Airtime fairness manages how Wi-Fi transmission time is shared among connected devices; band steering encourages a device to use a more suitable available Wi-Fi band. They address different decisions, are not substitutes for one another, and can behave differently across router models and firmware.

How the settings differ

Setting What it controls Question it addresses
Airtime fairness How the access point allocates shared wireless transmission time among clients How should airtime be divided when devices connect at different rates?
Band steering Which available band or network a client is encouraged to use Should this device use one available Wi-Fi band rather than another?

Wi-Fi devices share a wireless medium. Airtime fairness concerns how long clients occupy that medium; band steering concerns a client’s band or network selection. A router’s setting name alone does not tell you its exact algorithm.

What airtime fairness does

Airtime fairness is intended to manage the time clients use the wireless medium, particularly when devices connect at different physical rates. A slower transmission can occupy the channel longer, so an access point may use an airtime policy to limit how much that affects other clients. The goal is airtime efficiency, not a guaranteed speed increase for every device.

There is no single implementation implied by the label. TP-Link documents products that give stations equal transmission time regardless of physical rate, as well as products that allocate transmission time according to physical rates. Those are different policies, and a description of one product family should not be treated as a universal definition.

TP-Link’s July 23, 2024 support article includes an illustrative product-specific comparison. With airtime fairness disabled, it reports download speeds of 28.075 Mbps for 802.11g and 18.521 Mbps for 802.11n; with the feature enabled, it reports 12.214 Mbps and 116.538 Mbps, respectively. TP-Link says overall throughput in that example changed from 46 Mbps to 128 Mbps. These are the vendor’s figures for its example, not independent measurements or a prediction of what another router or household will achieve. See TP-Link Omada’s airtime fairness explanation.

What band steering does

Band steering encourages a compatible client to use a more suitable available band or network. On a router offering both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, for example, it may influence which band a device uses. It does not decide how much airtime that device receives after it connects.

Steering is not a guarantee that a router can force a client onto a particular band. The client’s capabilities and choices, signal conditions, and the router’s method all matter. Apple’s general router guidance recommends enabling all bands supported by the router; that is broad configuration guidance, not an endorsement of every manufacturer’s steering algorithm. See Apple’s recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points.

Why steering methods vary

FRITZ! describes steering between available Wi-Fi bands, including 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, on its routers and repeaters. Its documented behavior can depend on whether a client supports 802.11k/v. For some older devices, FRITZ! describes briefly clearing a connection to steer the client. That is a FRITZ!-specific implementation, not a general procedure for other routers. See FRITZ!’s band steering explanation.

ARRIS describes its mAX implementation as monitoring client performance and steering a device to another band if its performance falls below a threshold. This is another example of a vendor-specific method, not a rule that applies to all routers. See ARRIS’s mAX band steering setup article.

Should you enable one or both?

Use the router manufacturer’s recommended default as your starting point. Consider changing a setting when you have a specific connectivity or performance problem to investigate—not because the feature name promises a universal improvement. Neither setting guarantees better individual speed, range, or reliability; results depend on the router model and firmware, client devices, signal, and network traffic.

If your router offers both settings, they can address different aspects of the same network: band steering influences where a compatible client connects, while airtime fairness influences shared transmission-time allocation. Enabling one does not make the other redundant.

How to test a setting safely

  1. Check the exact router documentation. Look up the model and hardware revision, since a setting may be absent or work differently across products.
  2. Record the current setting. Note its state so you can restore it if the affected device performs worse.
  3. Change only one setting at a time. Otherwise, you will not know which change affected the result.
  4. Compare consistently. Test the same client in the same location under similar conditions, and check the task that originally caused concern.
  5. Restore the previous state if needed. If the client connects poorly after the change, return to the recorded setting and consult the router maker’s model-specific guidance.

For a device that behaves differently from others, check its band capabilities and support for relevant roaming standards as well as the router setting. Client and access point behavior both affect connection selection; there is no single toggle sequence established for every router.

Do you need a new router?

No. A dual-band Wi-Fi router is the relevant product category for a network that makes multiple bands available, but owning a compatible router does not mean you need to replace it to use these settings. Check your current model’s documentation first; the features may already be available, and their names and behavior vary by product.
