Choose a cloud storage service for the workload—not a brand in the abstract. Start with the data, application and access pattern; then test candidate services against your location, resilience, protection, migration and cost requirements. A business may need object, file and block storage together, and the right choice can differ by workload.

Start with the workload, not the provider

Cloud storage services are not interchangeable. Amazon Web Services’ official storage decision guide, last updated October 5, 2026, emphasizes matching the service to the workload’s access patterns because that fit affects performance, cost, efficiency, security and resiliency. Inventory what you store, how applications use it and what happens if access is delayed or interrupted.

Choose the storage type your application needs

  • Object storage: Consider it for data handled as objects, such as files or other unstructured content, when the application is built to use an object-storage service.
  • File storage: Check whether applications require shared files and specific file protocols or existing file-system behavior.
  • Block storage: Check whether an application or server requires block devices and the expected performance characteristics.

These categories are a starting point, not a provider ranking. AWS’s guide covers services including Amazon S3, EBS, EFS and FSx, as well as backup, migration, transfer and hybrid or edge options. Map each application to the service family and protocol it can actually use; do not assume that choosing one cloud brand means every workload should use the same storage product.

Write down access and performance needs

For each workload, record expected capacity and growth, read and write frequency, latency sensitivity, throughput, access protocol, and whether it must operate across cloud, on-premises or edge environments. Include dependencies such as application changes, existing tools and data formats. These details let you compare services on a like-for-like basis rather than relying on broad claims about a provider.

Set location and residency requirements

Decide where data is allowed or required to reside before comparing prices or redundancy options. Document applicable legal, contractual and operational constraints, including whether a particular country, region or geographic boundary is required. Then check the exact locations available for the specific service; a cloud provider’s overall regional footprint does not establish that every storage service is offered in every location.

Google Cloud Storage offers regional, dual-region and multi-region location types. Google’s documentation explains that a bucket’s location determines where its object data resides and affects replication, availability characteristics and pricing. Treat location as both a governance decision and an architecture choice: a broader replication arrangement may affect where copies are stored, while a location choice can also affect cost.

Compare availability, durability and recovery separately

Availability concerns whether data can be accessed when requested. Durability concerns protection against data loss or corruption over time. Neither metric, on its own, tells you how quickly your application will recover after an outage or how much recent data it might lose.

Google Cloud says Cloud Storage is designed for at least 99.999999999% annual durability regardless of storage class and location type. That is Google’s design statement, not an independent comparison across providers and not a promise of application availability. Compare each candidate’s service terms and architecture for the workload you plan to run.

Understand replication lag and recovery objectives

Cross-region replication can reduce the impact of a regional failure, but it is not necessarily immediate. Google documents its cross-region replication as asynchronous: data that has not replicated when a region becomes unavailable may be inaccessible until that region returns.

  • For default replication, Google Cloud targets replication of 99.9% of newly written objects within one hour and 100% within 12 hours.
  • For optional turbo replication on dual-region buckets, Google Cloud’s design target is replication of 100% of new objects within 15 minutes, described as a 15-minute recovery point objective (RPO).

These are Google Cloud targets, not universal cloud benchmarks. Set an acceptable RPO (how much recent data the business can afford to lose) and RTO (how long the business can tolerate recovery taking), then verify that the proposed service and complete architecture can meet them. Redundancy alone does not constitute a disaster-recovery plan. Google advises administrators to plan a business continuity and disaster recovery architecture appropriate to the workload.

Evaluate protection, access and retention controls

Identify what the data requires over its full lifecycle, not only while it is being written. Compare the candidate service’s encryption and key-control options, identity and access controls, audit capabilities, retention settings, backup approach and recovery process against your security and compliance obligations. Verify the actual service documentation and contract for your chosen region and configuration.

Google Cloud documents Cloud Storage controls including object holds, soft delete, versioning and Bucket Lock. These controls address different needs; determine which ones apply to the workload and how they interact with retention duties and recovery. A protection feature is not a substitute for a backup strategy: define backup frequency, who can restore data, and how recovery will be tested.

Plan migration before committing to a destination

Migration can introduce downtime, security and compliance work, transfer charges and operational effort. Microsoft’s migration overview frames a complete migration as assessment, target selection, planning, tool selection and execution. Use those stages to build a path that can be tested before a production cutover.

  1. Assess: Inventory source data, dependencies, volume, access patterns, protocols, reliability and performance needs, and business, security and compliance requirements.
  2. Select the target: Confirm that the candidate storage service, location and configuration meet the workload’s requirements.
  3. Plan: Define migration sequencing, downtime tolerance, validation, permissions, retention, transfer volume and rollback or recovery steps.
  4. Select tools: Check which migration tools support the source, destination and required data path. Microsoft documents Azure Storage Mover for migration from on-premises sources or AWS S3 into Azure Storage.
  5. Execute and validate: Test with representative data and applications, verify completeness and access, and confirm security and recovery behavior before relying on the new environment.

Include an exit path in the plan as well: determine how data can be exported or moved again, what dependencies would need to change, and what transfer or labor costs that would entail.

Compare total cost for the same workload

There is no defensible universal “cheapest cloud” without the workload’s volume, location, access mix, retention, resilience target, discounts and current rates. Model each candidate with the same assumptions and use the providers’ current pricing pages and calculators for the relevant date and region. AWS notes that matching a storage service to access patterns affects cost; Google Cloud notes that location affects pricing.

  • Capacity and storage class over the expected retention period
  • Location and redundancy configuration
  • Read, write and other operation charges, plus retrieval charges where applicable
  • Data transfer into and out of the service, including egress
  • Versioning, retention, backup and recovery costs
  • One-time migration costs and any downtime impact
  • Staff time for administration, security, monitoring and ongoing operations

Make usage assumptions explicit—for example, how often data is retrieved and how much leaves the region—so a low storage-capacity quote does not obscure costs elsewhere in the workload.

Use a like-for-like shortlist and a proof of fit

Compare actual service and regional offers rather than treating AWS, Azure and Google Cloud as single storage products. For each candidate, check application compatibility and protocols, latency and throughput, availability terms, durability design, replication behavior, RPO and RTO, location choices, protection controls, migration and exit effort, support and operational burden, and the modeled total cost.

The official materials cited here establish different kinds of provider-specific information: AWS provides a service-selection guide; Google Cloud documents storage locations, protection controls and replication targets; and Microsoft describes migration planning and Azure Storage Mover. They do not establish a fair same-workload price or performance benchmark across the three providers, nor do they support a universal winner.

Before making the decision, test a representative workload and migration path. Validate the result against current service documentation and contract terms for the actual region and configuration, and confirm that security, compliance, recovery and exit requirements are met.
