Motion blur softens or streaks moving image detail; chromatic aberration separates colors, creating colored fringes around edges. They imitate different camera effects, so changing one will not produce the same result as changing the other. If you are deciding what to adjust, look for each setting separately and test it in motion.

What motion blur does

Motion blur smears or softens image detail in the direction a camera or object moves. It imitates how a camera records movement during an exposure. Unity’s documentation describes the effect as blurring the image in the direction of camera movement: Unity: Motion Blur.

Game developers may use it to make fast movement feel more apparent or to give the view a cinematic camera quality. In NVIDIA’s GPU Gems 3 chapter on motion blur, Gilberto Rosado describes motion blur as a way to simulate speed. The chapter also discusses how it may smooth a game’s appearance, particularly at 30 frames per second or less; that is a design rationale, not a guarantee that blur will look better to every player.

How a game produces the effect varies. One post-processing approach estimates movement for pixels and samples the image along that motion. Camera movement can blur otherwise static scene details, while moving objects may need their own motion data. Engine documentation also describes controls such as shutter angle and sample count: a larger shutter angle produces stronger blur, while sample count affects quality and performance. Those are engine-level examples, not controls every game offers.

What chromatic aberration does

Chromatic aberration separates colors, usually appearing as colored fringes near image edges. It imitates a lens that does not bring all colors to the same point. Unity HDRP describes this lens effect in its Chromatic Aberration documentation; Epic’s Unreal Editor for Fortnite documentation likewise describes RGB color separation.

Unlike motion blur, chromatic aberration is not directional smearing caused by movement. Its visual character is color fringing. Engine-level implementations can offer settings such as intensity, quality, a start offset, or a spectral lookup texture to customize fringe color. A retail game may expose different controls—or no separate control at all.

How the effects differ

Comparison Motion blur Chromatic aberration
What changes on screen Moving detail softens or streaks along the direction of movement Colors separate, creating colored fringes around details
Camera effect being imitated Exposure capturing a moving camera or subject A lens failing to focus all colors at the same point
Possible design purpose Make speed more legible or create a cinematic camera feel Add a lens-like or stylized camera artifact
Examples of engine controls Shutter angle, sample count, blur amount, or per-object behavior Intensity, quality, start offset, or spectral color lookup

The controls listed are examples documented by Unity and Epic, not a universal menu specification. The image-quality trade-off is also personal: blur can make moving details less distinct, while color fringing can make edges look less neutral.

Can you adjust them separately in a game?

Some games list separate controls. For example, EA’s Jedi: Fallen Order PC visual-settings page lists Motion Blur and Chromatic Aberration independently. That example confirms that a game can let you change one without the other; it does not establish how commonly games do this.

Which effect should you change?

  • Moving scenes look too soft or streaked: Reduce or disable motion blur if the game allows it. Compare while panning the camera and moving through the scene.
  • Colored outlines distract you: Lower or disable chromatic aberration if that control is available. Reducing its intensity directly reduces the color-separation effect.
  • You are unsure which setting causes the look: Change one effect at a time, then compare the same scene. Their visual results differ, so testing separately makes it easier to identify what you are seeing.
  • You like a stylized or cinematic presentation: You may prefer to keep some amount of either effect. The right choice depends on the game, display, and your own preference.

Disabling an effect does not guarantee a frame-rate gain. Unity notes that motion-blur sample count affects performance, and NVIDIA describes implementation trade-offs, but those sources do not establish a universal performance result across games, settings, and hardware. The actual impact depends on the game’s implementation and your system.
