To create a course Assessment in Schoology, open the course and select Add Materials > Add Assessment. Complete the setup form, select Create, then open the assessment’s Questions area to add questions or choose items from an assessment item bank. Before students begin, check access, points, attempts, grading, and result-review settings.

Choose the right Schoology activity

Schoology has two distinct course tools: Assessments and Tests/Quizzes. This guide covers the course Assessments feature. If you intend to use Tests/Quizzes, create that material instead through Add Materials > Add Test/Quiz; it has its own question-bank workflow and settings. See Schoology’s Tests/Quizzes instructions.

Course Assessments must be created, edited, and graded in Schoology’s web version. Students can complete and submit them from mobile devices. For creation steps, sign in through a web browser and open the course where the assessment belongs.

Create the assessment

  1. Open the course. Go to the course in which you want students to take the assessment.
  2. Open the creation form. Select Add Materials > Add Assessment. You can create an assessment in a course folder or move it into a folder later.
  3. Name it and set a due date. A due date, if added, places the assessment in the Course Calendar and Upcoming area.
  4. Set student access. Choose when students can access the assessment. The documented default is Disable. If students can open it but cannot start a new attempt, review the available Enable options.
  5. Set any password. Enter one if students must provide a password before beginning.
  6. Review the grading fields. Set the assessment’s points and, where applicable, its grading category and period, midterm/final status, factor, collected status, grading scale, and advanced options.
  7. Create it. Select Create to save the assessment shell.

PowerSchool’s assessment documentation also describes options to assign an assessment to particular students or groups, publish or hide it, show grade statistics, include it in final-grade calculations, and copy it to another course. Which options appear can depend on the feature and your organization’s configuration. See PowerSchool’s assessment setup guide.

Add questions

  1. Open the assessment and go to Questions.
  2. Select a question type and enter the prompt and answer or scoring details.
  3. If useful, add an author note, which students do not see, or associate a learning objective.
  4. Save the question and repeat for each item.

PowerSchool lists standard question types such as multiple choice, true/false, matching, ordering, fill-in-the-blank text, short answer/essay, audio, and video. Enhanced types include dropdown and drag-and-drop blanks, file upload, image labeling or highlighting, hotspot, text highlighting, math short answer, number line, and chart. The documented maximum for a course Assessment is 200 questions; the current documentation does not display a publication or revision date. See the question-type and limit details.

Check the points total

Compare the assessment’s total points with the sum of the points assigned to its questions. If the totals differ, Schoology adjusts question point values for students during an attempt.

Reuse questions from an assessment item bank

Assessment item banks can be created in Personal or Group Resources. To add bank questions, open the assessment’s Questions area, select Add From Item Bank, choose a bank and the questions to use, set points, and add the items. You can also choose a randomized selection so students receive different sets of questions.

Items are copied into an assessment rather than linked to the bank. Editing a bank question later does not automatically change a copy that has already been added to an assessment. See PowerSchool’s guide to adding assessment questions.

Set attempts, access, grading, and result review

Before students start, review the assessment settings for time limits, question order, point visibility, number of attempts, how grades are calculated across multiple attempts, final-grade calculation, and what students can review after submitting. Depending on the review setting, students may see no results, their selected answers, or correct answers.

Settings changes can affect attempts that are already in progress as well as future attempts. Decide on the configuration before release where possible, and communicate changes to students if they may affect active work. PowerSchool describes these controls in its assessment settings documentation.

Preview and release the assessment

Check the student-facing experience before making the assessment available: confirm the questions, point values, access dates, attempt rules, and result visibility. The official Preview instructions apply to the separate Tests/Quizzes tool, not to course Assessments; use Preview for a Test/Quiz as described in Schoology’s Tests/Quizzes guide. Do not assume that its controls or workflow are identical to Assessments.
