Choose Perfect Dark if you want a first-person shooter built around secret-agent Joanna Dark and multiplayer options. Choose Deus Ex if you want role-playing progression and the freedom to tackle obstacles by talking, fighting, or using skills. The official descriptions support that difference, but they do not establish that the games share the same genre boundaries.
How do the games differ?
| Game | Best fit | What its official listing emphasizes |
|---|---|---|
| Perfect Dark (Nintendo 64) | Players looking for shooter action, Joanna Dark’s secret-agent story, and multiplayer options. | Nintendo describes it as a first-person shooter in which players control special operative Joanna Dark. Nintendo lists its release date as 19 May 2000. Nintendo’s official game page. |
| Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition | Players drawn to role-playing progression and choosing different approaches to obstacles. | Steam describes first-person role-playing, character development, interaction, problem-solving, and multiple solutions. Its listing gives a release date of 22 June 2000 and names Ion Storm as developer and Eidos Interactive Corp. as publisher. Steam’s game listing. |
Which one should you choose?
Choose Perfect Dark for shooter action and multiplayer
The original Nintendo 64 game centers on playing as Joanna Dark, a special operative. Nintendo’s description and the game’s multiplayer options make it the clearer choice if you mainly want a shooter or want multiplayer modes. The original N64 release has a specific hardware caveat: Nintendo says the Expansion Pak is required for solo missions and three-to-four-player multiplayer modes. That requirement applies to the original N64 version; it should not be assumed to apply to later releases.

Choose Deus Ex for role-playing and alternate approaches
Deus Ex is the stronger fit if you want character development and options for dealing with obstacles instead of approaching every situation as a straightforward shooting challenge. Steam’s publisher-provided listing says players can “Talk, fight or use skills to get past obstacles as the game adapts itself to your style of play.” That describes the advertised play style, rather than an independent assessment of how well every approach works.
Where can you play them?

What the official descriptions cannot settle
The available official descriptions do not establish which game is easier to pick up today, or how their controls, pacing, or accessibility compare. They also do not establish multiplayer parity across different versions of Perfect Dark. The choice here is therefore about the play styles the listings describe, not a claim that one game feels better or is more approachable in practice.
Microsoft’s discussion of the Perfect Dark reboot describes that newer game as drawing on first-person shooters, immersive sims, and stealth-action. That is about the reboot, not the 2000 Nintendo 64 original, so it should not be used to define the original game’s genre. Xbox Wire’s 2024 reboot interview.
