Check the Windows edition and the exact activation error first. Then run the Windows Activation troubleshooter and follow Microsoft’s instructions for the code currently shown. A Windows 11 Pro key must match the edition installed, and the license must permit activation on that device.
Start with the installed edition and current error
- Confirm Windows and its version: Press Windows+R, type
winver, and press Enter. Confirm the device is running Windows 11. - Check activation status and edition: Open Settings > System > Activation. Note whether the installed edition is Home, Pro, or another edition, and copy the complete error code and message.
- Enter a key only if it matches: If needed, select Change product key and enter the 25-character key. A Pro key does not license Home or Enterprise; a digital license may also be tied to a different edition than the one installed.
Record the code again after each attempt: Microsoft notes that the error can change. Use the current code, not an earlier one, when consulting Microsoft’s Windows activation error guide.
Run the Activation troubleshooter
In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot. This option is available when Windows is not activated, and you need to be signed in as an administrator. Microsoft may direct users into a current Get Help flow. The troubleshooter can diagnose common activation problems and may recognize a digital license associated with another edition.
If you have a Pro digital license but installed Home, the troubleshooter may offer an upgrade to Pro. If your license is for Home and Pro is installed, that Home license cannot activate Pro; install the edition covered by the license. Use the error code to choose the right fix
These codes are examples, not a complete list. Check Microsoft’s current error guide because codes and recommended steps can vary.

For an unlisted code, use Microsoft’s error guide or contact Microsoft support rather than applying a fix intended for a different error.

If activation failed after a hardware change
A digital license is associated with a device. Replacing a motherboard or making another significant hardware change can prevent Windows from finding the license. When possible, associate your Microsoft account with the digital license before changing hardware. Afterward, open Settings > System > Activation, run the troubleshooter, and choose the hardware-change reactivation option if offered. Follow Microsoft’s hardware-change reactivation instructions.

A product key is a 25-character code. Windows can also activate with a digital license, which may not appear as a key you can view or enter. An upgrade to Windows 10 or Windows 11 Pro purchased in the Microsoft Store app may provide a digital license instead of a product key. Where a key is located depends on how Windows was acquired; see Microsoft’s product-key guidance or ask the device manufacturer.

- Key bought from a reseller: Contact the seller if Microsoft rejects it.
- Windows included with a new PC: Contact the device manufacturer if it fails activation on first use.
