Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Before buying a Chromebook, check the exact model’s remaining ChromeOS update date, confirm its processor, memory, and storage suit your workload, and make sure your essential apps and offline tasks will work. For older devices, read the extended-update terms carefully: opting in on eligible models removes Android apps and Google Play Store access.
1. Check how long the exact Chromebook will receive updates
Find the model’s update schedule before paying, especially if you are considering a used, refurbished, or discounted Chromebook. In ChromeOS, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details > Update schedule. Google says this shows when that Chromebook will receive its last update. You can also check Google’s Chromebook update schedule guidance.
Confirm the exact model and configuration, rather than relying on a product-family name or a seller’s estimate of the device’s age. Google’s policy says Chromebooks receive 10 years of automatic updates, but the listed date for the individual device is the practical figure to use when deciding how much support remains. See Google’s ChromeOS update policy.
Do not confuse a manufacturer’s end-of-sale date with Google’s update eligibility. Google notes that the manufacturer controls when a device stops being sold; that date does not determine its update schedule.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
2. Understand the extended-update trade-off on older Chromebooks
Some eligible Chromebooks released before 2021 can receive extended updates for a total of 10 years from the platform’s release. Eligibility and the device’s support date are model-specific; the 10-year policy does not mean every older Chromebook has the same amount of support left.
There is also a significant compatibility cost. Google says that opting into extended updates removes Android apps and Google Play Store access, and the opt-in cannot be reversed. If you depend on Android apps, check the device’s current status and the consequences before choosing this option. Details are in Google’s extended-updates support page.

3. Match the hardware configuration to what you do
Compare the exact CPU, RAM, and storage configuration with your typical workload—not just the Chromebook’s brand or model family. Consider whether you regularly keep many tabs open, join video calls, save files for offline use, run Android apps or Linux development tools, or connect external monitors. Configurations can differ by market, so check the listing’s precise SKU and specification sheet.
Google for Education’s selection guide gives examples of 4GB RAM for a basic classroom segment and 8GB RAM with higher-capability processor examples for advanced use, including heavy multitasking and external displays. These are education-focused workload examples, not universal consumer minimums or guarantees that every Chromebook with those specifications will perform alike. Also check whether the built-in storage is sufficient for your downloaded files and apps. If you expect to rely on external storage, confirm that the Chromebook has a suitable port and that your storage device works with your setup.
4. Verify essential apps, files, and offline tasks
Write down the applications and specific features you need, then confirm they work on the Chromebook you are considering. Google says Microsoft 365 can be used on Chromebooks to open, edit, download, and save Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. That does not by itself establish that every feature, account setup, subscription, or workflow you use will work exactly as it does on another computer.

Ask the same questions about offline use. Google says selected tasks, such as checking email and schedules, can work without Wi-Fi. If you need to work offline, verify the particular app’s offline support and make sure required files are available on the device before you lose connectivity. Google’s Chromebook FAQ covers Microsoft 365, offline use, storage, and battery questions.
5. Judge the screen, input, ports, and battery on the actual device
Check the precise configuration and, if possible, try the device in person. Screen size and quality, keyboard and touchpad comfort, weight, webcam, and available ports can matter as much as the processor for everyday use. A Chromebook name alone does not establish these details, and listings may describe multiple configurations.

Check the battery information for the specific configuration and read how the estimate was obtained. Google notes that battery life depends on the model and how it is used, so a generic Chromebook runtime is not enough to predict your experience.
List the peripherals your setup requires—such as a headset, webcam, mouse, external storage, cable, adapter, or charger—and confirm the Chromebook has compatible ports or supports the connection you need. Google for Education identifies these as Chromebook-compatible accessory categories, but compatibility still depends on the selected device and your setup.

Use the same criteria for each device so a low price or familiar model name does not obscure a support or compatibility gap.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Update support | The exact device’s last-update date and the support time remaining. |
| Hardware | The precise processor, RAM, and storage configuration against your workload. |
| Apps and offline use | Support for must-have apps, required features, account or subscription needs, and offline tasks. |
| Physical fit | Screen, keyboard, touchpad, weight, webcam, and ports for your use. |
| Battery | Evidence for the exact configuration, interpreted in light of the model and your expected use. |
| Price | The current listing price in your market, compared with the device’s support, configuration, and fit. |
There is no single best Chromebook established by these checks: the right choice depends on the specific device, its remaining support, and whether its hardware and software fit your needs.
