You can create writing, illustrations, and designs without generative AI by doing the work yourself, using conventional creative software, working with physical materials, or hiring a human creative professional. The right alternative depends on the task: writing, digital painting, vector artwork, and page layout call for different workflows.

Write, revise, and fact-check the work yourself
A human-led writing process keeps the ideas, wording, and decisions with the author: develop the subject, draft the text, revise it, and check factual claims. A human editor or proofreader can help with structure, clarity, or errors without generating the prose for you. This is a practical workflow, not a guarantee that human-written work will be accurate; claims still need checking.
For children’s books, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) says it opposes text-prompted generative AI in writing, illustration, translation, and other aspects of creation. It also says traditional publishing standards do not encourage or include GenAI-created text, translations, or illustrations in books. That is SCBWI’s stated position, not a universal rule for every publisher or market. Read SCBWI’s position on AI.
Alternatives to generative AI for illustration
Draw or paint by hand
Paper, pencils, pens, and paints let you create images directly without a digital generation system. Hand drawing can also be a useful starting point when you want to develop a subject or visual treatment before moving to digital tools.

Paint digitally with Krita
Krita is free, open-source painting software. The Krita project describes it as a “professional FREE and open source painting program.” Its features include brush types, layers, drawing assistants, stabilizers, and animation tools, making it an option for digital painting and illustration rather than a complete graphic-design suite. Commission a human illustrator
A commission can be a good fit when a project needs a particular interpretation, subject, or visual style and you do not want to make the image yourself. Before work begins, agree with the illustrator on the scope, schedule, budget, usage rights, and final deliverables. Costs and outcomes vary; there is no established standard price or guaranteed result.

Alternatives to generative AI for graphic design
Sketch concepts before making final artwork
Quick hand sketches can help explore possible layouts and visual ideas before you commit to polished artwork. A pencil and paper are an optional, low-complexity starting point; a sketch can also serve as a brief for later digital work or a designer.
Create vector graphics with Inkscape
Inkscape is a free, open-source vector editor for artistic and technical illustrations, logos, typography, diagrams, and related graphics. Its main format is SVG. The project lists import and export support for formats that include AI, EPS, PDF, PS, and PNG. Choose software by the kind of artwork
Krita and Inkscape address different needs: Krita is oriented toward raster painting, while Inkscape is a vector editor. Neither is established as the better choice overall. Select based on the work you need to make and how it will be delivered.
How to choose a non-generative creative workflow
- Match the tool to the task: writing, raster painting, vector graphics, and page layout are distinct jobs; a tool suited to one may not cover another.
- Choose physical or digital work: drawing by hand can be enough for some projects, while digital work may be easier to revise or share.
- Check file formats and handoff needs: confirm that your collaborators can open and use the formats you plan to deliver.
- Consider budget and learning curve: Krita and Inkscape are free, open-source options, but time to learn and project requirements still matter.
- Decide who will make the work: create it yourself, collaborate with an editor or designer, or commission a specialist when the project calls for custom work.
Copyright and ethical considerations
Copyright rules vary by jurisdiction. In its U.S.-specific analysis, the U.S. Copyright Office’s Part 2 report, published January 29, 2025, says generative AI output can qualify for copyright protection when a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements. Merely providing prompts is not enough under that analysis. Human-authored material, creative arrangement, or modifications can matter. The Office’s report index lists Part 1, published July 31, 2024, as addressing digital replicas; Part 2, published January 29, 2025, as addressing copyrightability of generative AI outputs; and a pre-publication version of Part 3 on generative AI training, released May 9, 2025. The index says a final Part 3 will be published in the future, so its status may change. Check the report index for updates.
Legal questions are not the only consideration. Creative Commons notes that licensing tools may address some legal uncertainty but do not resolve wider concerns such as privacy, consent, bias, economic impacts, access, and control. WIPO’s 2024 publication offers organizations principles and a checklist for considering intellectual-property risks and safeguards when adopting generative AI.
