An older Wi-Fi device can use more shared airtime than newer devices, but its age alone does not show that it is slowing down your network. Compare its speed with another device in the same place, then repeat the test near the router and, if possible, over Ethernet. If only the older device is slow, investigate that device; if several devices are slow, look for a shared Wi-Fi, router, or internet-service problem.

First distinguish a slow device from a slow network

A slow speed test on an older phone or computer means that device has a slow connection under those test conditions. It does not, by itself, mean the device is making other clients slow. Wi-Fi clients share wireless airtime, and a slower client may take longer to send and receive data. TP-Link describes this effect in its Omada access point documentation, but the impact depends on the network and traffic; there is no universal slowdown percentage that can be inferred from a device’s age.

Google’s guidance notes that a device connected to Wi-Fi competes with other devices for bandwidth. That is a reason to check shared load, not proof that one particular old device is responsible. Use comparisons to see whether the problem follows the device or affects the network more broadly.

Run a controlled comparison

  1. Record a baseline. Run a speed test and note the device, its location, whether it is on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and any major household downloads or streams. Test during typical household use. Microsoft recommends checking network speed before making troubleshooting changes. Do not treat a router’s advertised maximum as the expected result: the internet plan and each client’s capabilities also constrain speed.
  2. Compare another device in the same conditions. Put a newer phone or laptop near the older device and run the same test close in time and in the same location. If the newer device is much faster while the older one remains slow, investigate the older device’s Wi-Fi adapter, supported band, driver, and connection. If both are slow, check for shared causes such as weak signal, interference, congestion, router performance, background traffic, or the internet service.
  3. Move the older device near the router or access point. Repeat the comparison. A substantial improvement nearby suggests that distance, walls, or placement may be contributing; it does not establish that the device’s age is the cause. Google identifies distance and physical barriers as factors in Wi-Fi performance.
  4. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if practical. Test a computer connected to the router by Ethernet. If wired performance is substantially better, focus next on the wireless connection. If wired and wireless results are similarly poor, investigate the router’s internet connection, ISP service, or another shared issue. This comparison is a diagnostic clue rather than a guarantee: the Ethernet cable, ports, computer adapter, and test conditions can also limit results.

Use the results to narrow down the cause

What you observe What it suggests What to check next
The older device is slow, but a newer device is fast in the same location. The issue may be specific to the older client; this comparison does not prove it is slowing other devices. Check the older device’s adapter, supported Wi-Fi standards and bands, driver, and connection to the router.
The older device improves substantially near the router. Signal strength, distance, obstructions, or placement may be part of the problem. Check its usual location and the band it uses. Compare again after changing placement or other relevant conditions.
Several devices are slow in the same area. A shared wireless or network condition is more likely than a problem confined to one client. Check signal, channel congestion, active traffic, router performance, and the internet service.
Wi-Fi is slow, but Ethernet is substantially faster. The wireless portion deserves closer examination. Check coverage, band, interference, and client or access-point capabilities.
Both Wi-Fi and Ethernet are slow across devices. The issue may be the internet connection, router, or another shared cause. Compare results with the subscribed service and check for an ISP issue.

Check the client’s Wi-Fi capabilities and band

Find the older device’s Wi-Fi adapter and the standards it supports, such as Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n), Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax). Compare those with the router’s supported modes and bands. A client and router need a compatible standard and band to connect; a newer standard’s highest rates require compatible equipment at both ends. Dell’s guidance recommends considering the router standard, internet plan, and client adapter when investigating slow performance. Apple recommends enabling the router’s available radio modes where possible so each device can use the fastest mode it supports.

If the router shows a connected client’s band or connection rate, note it as a clue, not as a substitute for a speed test. Some routers combine bands under one network name, and devices may select a band automatically. Microsoft describes the general range and speed trade-off: 2.4 GHz typically reaches farther and penetrates obstacles better, while 5 GHz and 6 GHz can offer higher throughput over shorter distances and pass through walls less effectively.

If the client cannot see or join the network, check its wireless driver and the device maker’s compatibility guidance. Legacy compatibility options are model-specific: for example, eero documents a legacy mode for certain older-driver devices on specified eero 6 models and warns that it may reduce speeds. Do not assume the same setting exists on other routers.

Check shared airtime and router options carefully

Clients sharing a Wi-Fi channel also share airtime. A client transmitting at a slower wireless rate can take longer to transfer data, leaving less airtime for others in some conditions. This is a possible mechanism, not a guarantee that an old device will noticeably slow a home network.

Some access points offer an airtime fairness setting to manage how wireless clients receive transmission opportunities. Its availability and behavior vary by product. Consult the manual for the specific router or access point before changing it. If supported, compare performance with the option on and off; do not assume enabling it will improve every network, particularly where older or specialized devices are involved.

Make one relevant change, then retest

Once the comparisons point to a likely cause, change one thing at a time and repeat the same tests. Possible changes include moving the device or access point, using a better-supported band when signal permits, reducing channel congestion, updating the client’s wireless driver, or testing a supported airtime fairness option. If multiple devices remain slow across locations, check the router and internet service rather than attributing the problem to the older client.
