If you need a specific Windows desktop app to run on your laptop, a Windows laptop is usually the clearest Chromebook alternative. A Mac laptop works when the software supports macOS. But if your main concern is working without Wi-Fi, you may not need to switch: Chromebooks can handle some offline tasks through supported apps, provided you prepare and verify each workflow in advance.
Choose by the app or task you need
Start with the exact software you rely on, not a general label such as “desktop apps.” Check whether its current requirements list Windows, macOS, or Linux, and whether it must run locally. Then decide whether you need to work offline or can accept a connection-dependent option.
| Path | What it can solve | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Windows laptop | Running applications that require Windows desktop support | Check each app’s current hardware and operating-system requirements. |
| Mac laptop | Desktop workflows where the required software supports macOS | Do not assume Windows-only software is available for Mac. |
| Chromebook with offline-ready apps | Supported offline tasks such as email, schedules, and to-do lists | Offline support varies by app and workflow; preparation is often needed. |
| Linux on ChromeOS | Compatible Linux applications and development tools | It is not a general way to run Windows or Mac desktop software. |
| Remote Windows access | Using assigned Windows apps or devices from ChromeOS | Requires internet access and an assigned remote resource. |
When a Windows laptop is the right alternative
If an essential application is available only as a Windows desktop program, choose a Windows laptop and confirm the app’s current system requirements before buying. This is the most direct route when the software must run locally, including when you need to use it without an internet connection.
A Windows laptop does not guarantee that every program will work: the application may have minimum processor, memory, storage, or Windows-version requirements. Check those details with the software publisher.

When a Mac laptop will work
A Mac is a sound alternative when the software you need offers a macOS version and supports your intended workflow. Verify that the specific app—and any add-ons, peripherals, or workplace tools you depend on—supports macOS. A Windows-only app is not made compatible simply by switching to a Mac.
Can I use my Chromebook without Wi-Fi?
Yes, for supported tasks. Google says Chromebook users can use offline mode to check email, look up a schedule, organize a to-do list, and more. Its guidance describes offline-ready apps and common tasks, not a guarantee that every app or feature works without a connection. See Google’s Chromebook offline and Office-file guidance and its Chromebook FAQ.

Before disconnecting, check the offline settings and behavior of each essential app, and make sure the relevant files are available on the device. Some services may need an internet connection for sign-in, syncing, or particular features, so test the actual task you intend to do offline.
Office files on a Chromebook are not desktop Office
Chromebooks can open, edit, download, and convert many Microsoft Office files. That compatibility is useful for document work, but it is different from installing the full desktop Office suite. Microsoft says the Windows and Mac desktop versions of Microsoft 365 and Office 2016 cannot be installed on a Chromebook. Microsoft’s Chromebook guidance points users toward Microsoft 365 web apps; basic viewing and editing are available, while more advanced editing features require a subscription.

Linux on ChromeOS: useful for compatible tools, not a universal substitute
ChromeOS Linux support can run compatible Linux command-line tools, graphical apps, code editors, IDEs, and other developer tools alongside ChromeOS. It can be a practical option for a Linux or development workflow, but it does not turn a Chromebook into a general-purpose Windows or Mac laptop. Check that the particular Linux app and workflow you need are supported. Google’s Linux on ChromeOS documentation describes the feature and its development use.

Some users can access Windows apps or devices remotely from ChromeOS. This is different from installing software locally: the Windows environment is elsewhere, and the Chromebook connects to it. Microsoft’s Windows App documentation for ChromeOS requires internet access and assigned remote resources, so this approach will not meet a need for independent offline use. Check that your organization or service provides a supported account and resource before relying on it. See Microsoft’s Windows App connection guidance for ChromeOS.

A practical decision checklist
- List the applications that must work. Identify the exact app and version, not just the file types you need to open.
- Check the supported operating systems. Use the app publisher’s current requirements to confirm Windows, macOS, or Linux availability.
- Decide whether the work must be local. If the app must run without a network, remote access is not a substitute.
- Test offline tasks in advance. On a Chromebook, verify each app’s offline behavior and prepare files before disconnecting.
- Choose hardware only after confirming compatibility. Compare the requirements of your actual apps; this guide does not establish model-level performance or prices.
