Nintendo Switch 2 can automatically download updates for installed games when it is online and Software Auto-Updates is enabled. You can also check for an update yourself from a game’s HOME Menu options. What an update changes—and whether you need it for a particular feature or to play online—depends on that game; check the publisher’s notes rather than assuming every update is mandatory.
What a Nintendo Switch 2 game update changes
A game update applies to a particular game. Depending on the title, its notes may describe bug fixes, balance changes, added content, or compatibility changes. Nintendo’s general update instructions explain how to download updates, but they do not provide a complete catalogue of patch notes for every game. For a specific title, consult its official update notes or publisher.
Do you need to download a game update?
Nintendo says that when an update is available and the console is online, the system may prompt you to download it when you start the game or application. That prompt does not mean every update is mandatory in every situation. Whether a particular update is required for a game, feature, or online play is title-specific; check the publisher’s guidance if you need to know before updating.
How to update a game on Switch 2
Turn on automatic updates
- Connect the console to the internet.
- From HOME, open System Settings > System > Software Auto-Updates and enable the setting.
Nintendo says installed software updates download automatically while Switch 2 is connected to the internet when this setting is enabled. Nintendo Support’s software update instructions provide the setting and manual-check steps.

Check one game manually
- Connect Switch 2 to the internet.
- On HOME, highlight the game without starting it.
- Press + or −, then choose Software Update > Over the Internet.
Game updates, system updates, and Switch 2 upgrades are different

Nintendo’s system update history lists version 23.0.0, released September 9, 2026. Its notes include changes to GameChat and virtual game card settings, VRR support in TV mode when supported by the software and television, and general stability improvements. These are console-level release notes, not evidence that any particular game received an update.
Do you need a microSD Express card to download updates?
No. A storage card is optional for updates. Nintendo says Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards, and system version 20.1.0 is required to use one. A compatible card is an option for storage expansion, not a requirement for downloading a game update. See Nintendo’s microSD Express information for details.
