Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are tiny fluorescent carbon-based particles. They emit light when excited electrons relax to lower-energy states, and the emitted color depends on the energy difference between those states. Particle size can influence that energy, but surface chemistry, defects, synthesis, and measurement conditions also matter—so there is no universal rule that size alone determines a CQD’s color.
What are carbon quantum dots?
Carbon quantum dots are a family of fluorescent carbon nanoparticles commonly described as less than 10 nanometers across. A typical description includes a carbon-rich core, which may have graphitic or mixed sp²/sp³ character, surrounded by a chemically functionalized surface. The precise structure varies with the starting materials, synthesis route, and later treatment; the name does not guarantee one identical structure or one mechanism of light emission. You et al.’s 2024 review describes their size and variable physicochemical properties in its review of fluorescent carbon quantum dots.
Researchers make CQDs through both top-down and bottom-up approaches. Top-down methods break larger carbonaceous materials into smaller particles, while bottom-up methods carbonize or polymerize smaller molecular precursors. Processing affects the particle core and its surface, which can change optical behavior.
How do carbon quantum dots emit light?
A CQD absorbs light and enters an excited electronic state. As the excited system relaxes, it can release energy as a photon. The photon’s wavelength—and therefore its perceived color—reflects the energy difference between the states involved: a larger energy difference corresponds to shorter-wavelength light, while a smaller difference corresponds to longer-wavelength light.

That transition may involve the carbon core or conjugated regions, surface states, or molecular-like states associated with the particle. More than one pathway can contribute, and which one dominates can differ between samples. Reviews of CQD photoluminescence describe this variety of possible mechanisms rather than a single explanation that applies to every formulation (You et al., 2024; Carbon Research, 2023; 2022 review indexed by PubMed).
What changes a CQD’s emission color?
Core and conjugated-domain size
In some CQD systems, the size of the light-emitting conjugated domain affects its energy gap. Smaller domains may have wider gaps and emit at shorter wavelengths; larger domains may have narrower gaps and shift emission toward longer wavelengths. Reviews report such blue-to-red shifts in particular studies, but the trend is not a dependable size-only formula for all carbon dots.

Surface chemistry, oxidation, and defects
Functional groups and defects at a dot’s surface can create electronic states that capture excited charges and contribute to emission. Oxidation changes the abundance and types of oxygen-containing surface groups, so changes in surface chemistry can alter both emission wavelength and brightness.
Passivation
Passivating a surface changes its electronic environment and can reduce nonradiative routes by which excited energy is lost without producing light. This often improves photoluminescence intensity, but the resulting color shift, if any, depends on the material and treatment; passivation does not prescribe one fixed color.

Heteroatom doping
Adding atoms such as nitrogen can alter energy levels or introduce and modify emissive states. The outcome depends on the dopant, how it bonds within the material, and the synthesis conditions. Even the 2024 review notes that some details of nitrogen-doping effects remain unclear.
Excitation wavelength and environment
Some CQDs show excitation-dependent emission: changing the wavelength used to excite them changes the observed emission. Others emit independently of excitation wavelength over the range measured. Solvent, pH, surface groups, and other measurement conditions can also affect optical behavior, so a reported color is most useful when accompanied by its excitation wavelength and measurement environment.

How to compare reports or samples
Two samples both called carbon quantum dots may differ enough to emit different colors or brightness. When comparing results, look for these details rather than relying on the label alone:
- Particle size and, where reported, the size of conjugated domains.
- Core structure and degree of graphitization.
- Surface functional groups, oxidation, and passivation.
- Heteroatom identity and bonding state.
- Starting materials, synthesis route, and post-treatment.
- Excitation wavelength, emission peak, and measurement environment.
These factors help explain why two CQD reports may not be directly comparable, even if both describe fluorescent carbon nanoparticles.

Where are carbon quantum dots being studied?
Reviews describe CQDs as candidates or active research materials for fluorescent sensing, biomedical imaging, lighting and displays, and photocatalysis (You et al., 2024; Materials Today Advances, 2023). These are research and developing application areas, not evidence that every CQD formulation is safe, clinically approved, or commercially mature.
