Next, set website permissions and choose accessibility, notification, and personalization options that fit how you use the Chromebook. These are checks, not a mandatory checklist: keep features you need, and skip controls that do not apply to your device.
How do I update my Chromebook?
- Open Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Select Check for updates. ChromeOS checks automatically for updates when the Chromebook is connected to the internet, but you can check manually here.
- If an update downloads, restart the Chromebook to complete it.
Update support depends on the particular Chromebook. Check the update schedule shown for your device instead of relying on a general rule based on its age. On a work- or school-managed Chromebook, an administrator may control updates.
How do I control camera, microphone, and location access?
Review device-wide access first
Open Settings > Privacy and security > Privacy controls. Review the camera and microphone switches. Turning off device-wide access is a broad block; app or browser permissions let you make narrower choices. If the Chromebook has a physical camera or microphone switch, it must also be on for that hardware to work.
Choose the location access that fits
Location access can be allowed for apps and websites that have permission, limited to system services, or turned off. Allowing more access can support location-aware features. Restricting or disabling it may affect services such as automatic time zone and local weather. Turning off device location does not prevent websites from estimating an approximate location from your IP address.

How do I change website permissions?
Chrome lets you make permission choices for individual sites without changing the default for every site. Depending on the permission and site, options include allowing it for one visit, allowing it while visiting, or denying it.
- Open Chrome and go to the site whose access you want to review.
- Select the site information icon beside the address bar, then open Site settings.
- Choose the relevant permission, such as camera, microphone, or location, and select the access level you want for that site.
- To review broader defaults, open Chrome settings and find the site-settings or permissions controls. You can change a default and still set a different choice for an individual site.
Chrome removes permissions from sites that have not been used recently. If a site later needs access, review its permission again rather than granting access more broadly than necessary.

Which accessibility and personalization settings are worth changing?
Use the search box in Settings to find a control when menu names or locations differ between ChromeOS releases. Settings search can locate controls for privacy, connections, apps, accessibility, and system preferences.
Explore accessibility options according to your needs: ChromeOS includes tools for reading, hearing, cognitive support, and display adjustments. There is no single best accessibility profile for every user. You can also tailor notifications and other personalization options to suit your preferences; change only the controls that solve a problem or make the device more comfortable to use.

Should I change diagnostic reporting?
If privacy is a priority, review the Chromebook diagnostic reporting option under Settings > Security and Privacy. Google says reports may include Chrome settings, installed extensions, the page being visited, and device details; they may also contain personal information. A work- or school administrator may lock this setting, so it may not be changeable on a managed Chromebook.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are screen privacy features available on every Chromebook?
No. Lock on Leave is available only on supported devices. Google’s help information identifies viewing protection as available only on the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook. If you cannot find either option, your model may not support it; these are not universal Chromebook settings.
