Look first for public, authorized sources, then trace a clip’s provenance and corroboration before treating it as evidence. A video recording is not the same thing as a playable build, and neither its existence nor its apparent authenticity establishes permission to download, run, or redistribute it. Do not install an unknown prototype to find out whether a clip is real.
Where to look for cancelled-game footage
Start with developer and publisher announcements, public interviews, contemporaneous press coverage, and established game-history research. Games That Weren’t is a specialist resource for cancelled and unreleased game history. Its coverage is useful context, not proof that every item discussed was officially released or is authorized for redistribution.
Prefer a source that gives the clip’s original context over a repost or compilation. Reuploads can remove the uploader’s attribution, date, description, and explanation of what project or development period the footage is supposed to represent.

How to assess whether a clip is genuine
There is no universal authenticity test established by the sources cited here. A clip’s existence alone does not establish who recorded it, when it was recorded, which project it depicts, or which build it shows. Keep the claim proportional to the evidence: use wording such as “attributed to,” “reported as,” or “not independently verified” when appropriate.
#1 Best Overall
- Trace the earliest findable publication. Record the uploader or publisher, publication date, description, named source, and any original context. Distinguish the earliest traceable post you found from the date the footage was actually captured.
- Check the project and development context. Look for a specific game, platform, development period, and build attribution. A recording could show an early prototype rather than the form the cancelled project was intended to take.
- Seek independent corroboration. Look for a named developer or publisher statement, a reliable contemporary record, or sources that confirm the claim independently. Multiple reposts of the same rumor are not separate confirmation.
- Label what remains unknown. Keep attribution, capture date, and build identity as separate claims; evidence for one does not automatically establish the others.
Footage, playable builds, and preserved artifacts are different
A recording lets someone view software in use; a playable build is software that can be run; a preserved artifact is material maintained with provenance and context. These are not interchangeable forms of evidence. The Library of Congress Recommended Formats Statement for Software and Video Games distinguishes source code, gold master builds, distribution files, and video recordings. It says a video of software in use can substitute when a preservation copy is absent or significant online dependencies cannot be recreated. That is preservation guidance, not consumer permission to download a leak.
Historical collecting can preserve traces that might otherwise disappear, while leaving authorization and provenance questions unresolved. James Hodges’s 2015–2016 Electronic Media Review case study, “Unauthorized Archives and Unreleased Software: Preserving a Cancelled Project,” examines Sonic X-Treme, which was in development from 1994 to 1997. Its abstract describes a grey-market, peer-to-peer preservation effort involving former lead designer Christian Senn, collaborators, collectors, and bootleggers. The example illustrates why an artifact’s history and context matter; it is not an endorsement of downloading or distributing unauthorized software.
How to view material without taking unnecessary risks
Use normal video playback on a maintained device. Avoid links from unknown hosts that offer an executable, ROM, playable build, password-protected archive, or “verification tool.” A scan may reduce risk, but cannot prove a file is benign; running an unknown build is not a sound way to authenticate a video.

- Do not disable security protections or provide payment or personal information to obtain a purported prototype. Nintendo warns that suspicious offers can be scams seeking funds or personal information; its piracy guidance concerns illegal game products and does not mean every video or historical discussion is piracy.
- Back up your own notes and lawfully held files to an external drive or vetted cloud service. CISA advises disconnecting an external backup drive when it is not actively being used. A backup protects your data; it does not legitimize a leak.
Rights and publisher policies depend on the source and jurisdiction
Rights-holder policies vary. Rockstar says it will take down leaked pre-release footage regardless of how it was obtained. Bethesda says it may request removal of leaked content and footage from illegally obtained versions, as well as beta material that violates an NDA. These are policies of those publishers, not universal industry rules; check the relevant rights holder’s current terms before sharing or publishing a clip. See Rockstar Games Customer Support and Bethesda Support.
In the United States, the Copyright Office’s Section 1201 overview explains that the DMCA prohibits circumvention of technological measures controlling access to copyrighted works, including games, subject to specific exemptions. The current regulation, 37 CFR 201.40, sets limited, carefully conditioned preservation cases for eligible libraries, archives, or museums, plus certain cases involving local gameplay of qualifying lawfully acquired complete games after an external server stops providing access. These provisions do not create a general personal license to acquire leaked software, circumvent access controls, or repost footage. Rules differ by jurisdiction; get advice from a qualified lawyer for a case-specific legal question.
