If Wi-Fi got slower after you enabled airtime fairness, turn it off temporarily for the affected band or network and repeat the same test from the same spot with the same device. Keep it off only if the improvement is consistent for your normal use. Airtime fairness is intended to manage how wireless transmission time is shared; its effect depends on the access point, connected devices, radio conditions and vendor implementation.
First, identify what “slow” means
Before changing settings, record the router or access-point model, firmware version if available, affected band, client device and test location. Note whether the problem is low download speed, high latency, stuttering or a failed connection; these symptoms can have different causes.
Airtime fairness changes how clients share time on a Wi-Fi radio. Vendors describe it as a way to limit the effect that slower clients can have on other devices. Implementations are not identical: NETGEAR’s RAX5 manual describes its implementation as ensuring that clients receive equal network time, while Cisco’s enterprise documentation describes policy controls that include weights and client-sharing settings. See NETGEAR’s RAX5 manual and Cisco’s Catalyst 9800 IOS XE 26.x guide.
Check whether the slowdown is actually Wi-Fi
If practical, compare wireless performance with a wired connection. TP-Link recommends connecting a computer to the modem by Ethernet and comparing that result with the slow routed connection. If the direct modem test is also slow, the modem or internet service may be responsible rather than airtime fairness or Wi-Fi. Follow your provider’s instructions if your modem setup does not allow a direct test. See TP-Link’s slow-internet troubleshooting guide.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Test airtime fairness with one change at a time
- Find the setting for your exact model. Use the router or access-point manufacturer’s current manual or support page. Menu names and whether the control applies per band or across a network vary by product; do not assume another model’s clicks will match yours.
- Record a baseline. With the current setting enabled, test the affected device from its usual location. Keep the device, band, test method and other conditions as consistent as possible. If the issue is responsiveness under load, assess that too—not just a single peak speed result.
- Disable airtime fairness temporarily. Save or apply the change, then repeat the same test in the same location. Avoid changing channel, channel width or other radio settings at the same time, or you will not know which change affected the result.
- Compare repeat results. A repeatable difference matters more than one speed-test run. Also check how other devices perform when they are active together, so a gain for one client is not mistaken for a benefit to the whole network.
- Keep or restore the setting based on the result. If turning it off repeatedly improves the affected use without an unacceptable effect on other devices, you can leave it off. If performance does not improve, restore the original setting and continue troubleshooting.
Example: NETGEAR RAX5
For the NETGEAR RAX5 specifically, its manual gives the path ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Wireless Settings. Clear Enable AIRTIME FAIRNESS, then select Apply. This is an RAX5-specific path, not a universal NETGEAR menu path. The manual is available from NETGEAR’s RAX5 support page.
Example: listed NETGEAR access points
For the access-point models covered by NETGEAR’s support article, the stated path is Management > Wireless > Advanced. That article was last updated on August 10, 2020, and applies to the models it lists; confirm the instructions for your current model and firmware before making a change. See NETGEAR’s access-point instructions.

- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
If the test does not solve it, check signal and radio conditions
- Test near the access point. Move the client close to the router with as few obstructions as practical. If performance improves, distance, walls or weak signal may be contributing.
- Consider the client. Older Wi-Fi hardware or a device with a weak radio can perform poorly independently of airtime fairness. D-Link lists distance, signal strength and legacy hardware among factors to consider in its CWM manual.
- Check interference and channel configuration. TP-Link recommends examining the wireless environment, channel and channel width when Wi-Fi is slow. Its examples are for TP-Link equipment, not universal settings for every router or regulatory region. Start with your manufacturer’s guidance rather than copying a channel-width recommendation from another product.
- Separate band- or device-specific symptoms. If only one client or band is affected, note that distinction while testing. It can help narrow the issue to that client’s compatibility or the radio conditions on that band.
Use compatibility advice only for the matching setup
Sonos advises disabling airtime fairness on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz for connection problems involving Sonos products and the app during or after setup on Asus RT and AX series routers. This is specific compatibility guidance, not evidence that airtime fairness causes slow Wi-Fi on every Asus router or with other clients. See Sonos’s Asus RT and AX compatibility guidance. For other combinations of router and client, look for matching advice from the relevant manufacturers.

Airtime fairness is not a guaranteed speed boost or a universal cause of slow Wi-Fi. NETGEAR describes its feature as useful when a mix of current and legacy clients, or clients far from the access point, allows slower connections to affect others. TP-Link likewise treats slow wireless performance as a reason to examine the wireless environment and router settings when a wired connection works normally. Enterprise systems may offer more detailed airtime policies than a consumer on/off switch; Cisco’s Catalyst 9800 documentation is an enterprise configuration guide, not a procedure for home routers.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
There is no established general figure here for how often airtime fairness causes slowdown or how much speed users typically gain or lose. Judge the setting on repeat tests of your own devices and the work you need the network to do.
