The wizard connects the new user to the database automatically. Interface labels vary by cPanel version and host configuration.
Choose the right cPanel database interface
For a first database and user, use Database Wizard. cPanel recommends it for creating a first database and user in one flow (cPanel Database Wizard documentation). In older installations, the same tool may be labeled MySQL Database Wizard. The database-management screen may appear as Manage My Databases or MySQL Databases, depending on the version.
- cPanel versions 120–130: the documentation calls the setup tool Database Wizard and the management screen Manage My Databases (Database Wizard).
- Version 132 and later: use Manage My Databases for administration; Database Wizard remains the documented setup flow (Manage My Databases).
- Older interfaces: look for MySQL Database Wizard or MySQL Databases (MySQL Database Wizard; MySQL Databases).
This guide covers MySQL and MariaDB. If your application specifically requires PostgreSQL, use cPanel’s separate PostgreSQL database interface rather than the MySQL steps (PostgreSQL database interfaces).
Create the database and user with Database Wizard
- Sign in to cPanel and open Databases. Select Database Wizard, MySQL Database Wizard, or the equivalent option shown in your account.
- Enter a concise database name and continue. If your host uses account prefixes, cPanel adds the prefix automatically. Use the complete name displayed by cPanel when you configure your application.
- Create a database user and password when prompted. This is a separate account from your cPanel login, email account, and website administrator account. Follow any password-strength rules displayed by your host.
- Select the privileges the application requires. Grant only the permissions it needs; choose all privileges only when the application’s instructions call for them and you understand the access being granted.
- Complete the wizard. It automatically assigns the user you created to the new database, so you do not need to add that same user again.
- Save the database name, username, and password in a secure place, then enter them in the site or application’s database configuration.
Understand names, prefixes, and limits
cPanel documentation sets a maximum database-name length of 64 characters. Underscores count as two characters toward that limit, and an account prefix, when enabled, also consumes part of the available length. Keep the name short and rely on the full name shown in cPanel rather than assuming the typed portion is the complete database name (Manage My Databases).

Database username limits vary by server family and version: cPanel documents 16 characters for MySQL 5.6 and earlier, 32 for MySQL 5.7 and later, and 47 for MariaDB. The account prefix counts toward the limit, so follow the constraints shown by your interface instead of applying one universal maximum (Manage My Databases).
Manage databases and users later
Use Manage My Databases or MySQL Databases when you need to manage existing databases and users separately, assign a user to a database, or change privileges. A database and its user are distinct objects; a user needs privileges on the database to work with it. The wizard handles this association for the user created during its setup flow.

cPanel can show database names and privileged users, but it does not reveal an existing user password. If you have forgotten it, change the password in the database-user management interface and update the application’s configuration to match.
Use phpMyAdmin for database contents, not setup
Do not create the database or database user in phpMyAdmin. cPanel warns that phpMyAdmin does not map databases for cPanel backup and restoration, which can interfere with those processes. Create and assign databases and users through cPanel; use phpMyAdmin afterward to inspect or manipulate existing database contents and run queries (Manage My Databases; MySQL Databases).

If the database option is missing
Hosting providers can enable or disable database interfaces through WHM Feature Manager. If you cannot find Database Wizard or Manage My Databases, contact your hosting provider and ask which database feature is enabled for your account. The available interface and whether the server uses MySQL or MariaDB depend on the hosting account (Manage My Databases; MySQL Databases).
