect the adapter for initial setup. Charger wattage and USB-C charging support are not universal across IdeaPad models; use the adapter supplied with your laptop and check its model-specific documentation for compatibility details.
Turn on the laptop and follow the Windows setup screens. Choose your language or region and keyboard preferences, then connect to a trusted Wi-Fi network when prompted.
Complete Windows first-run setup
Windows will guide you through account and device setup. Lenovo’s general Windows setup guidance describes signing in with an existing Microsoft account or creating one. Lenovo also says you can switch to a local account after initial setup. For the model-specific instructions, search Lenovo Support by your IdeaPad model name or machine type: Lenovo Support.

Choose privacy settings and sign-in options based on your needs. Windows Hello options depend on the laptop’s hardware: for example, face sign-in requires a compatible infrared camera, which is not present on every IdeaPad. Complete security prompts only for features your device supports and you want to use.
Install Windows and Lenovo updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install the updates offered. Restart if Windows requests it, then check again.
- Check Lenovo updates using Lenovo Vantage’s System Update, Lenovo System Update, or the driver scan on the support page for your exact model. Lenovo recommends installing critical and recommended updates. Vantage’s available features and layout can differ by computer.
- Follow any update prompts and repeat the Lenovo update check until it reports no remaining updates.
Lenovo’s Vantage guidance is model-dependent; use the matching support page if an update tool or setting described elsewhere does not appear on your IdeaPad.

Secure and personalize the laptop
- Choose a sign-in method you can use reliably, and make sure you know the recovery method for the Microsoft account associated with Windows.
- Review Windows security and privacy choices made during setup and adjust them to your preferences.
- Install needed apps from trusted sources and update Microsoft Store apps as appropriate.
Back up files and move data from your old PC
Before you wipe, reset, or reinstall Windows on an old computer, make sure important files have a separate backup. Microsoft’s installation guidance recommends backing up files first and identifies an external backup device as one option: Reinstall Windows with the installation media. An external SSD for backup can provide a separate copy, but you do not need to buy one just to complete new-laptop setup.
Do not rely on Microsoft’s former PC-to-PC transfer experience: Microsoft says it is no longer available and directs users to Windows Backup and Restore. Its page about the older transfer process notes that it did not transfer installed apps, saved passwords or credentials, OneDrive files, or files on BitLocker-encrypted drives. Check Microsoft’s current instructions before choosing a migration method, and verify that important files arrived on the IdeaPad: Back up and restore with Windows Backup.

Connect a mouse, headphones, or other accessories
Microsoft says Windows usually detects and installs new hardware automatically when you connect it. If a Bluetooth device does not pair on its own, power it on and put it in pairing mode, then open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Add device and follow the prompts. For wired accessories, confirm that the connector is compatible with your IdeaPad’s actual ports.
Prepare recovery options
After initial setup, consider creating a Windows recovery drive. Lenovo recommends this as part of preparing a new system; Windows recovery options also include Reset this PC and Startup Repair. The available recovery path and any Novo-button procedure vary by IdeaPad model, so consult its documentation before using a model-specific recovery control: Lenovo Support.

A clean Windows installation is not a routine setup step. Microsoft classifies it as an advanced option and warns that it removes personal files, installed apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings. Back up first and use the relevant recovery or installation instructions only when you have a specific reason to reinstall: Microsoft’s Windows installation guidance.

Do not assume every IdeaPad, particularly an older or clearance model, ships with the same Windows version. Microsoft ended free Windows 10 updates, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025. If your laptop runs Windows 10, check Microsoft’s current support options and confirm what applies to your device: Windows 10 support has ended.
