For better battery life on a new Android phone, start by shortening screen timeout, reducing or automating brightness, enabling Adaptive Battery, and using Battery Saver when you can accept less background activity. For privacy, review permissions app by app, use approximate or while-in-use location when suitable, and check Privacy Dashboard for unexpected access. The exact settings and menu paths vary by Android version and phone maker.
Start with the settings most likely to help battery life
Google recommends reviewing screen behavior and background activity, but does not give a universal estimate of how many extra hours these changes provide. Their effect depends on the phone, apps, and how you use them.
Reduce screen-on time and brightness
- Set a shorter screen timeout so the display turns off sooner when idle.
- Lower brightness, or use automatic brightness if it suits your environment.
- Consider turning off keyboard sounds or vibration if you do not need them.
- Try Dark theme if you prefer it; its effect depends on the display and how the phone is used.
Google’s battery guidance lists these among the options to review, while noting that available settings vary by device. See Google’s battery-saving guidance for general instructions; consult your phone maker’s support page when the labels do not match.
Enable Adaptive Battery and inspect battery use
Turn on Adaptive Battery if your phone offers it, then check the battery-usage screen to identify apps consuming unusually large amounts of power. Restrict background activity selectively: limiting an app that you rely on for timely messages, alerts, syncing, or navigation can affect how it works.

Use Battery Saver as a trade-off, not a default fix
Battery Saver can limit or turn off background activity and may delay some visual effects, features, network connections, and app activity. Turn it on when you need to stretch a charge, or schedule it if your phone supports scheduling. Delayed notifications or updates while it is active may be an expected consequence, not a fault.
Review app permissions instead of disabling privacy features wholesale
Use Permission manager to review access by app or by permission type. Check location, camera, microphone, contacts, files, and other categories, and remove access an app does not need for its function. The available choices differ by permission, Android release, and manufacturer software.

For location, camera, or microphone access that is not needed continuously, choose Allow only while using the app or Ask every time where available. Some apps will need broader access for specific functions, so decide based on what you expect the app to do rather than denying every request automatically. Google’s instructions for changing app permissions describe common approaches.
For apps that do not need to remain active, consider enabling Pause app activity if unused, where available. This is an app-level choice, not a substitute for reviewing permissions that an app still has.

Use Privacy Dashboard to check recent permission access
Privacy Dashboard shows which apps accessed permissions and when. Google’s current Android Help guidance specifies a history of the last 7 days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12; these are version-specific windows, not a guarantee for every phone or release. Open the dashboard, review unexpected access, and change the relevant app permission if needed. See Google’s Privacy Dashboard instructions.
Choose location access at the right scope
Prefer app-level controls for individual apps
When only one app needs location, change that app’s permission rather than turning off Location for the whole phone. On Android 12 and later, you can manage an app’s precise-location access separately. Approximate location gives an app a general area; precise location can reveal your exact location. Choose approximate access for apps whose features do not require precision.

Know what a device-wide Location switch affects
Turning off Location prevents apps and services from getting the device’s location, but it can also affect Maps, device finding, location sharing, earthquake alerts, automatic time-zone selection, and other location features. Emergency location behavior has separate handling, so do not assume the global switch disables it. Google’s location settings guidance explains the device-level control.
Location Accuracy is different from an app’s location permission. On Android 12 and later, turning it off reduces the sources used to determine location and may make some location functions less effective. Google says Location Accuracy uses a temporary rotating identifier that is deleted within 7 days. See Google’s Location Accuracy information.

Decide whether to share Usage & diagnostics information
Usage & diagnostics is an optional device-level sharing choice, not a proven battery-saving setting. When enabled, a device may share information such as battery level, app use, and network-connection quality with Google. Turning it off does not stop information that apps collect. Google states: “Turning off usage and diagnostics won’t affect info that apps might collect.” Read Google’s Usage & diagnostics explanation and decide based on your privacy preference.
Find the controls on your Android version and phone
Menu names and organization vary. Google’s security and privacy guide says Android 13 and newer commonly group controls under Settings > Security and privacy, while Android 12 and older may separate Security and Privacy; not every device combines these pages. Battery settings and permission choices also vary, so use your manufacturer’s support instructions if a path or label differs. Google’s Android security and privacy guide describes these version differences. Keeping Android and your apps updated is also part of Google’s general battery and device guidance.
