It can bundle common sockets, ratchets and accessories in one case, with some sets adding combination wrenches. If you already own useful tools, buying specific sockets or wrenches separately can help you fill gaps without paying for duplicates. The better choice depends on what you own and what jobs you plan to tackle—not the piece count alone.
What is the difference?
A mechanics tool set is a preassembled bundle. Depending on the model, it may include sockets in several sizes and drive types, ratchets, extensions, adapters, bits, wrenches and storage. A separate-purchase approach means choosing those components individually or in smaller assortments, so you can target the sizes and tool types your work requires.
These options are not simply “small set” versus “large set.” Bundles differ in coverage and contents, while buying piecemeal gives you control but requires you to decide what to get. A public r/Tools discussion frames the choice as whether to buy a socket set or a full mechanic tool set; it is an example of the question, not a measure of what most buyers prefer (Reddit discussion).
When a mechanics tool set makes more sense
You are starting with few or no tools
A bundle can provide a coordinated starting collection without requiring you to select every socket, drive size and accessory individually. The CRAFTSMAN CMMT12123 is one example: the manufacturer describes its 105-piece set as suitable for a starter collection or as an addition to an existing one. It includes 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch ratchets, standard and deep sockets, spark plug sockets, extensions, a universal joint, hex keys and bits. You need several tool categories at once
Some larger bundles combine sockets with wrenches and other accessories. CRAFTSMAN describes the CMMT45938 as a 308-piece, three-drive mechanics set with sockets, ratchets, combination wrenches, drive accessories and plastic-tray storage. Its product page states a lifetime warranty (CRAFTSMAN CMMT45938 product listing).
The CRAFTSMAN CMMT72728 illustrates how broad a bundle can get: its 728-piece listing includes SAE and metric tools, sockets and bit sockets across 1/4-, 3/8-, 1/2- and 3/4-inch drives, impact sockets, ratchets, combination, ratcheting and specialty wrenches, and accessories. The page states a full lifetime warranty. That breadth demonstrates what a set can contain; it does not mean most home users need it (CRAFTSMAN CMMT72728 product listing).

When buying separately makes more sense
You already own part of a useful collection
Before buying a bundle, inventory your ratchets, sockets and wrenches. If you already have the common sizes and drive types, an all-in-one set may duplicate tools you own. Buying only missing pieces—or a smaller assortment that covers a specific gap—lets you direct the purchase toward what is absent. This is a practical decision based on your existing inventory, not a claim that separate buying is always cheaper.
You know the exact tools your work calls for
Separate purchases make it easier to choose by system (SAE or metric), drive size, socket depth and category. For example, you may need deep sockets in a particular drive size, but not another ratchet or a collection of bits. This approach rewards a clear list of the jobs and sizes you expect to handle; without that list, it is easier to overlook something useful or buy an unnecessary specialty tool.

Compare contents, not piece counts
A high piece count does not tell you whether a set covers the sizes, drive types, depths or wrench categories you need. Compare the actual inventory against your existing tools and planned work.

A practical way to decide
- List what you own. Check sockets by SAE or metric size, drive size and depth, then note your ratchets and wrench types. Include accessories you already have.
- Write down the jobs you expect to do. Decide whether you need only sockets and a ratchet or also combination wrenches, ratcheting wrenches, impact sockets, bits or specialty tools.
- Check a bundle against both lists. Confirm actual sizes, drive sizes, shallow versus deep sockets, included tool categories and storage—not just the advertised piece count.
- Choose the route with less unwanted overlap. If a bundle supplies most of what you lack, it may be a straightforward starting point. If it repeats much of your existing collection, select the specific gaps instead.
- Verify the exact listing before purchase. Check current contents, seller, price and warranty terms for the model you are considering. Warranty wording is not evidence of comparative tool quality.
Storage, warranty and price: check the specifics
Storage is part of the purchase, but a case or tray should be judged against how you will keep and move the tools. The CMMT12123 listing specifies a blow-molded case, while the CMMT45938 page describes plastic-tray storage. The available product descriptions do not establish which is more portable or compact, so compare the actual format with your toolbox and whether you need to carry the set between locations.
The cited CRAFTSMAN listings state lifetime warranties, but warranty terms should be checked for the exact model and seller. There is no like-for-like price comparison here, and no comparative evidence establishes that buying a bundle or buying separate tools is invariably less expensive or more durable. Decide from the contents and your needs, then check current terms and prices.

- Starting from zero or close to it: A well-matched mechanics tool set is often the simpler starting purchase because it groups common tools and accessories.
- Already own useful sockets and ratchets: Identify the gaps and buy those pieces rather than assuming another bundle will add enough value.
- Need a specific mix of tools: Compare the set’s exact sizes, drives, depths and wrench categories with your planned work; buy separately if the bundle’s extra contents do not serve you.
