If an app update is stuck or will not install, first check your internet connection and available storage, then close and reopen the app store and restart your device. If that does not help, use the troubleshooting steps for your device: iPhone or iPad, Android, or Windows.
Start with the checks that apply to any device
- Check your connection. Confirm Wi-Fi or mobile data is working. If possible, try another network.
- Check available storage. Free up space if the device is nearly full; an update may need room to download and install.
- Close and reopen the app store. Then check whether the update resumes.
- Restart the device. This can clear a temporary store or installation problem.
If only one app is affected, focus on that app’s compatibility and its platform’s single-app guidance. If several apps will not update, troubleshoot the store, device, account, or network.
Fix a stuck app update on iPhone or iPad
- Check for the update manually. Open the App Store, tap your account picture, and check the available updates. Update the app from there.
- Look for an account or payment prompt. Complete any requested verification or resolve the payment method issue. Apple notes that a valid payment method may be required even for a free app. In some countries or regions, age confirmation or Family Sharing may also be required for certain downloads. See Apple’s App Store download and update guidance.
- Prioritize the download. If the app’s icon is on the Home Screen and the download is waiting, touch and hold the icon and choose the option to prioritize its download, if shown.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad and try the update again.
If the problem is an iOS or iPadOS update
A system update is different from an app update. Check that your device supports the software version, has enough available storage, is connected to a network, and has power. If the update still fails, try another network, delete the downloaded update and download it again, or update using a Mac or iTunes. Follow Apple’s steps for updating iOS or iPadOS.
Fix a stuck download or update in Google Play
- Check Wi-Fi or mobile data and available space. Google says less than 1 GB of available storage can be an indicator of low storage that may prevent downloads or installs.
- Check Android updates and date and time. Install available Android system updates and make sure the device’s date and time are set automatically.
- Close and reopen Google Play Store, then restart the device and try again.
For a problem affecting just one app, follow Google’s guidance for a single app that will not download. If multiple apps are affected or Play Store itself is failing, use Google’s basic download troubleshooting steps and, if needed, its advanced troubleshooting guidance.

Fix an app update in Microsoft Store on Windows
- Sign in to your Microsoft account in Microsoft Store, then close and reopen the Store or affected app.
- Install available Windows updates, then check for Microsoft Store updates.
- Confirm app compatibility. The app must support the Windows version installed on your PC.
- Repair or reset the app if the earlier steps do not work. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s menu, then Advanced options. In Windows 10, look under Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the app, then Advanced options, if available.
- Reinstall the app only if repair or reset does not resolve the issue.
Microsoft’s consumer troubleshooting steps are available in its Microsoft Store app guidance. If the PC is managed by work or school, contact the administrator: policy, firewall, or proxy restrictions can block Store access. Microsoft says the Store needs Windows Update endpoints accessible to install and update apps; see its troubleshooting guidance for Store download failures.
