ChatGPT’s new College Student plugin is for studying—not for choosing a college or managing applications. It can turn course notes, readings, slides and other selected materials into tutoring sessions, quizzes, flashcards, study guides, study plans, practice tests and visual explanations. Access is institution-managed through ChatGPT Edu or ChatGPT for Teachers district deployments, so it is not a feature every ChatGPT user can assume is available.
What the College Student plugin does
OpenAI announced the College Student plugin on August 4, 2026, as part of new education plugins for ChatGPT Work and Codex. The plugin is designed to help students work with material they are already studying. Students choose course sources and a learning goal, then use the plugin to create or interact with study aids. OpenAI’s announcement and its College Student plugin guide describe the following uses:
- Guided tutoring and question-and-answer practice
- Practice quizzes and tests
- Flashcards, including Anki-ready CSV output
- Study guides and study plans
- Visual explanations of difficult concepts
“College planning tools” can sound like admissions support, but the documented features concern coursework and exam preparation. The official materials do not describe college selection, financial-aid advice, admissions planning or application management.
How students can use it with class materials
The workflow starts with a goal and sources: for example, reviewing a set of lecture slides before an exam. Students can then tell the plugin how they want to practice. The Academy guide suggests interactive approaches such as a tutor asking one question at a time, waiting for the student’s answer and giving feedback grounded in course sources.

- Choose a study goal. Specify what you are preparing for, such as understanding a topic or reviewing for an exam.
- Select your sources. Provide course materials you are permitted to use, such as notes, readings or slides. Connected apps are optional; files can also be uploaded or text pasted.
- Set the practice style. Ask for a study guide, flashcards, a quiz, a practice test, a study plan or a guided tutoring session. For interactive practice, specify whether the plugin should ask one question at a time and give feedback after each answer.
- Work through the results. Answer questions, review explanations and use feedback to identify topics to revisit. If you need flashcards in a supported workflow, the guide documents Anki-ready CSV output.
Students can choose whether the plugin should rely only on their selected sources or also use General Knowledge. General Knowledge must be explicitly enabled. Keeping a session grounded in assigned material can make it easier to compare explanations with what the course actually teaches.
Who can access it?
OpenAI says the educator and student plugins are available in ChatGPT Edu and ChatGPT for Teachers district deployments. Availability can depend on an administrator enabling or installing the plugin, as well as workspace settings, role and permissions. This is not a universal feature for every individual ChatGPT account. The Academy guide also explains that connected-app availability varies by workspace. If an app connection is unavailable, students may still use permitted files or pasted course text.

OpenAI describes ChatGPT Edu as a product for institutions deploying AI across campus, with features including advanced tools, custom GPT sharing, higher message limits and administrative controls. Those details describe the Edu offering; they should not be taken to mean every college student has access to the College Student plugin. The help page’s privacy language specifically names ChatGPT Enterprise, so it should not be generalized to all ChatGPT Edu use.
Use it as a study aid, not a substitute for coursework
OpenAI’s guidance tells students to follow their school’s policies, avoid submitting generated work as their own and check explanations against assigned sources. The plugin can help organize practice and surface areas to review, but students remain responsible for understanding the material and meeting course requirements.

OpenAI says the plugin draws on learning science, but the product announcement and guide do not provide an independent controlled evaluation of learning outcomes. The student endorsement in the announcement is a company-published testimonial, not independent evidence that the plugin improves grades or learning.

In its August 4, 2026 announcement, OpenAI reported that more than 200 million young adults ages 18–24 use ChatGPT every week. The company also said advanced student users use ChatGPT capabilities roughly 90–99% less than power users. These are figures reported by OpenAI, not independently verified estimates in the official materials described here, and neither measures the effectiveness of the College Student plugin. The announcement also quotes Praja T., a senior at the University of Pennsylvania, describing how the plugin helps them engage with course materials and prepare for exams. That is an attributed user testimonial published by OpenAI, not an independent efficacy study.
