Sonnet’s Echo II DV T5 Desktop adds two external PCIe 4.0 card slots to a compatible Mac mini or MacBook Pro over Thunderbolt. It does not add slots inside the Mac: the cards sit in a separate desktop enclosure. Sonnet lists MacBook Pro models with M4 Pro or M4 Max and Mac mini models with M4 Pro among its example hosts.
What the Echo II DV T5 adds
The enclosure provides two PCIe 4.0 slots, each x16 in physical size but x4 electrically. Sonnet specifies support for two full-length, full-height, single-width cards. That distinction matters: a card can have an x16-length connector yet communicate over four PCIe lanes in this chassis.
The desktop enclosure measures 3.5 × 16.7 × 9 inches (8.9 × 42.4 × 22.9 cm) and weighs 9.7 lb (4.40 kg). It has a universal 400 W power supply, four Thunderbolt ports, and two 6-pin auxiliary power connections rated for up to 75 W each. These are Sonnet’s published specifications, not independent measurements. See Sonnet’s technical specifications.
Check the host Mac and operating system
Sonnet specifies macOS 14 or later on Macs with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt/USB4, or Thunderbolt 3. Its technical note says Intel Macs using Thunderbolt 3 require macOS 15 or later. Sonnet also lists Windows 11 systems with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, or USB4, and Linux kernel 6.12 or 6.18 (or newer) with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, or USB4. Those host-level requirements do not guarantee that a particular PCIe card has a working driver for every operating system.
#1 Best Overall
- Dual-Slot Thunderbolt 5 PCIe Expansion System: Connect two high-performance, non-GPU PCIe cards to your computer using Thunderbolt cables. Supports all Thunderbolt-compatible, single-width PCIe cards, regardless of card length or height—ideal for professional expansion workflows.
- Dual Thunderbolt 5 Interfaces with Full Bandwidth Per Slot: Features two Thunderbolt 5 connections and two PCIe 4.0 slots, delivering up to 6000 MB/s of PCIe bandwidth to each card simultaneously—no shared bandwidth, no performance compromise.
- Built for Bandwidth-Hungry Workflows: Run DV I/O cards, ultra-fast NVMe SSD adapters, and multi-port 10GbE or 25GbE network cards at full performance at the same time—perfect for video production, post-production, audio, and data-intensive environments.
- Integrated 400W Universal Power Supply: Includes dual 75W auxiliary PCIe power connectors for power-hungry cards, plus 15W of power from secondary Thunderbolt ports for connected peripherals and Thunderbolt daisy-chaining.
- Rugged, Quiet, and Broadly Compatible: Housed in durable aluminum and designed for quiet operation. Compatible with macOS (Apple silicon and Intel Macs), Windows PCs with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, or USB4, and Linux systems.
For Mac buyers, the product overview names MacBook Pro with M4 Pro or M4 Max and Mac mini with M4 Pro as example systems. Confirm the exact Mac’s ports and the card’s OS support before buying; a compatible Thunderbolt connection alone does not establish that the card will work. See Sonnet’s product overview and its technical specifications.
Bandwidth depends on the host connections
Sonnet’s current product overview publishes 6,800 MB/s of PCIe bandwidth per slot with Thunderbolt 5 hosts. It says the enclosure uses a separate Thunderbolt interface for each card slot, and specifies two independent Thunderbolt host-port connections for maximum performance when using two bandwidth-hungry cards. Treat 6,800 MB/s as Sonnet’s bandwidth figure under the stated connection conditions—not as a guarantee of application throughput or an independent benchmark. The host must also provide two independent ports; the number of physical ports alone does not establish that they are independent.

- Add Connectivity & Unlock Performance: Expand your computer with a high-performance PCIe card over Thunderbolt 5. Ideal external PCIe expansion for Mac, Windows, and Linux systems.
- Thunderbolt 5 to PCIe Expansion: Delivers up to 6000 MB/s bi-directional PCIe bandwidth for pro audio, video, storage, and networking cards.
- Wide PCIe 4.0 Card Compatibility: Supports half-length+ (7.75"), full-height, single-width PCIe 4.0 x8 cards—plus most cards that require a daughter card.
- Pro-Level Power & Connectivity: Includes auxiliary PCIe power for power-hungry cards. Second Thunderbolt port enables daisy-chaining and provides 15W to connected peripherals.
- Compact, Quiet & Rugged Build: Lightweight aluminum enclosure with temperature-controlled, variable-speed fan for extremely quiet cooling; perfect for desktops, studios, and on-set workflows.
The launch announcement is older: Sonnet’s March 5, 2025 press release described up to 6,000 MB/s per slot and called that double the available PCIe bandwidth per slot compared with previous-generation Thunderbolt PCIe expansion chassis. That is the launch-era vendor claim, distinct from the current overview’s 6,800 MB/s figure. Read the March 5, 2025 announcement alongside the current product overview rather than combining their numbers.
Verify card fit, power, and drivers
Before choosing a card, check more than its PCIe connector. Confirm the card is listed as compatible by Sonnet, fits the enclosure’s full-height, single-width limit, stays within its power provisions, and has a driver for the host operating system and the application you intend to use.

- ENHANCED COMPATIBILITY - Seamlessly integrates with macOS 14+, Windows 11, and Linux 6.1+ systems, supporting Thunderbolt 5, 4, and USB4 ports for broad device connectivity.
- ROBUST EXPANSION - Features two x16 mechanical (x4 electrical) PCIe 4.0 expansion slots, accommodating two full-length, full-height, single-width PCIe cards.
- OPTIMAL POWER DELIVERY - Provides two 6-pin auxiliary power connectors, each supplying up to 75W for PCIe cards requiring supplemental power.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY - Equipped with four Thunderbolt ports and a C14-type power input, ensuring comprehensive peripheral and power management.
- RACKMOUNT INTEGRATION - Designed as a 2U Thunderbolt rackmount enclosure, offering a professional and space-efficient solution for your setup.
- Physical fit: The published configuration supports full-length, full-height, single-width cards. A wider card may not fit even if its connector is compatible.
- Auxiliary power: The chassis has two 6-pin power connections, up to 75 W each. Check the card maker’s requirements; do not assume the slot and auxiliary leads cover a card’s needs.
- Operating-system support: Verify the card maker’s driver and Sonnet’s compatibility information for the specific OS version and host. Host compatibility is not a promise of universal card compatibility.
- Workflow: Identify whether you need a particular professional I/O, storage, or networking card, then validate that model and its software support before purchasing.
Use Sonnet’s PCIe card compatibility list as one check, and confirm current driver and power requirements with the card manufacturer.
Desktop expansion or a rack-mounted Mac mini?
The Echo II DV T5 Desktop is a standalone PCIe expansion enclosure that connects to a host computer. It is different from Sonnet’s xMac mini (2024+)/Echo II DV T5, a separate 2U rackmount system designed to house one or two Mac mini (2024+) computers and including an Echo II DV T5 expansion module. Sonnet lists Mac mini (2024+) compatibility for that rack system; see its xMac mini specifications. Choose that system when the requirement is rack mounting and Mac mini housing, not simply external PCIe slots.
