If text copied from ChatGPT behaves oddly, identify the invisible character before removing it. Some characters that look blank control line breaks, text shaping, emoji, or reading direction; deleting them all can damage the text. Keep an untouched copy, inspect the character, then remove or replace only what you have confirmed is unwanted.
What counts as an invisible character?
“Invisible character” describes how a character appears, not what it does. Several different Unicode characters may look blank in ordinary text while affecting spacing, line breaks, or display:
- U+200B ZERO WIDTH SPACE: Marks a possible word or line break without taking up visible width. Unicode describes it as a line-break opportunity; it can be useful in writing systems that do not use visible spaces between words. Unicode Standard, Chapter 23.
- U+2060 WORD JOINER: Helps keep text together rather than allowing a break at that point.
- U+FEFF ZERO WIDTH NO-BREAK SPACE / byte-order mark: May be an encoding signature at the start of a byte stream or a character in already-decoded text. Its older use as a zero-width no-break space is deprecated in favor of U+2060. Python documentation on the utf-8-sig codec.
- U+00A0 NO-BREAK SPACE: Looks like a space but can prevent a line break between the text on either side.
- U+200C ZERO WIDTH NON-JOINER and U+200D ZERO WIDTH JOINER: Joiner controls that can affect how characters are shaped or combined.
- U+00AD SOFT HYPHEN: Marks a possible hyphenation point; its visible effect depends on where a line breaks.
Because these characters have different jobs, a cleanup rule suitable for one may be harmful for another. Directional formatting controls also deserve care: they can change the displayed order of text, so deleting them without inspection can alter meaning or obscure how a string is presented. How to find the character safely
- Save an untouched copy. Work on a duplicate so you can compare the result or restore the original if cleanup changes the text.
- Use a character-inspection feature. If your text editor has a way to reveal Unicode code points or character names, use it near the suspicious spacing or break. Look for a specific value such as U+200B or U+FEFF rather than relying on how the text looks.
- For a local check, inspect code points with Python. This small script prints each character’s position, code point, and Unicode name. Replace the sample text with your own; it runs on your computer and does not send the text to a website.

Review each result in context; a code point’s presence alone does not prove it should be removed. Avoid pasting sensitive text into an unfamiliar online checker.

Remove only characters you have confirmed are unwanted
Decide what the text needs to preserve before applying a change. For ordinary English prose, a known U+00A0 may be replaced with a regular space if you want normal wrapping. A known U+200B may be removed if the text does not rely on its line-break opportunity. Preserve U+200C and U+200D unless you know they are extraneous for the language or content. Remove U+FEFF from the body only when it is unwanted there; a byte-order mark at the start of encoded data is a decoding matter, not a reason to delete every occurrence from text.

Why broad cleanup can cause problems
Do not assume a generic whitespace trim will remove every character that looks blank. Python’s str.strip(), for example, does not remove U+200B because that character is not treated as whitespace by the relevant predicate. Use a targeted replacement when you have confirmed U+200B is unwanted. Python issue tracker discussion of U+200B and str.strip().

Likewise, avoid recipes that indiscriminately remove all format characters. Such filters can remove joiners that matter to text shaping or emoji, or controls that affect reading direction. If the text contains non-Latin writing, emoji, code, identifiers, or security-sensitive material, inspect carefully rather than applying a blanket deletion rule.
Verify the cleaned text in its destination
- Compare the cleaned copy with the original around every changed character.
- Check spacing, punctuation, line wrapping, emoji, and any non-Latin text.
- Paste the result into the field or application where the problem occurred and test the behavior again.
- If you use a cleanup utility, review how it processes text and its privacy claims before sending it sensitive content; do not treat a vendor’s claims as independent verification.
Does this mean ChatGPT added the characters?
No. A character found in copied text does not establish that ChatGPT inserted it, and invisible characters are not unique to ChatGPT. The relevant Unicode and Python documentation explains how these characters behave, but it does not establish a ChatGPT-specific cause or how often they appear in text copied from ChatGPT. Describe what you observed and clean the specific character if needed rather than treating it as proof of AI authorship.
