Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and semiconductor quantum dots (SQDs) are different material families, not interchangeable names for one substance. Both can fluoresce and are studied for imaging and sensing, but their composition, optical behavior, applications, and safety considerations differ. CQDs are carbon-based particles whose properties vary with synthesis and surface chemistry; SQDs are semiconductor nanocrystals whose size and composition help determine their behavior. Neither family can be declared safe or hazardous as a whole without considering the specific formulation and exposure.
What is the difference between carbon and semiconductor quantum dots?
“Quantum dot” describes a nanoscale material category, not a single chemical recipe. Carbon quantum dots are a varied family of carbon-based particles. Semiconductor quantum dots are nanocrystals made from semiconductor materials. Both may be engineered to emit light, but a shared fluorescent effect does not mean they have the same structure, performance, or risk profile.
| Comparison | Carbon quantum dots | Semiconductor quantum dots |
|---|---|---|
| Basic material | Carbon-based particles; composition, doping, and surface groups vary by preparation. The 2024 review “Carbon Quantum Dots: Properties, Preparation, and Applications” describes multiple CQD types and synthesis routes. | Nanocrystalline semiconductors. Materials include different semiconductor systems; the U.S. EPA’s examples include CdSe, ZnS-AgInS2, and PbS quantum dots. |
| What influences optical behavior | Fluorescence can involve carbon-domain electronic states and surface or defect states. Excitation and emission behavior vary with preparation and surface chemistry, as discussed in the 2024 CQD review. | Quantum confinement makes bandgap and fluorescence size-dependent, while composition also matters. The U.S. EPA describes changing particle size as a way to change fluorescence color; Chahal et al. discuss the size-dependent bandgap of semiconductor dots in their 2024 comparison. |
| Uses described in the cited sources | Studied for bioimaging, sensing, optoelectronics, drug delivery, cancer-therapy research, and environmental remediation (2024 CQD review). | Examples include CdSe QDs in LED lights, ZnS-AgInS2 QDs for imaging cells and molecules, and PbS QDs in solar cells (U.S. EPA). Epitaxial QDs are also studied for quantum photonics (NIST-hosted 2019 review). |
| Safety considerations | Carbon composition does not by itself establish safety. Formulation, impurities, exposure route, dose, and intended use matter; evidence from particular CQDs cannot establish the safety of every preparation. | Some formulations contain elements of concern, including cadmium or lead, but not all semiconductor QDs contain cadmium. Composition, coating, potential release, exposure, and use must be assessed. |
How do their properties and fluorescence differ?
Carbon dots vary with how they are made
CQDs are not one chemically uniform substance. The 2024 review describes top-down preparation methods such as arc discharge, laser ablation, electrochemical methods, and oxidation, as well as bottom-up approaches including templates, microwave methods, and hydrothermal synthesis. These different routes can produce particles with different sizes, surface groups, and optical behavior.
Studied CQDs are often described as small, fluorescent, water-soluble, and amenable to functionalization. These are reported tendencies, not guarantees for every carbon-dot formulation. Surface chemistry and preparation affect the properties researchers observe and may tailor a dot for a particular investigation.

Semiconductor dots use size as an optical design variable
In semiconductor QDs, quantum confinement links particle size to the energy gap and therefore to optical behavior. Changing size can shift fluorescence color, but size is not the only determinant: the semiconductor composition and other material characteristics matter too. The EPA gives examples spanning CdSe, ZnS-AgInS2, and PbS, illustrating why “semiconductor quantum dot” should not be treated as a synonym for “cadmium dot.”
Fluorescence is a property both families can share, not proof that their emission mechanisms or performance are identical. The appropriate comparison depends on the particular materials and the purpose for which they are being evaluated.

What are carbon and semiconductor quantum dots used for?
Carbon-dot applications are broad research directions
The 2024 CQD review surveys research into bioimaging, sensors, optoelectronics, environmental remediation, drug delivery, and cancer-therapy applications. These examples indicate areas being investigated; they do not establish that a CQD product is an approved clinical treatment or that every proposed use has reached practical deployment.
Semiconductor dots span devices, imaging, and photonics
The EPA lists CdSe QDs in LED lights, ZnS-AgInS2 QDs for imaging cells and molecules, and PbS QDs in solar cells. Those examples show the range of compositions and application areas; they should not be read as a claim that every formulation is used in every setting.

A separate, specialized area is quantum photonics. A NIST-hosted 2019 review describes epitaxial semiconductor QDs as artificial atoms with discrete energy levels and discusses on-demand single-photon and entangled-photon-pair generation for quantum communications, computing, and sensing research. These photonic devices are distinct from ordinary LED applications.
Are carbon quantum dots safer than semiconductor quantum dots?
There is no evidence-based, universal safety ranking of the two families. Some semiconductor QDs contain elements such as cadmium or lead, which makes composition and potential release important considerations. But a carbon-based label is not proof of harmlessness, and results for one formulation cannot automatically be extended to another.

What one fruit-fly comparison found
In a study published May 14, 2024, in Environmental Science: Advances, Chahal et al. compared two carbon-dot preparations—nitrogen-doped and nitrogen/sulfur-co-doped—with CdTe quantum dots in Drosophila melanogaster. In the tested dietary exposure range of 10–100 mg/kg food, the authors observed no impact on larva-to-adult development from the two tested carbon-dot preparations. They reported a CdTe-QD EC50 of 46 mg/kg food for that developmental endpoint, along with concentration-related delays in pupation and emergence.
This result applies to those samples, fruit flies, food doses, and developmental outcomes. It is not a human safety threshold, does not establish the safety of all CQDs, and does not show that all semiconductor QDs have the same toxicity. The study’s findings should not be generalized beyond those conditions.

Assess the formulation and exposure, not just the material label
The EPA’s nanomaterial exposure resource identifies properties and use scenarios that can affect behavior and exposure, including surface chemistry, size, shape, aggregation, impurities, dispersion, solubility, and dissolution. It discusses inhalation, ingestion, and dermal exposure routes, with injection relevant to biomedical applications. A safety assessment therefore needs to match the specific material and how it may be encountered.
A 2019 review of less-toxic quantum dots discusses core-shell structures, ligands, and metal-free or lower-toxicity alternatives as design strategies. Such approaches may address particular concerns, but a coating or alternative composition is not by itself proof of benign behavior or regulatory approval. As the EPA notes, “Many modern nanomaterials and novel applications are still being developed and research into their associated effects, exposure, and risks is ongoing.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you compare them for a particular application?
Start with the task rather than the family name. For a specific research, device, or biomedical use, compare the actual candidate formulations and the conditions under which they will be used.
- Identify the material. Check the composition, particle size, surface chemistry or coating, doping, and relevant impurities. “Carbon dot” or “semiconductor dot” alone is not a complete specification.
- Match optical behavior to the task. Determine the required excitation and emission behavior and whether the relevant data apply to the formulation under consideration. For semiconductor dots, account for both size and composition; for CQDs, account for preparation and surface chemistry.
- Separate demonstrated uses from research prospects. The cited sources describe specific device examples for semiconductor dots and broad areas of CQD investigation, but they do not provide a universal product-readiness ranking across applications.
- Evaluate realistic exposure. Consider the amount used, route of contact, dispersion, aggregation, solubility or dissolution, and whether the material is contained in a device or used in a setting where people could encounter it.
- Use evidence that matches the decision. A study of a particular formulation, organism, dose, or endpoint cannot answer every human-health, workplace, clinical, or regulatory question.
The EPA exposure resource and the cited reviews provide general context, not a substitute for a material-specific safety assessment or jurisdiction-specific regulatory determination.
