On a Chromebook that supports Android apps, update ChromeOS, enable Google Play in Settings, then install apps from the Play Store. If the Play Store option is missing or an app will not run, check device support and any work or school restrictions; a web app or Linux version may be an alternative, but neither is guaranteed to match the original app.
Check whether your Chromebook supports Android apps
First, check whether Google Play is available on the device. Select the time area, open Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences. Google says that if this option is missing, the Chromebook does not work with Android apps. See Google’s Android app installation instructions.
On a work- or school-managed Chromebook, an administrator may block Play Store setup or Android app downloads. If the setting is unavailable or blocked on a managed device, ask the administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction. Google describes these policy limits in its Chromebook guidance.
Install an Android app from Google Play
- Update ChromeOS. Google recommends using an up-to-date ChromeOS version before installing Android apps. Open Settings > About ChromeOS and check for updates.
- Open Play Store settings. Select the time area, then choose Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences.
- Enable Google Play. If the option is present, follow the on-screen prompts and accept the terms. If it is absent, the Chromebook does not support Android apps; on a managed device, policy may also restrict access.
- Find and install the app. Open Play Store, search for the app, and select Install.
- Open the app. Find it in the Chromebook Launcher. Apps installed on a phone or tablet are not automatically copied to the Chromebook, so download them again if you want to use them there. Google’s instructions cover installing and using Android apps.
Why an Android app may be unavailable or not work
Play Store support on a Chromebook does not guarantee that every Android app will install or run correctly. Google notes that some apps do not work on some Chromebook models. Compatibility can depend on the app’s requirements and the device’s hardware.

One potential factor is processor architecture. Android Developers explains that many ChromeOS devices use x86 chips, while many Android phones use ARM; apps that include native C or C++ code may be affected by that difference. This is one possible cause, not a diagnosis for every incompatible app. See Android Developers’ ChromeOS compatibility guidance.
If the app installs but behaves poorly, check its permissions in Android settings. Some supported newer app installations also offer resizing controls. Google explains app permissions and resizing.

Choose an alternative if the app is not compatible
Before switching, identify the task you need to complete and compare the alternative’s features, offline support, availability on your device, and setup effort. A website or Linux application can be useful, but it may not provide the same features as the Android app.

Try the service’s website first
Search for the service’s official website or web app and verify that it supports the functions you actually need. Google’s Chromebook app guidance includes examples of services available through the web, but availability and feature coverage depend on each service.

Consider Linux for compatible desktop software
If your Chromebook offers the Linux development environment, you can use it to install compatible Linux software. Google documents installing Debian packages with sudo apt install and optionally adding GNOME Software/PackageKit as a graphical package interface. Linux applications run in a container sandboxed from other web pages, applications, and ChromeOS. Applications inside the container share its permissions; USB and microphone access are not shared by default. Follow Google’s Linux environment guidance before granting access or installing software.

Troubleshoot Play Store problems
If Play Store will not open or load, Google recommends these initial checks:
- Restart the Chromebook.
- Check that the device has an internet connection.
- Install any available ChromeOS update.
- Try the common fixes in Google’s Android app troubleshooting guidance.
For privacy and data considerations, Android apps may access the Chromebook Downloads location when permitted, and some apps with location permission may also use Bluetooth. Turning off Google Play Store erases Android app data and settings on the device. Review the app’s permissions and Google’s Android app controls before changing access or disabling Play Store.
