A character can be present in a string without producing a visible glyph, and some invisible characters are legitimate parts of writing or text layout.
What counts as a hidden Unicode character?
“Hidden Unicode” is not one character or a single Unicode property. Some characters may render completely invisibly and take no space when the rendering system does not explicitly support them. The Unicode Consortium describes this behavior for default-ignorable characters in its FAQ on display of unsupported characters.
Examples to recognize include U+200B ZERO WIDTH SPACE, U+200C ZERO WIDTH NON-JOINER, U+200D ZERO WIDTH JOINER, U+2060 WORD JOINER, U+00AD SOFT HYPHEN, variation selectors, and bidirectional controls. This is not an exhaustive list; the Unicode Character Database defines properties that can be used to find relevant characters.
Invisible format characters are distinct from ordinary whitespace. The Unicode FAQ says that no characters have both the White_Space property and the Default_Ignorable_Code_Point property.

Inspect the underlying characters
Use a character-inspection tool that shows each character’s code point and Unicode name, such as U+200B ZERO WIDTH SPACE. A visual highlight alone may not identify what is in the string, and a font may not display a character at all. Where available, inspect relevant Unicode properties as well as the name.
If you already have the text in Python, this short snippet prints each character’s position, code point, name, and general category:

print(index, codepoint, name, category)This is an inventory, not a security verdict. Python’s general category does not identify every character that might be invisible or suspicious. For a more complete assessment, consult the relevant properties in the Unicode Character Database, documented in Unicode Standard Annex #44.
Review characters in context
Pay attention to characters unexpected for the language or purpose of the text, including format characters, unusual spaces, soft hyphens, variation selectors, and bidirectional controls. This is a practical review heuristic, not a rule that one character category captures every problem.

Check bidirectional controls especially carefully. Unicode Standard Annex #9 describes directional marks, embeddings, overrides, and isolates. U+202E RIGHT-TO-LEFT OVERRIDE, for example, changes how subsequent text is treated for direction. The annex says overrides “are to be avoided wherever possible, because of security concerns.” That does not mean every directional control is malicious: legitimate writing and layout can use directional marks and other controls.
Do not remove a character just because it is invisible. Joiners can affect shaping, zero-width spaces can influence word segmentation, and word joiners can affect line breaking. The Unicode Standard also discusses security risks from misplaced format controls and variation selectors, and describes showing otherwise invisible characters with explicit markers where appropriate. Finding a character does not establish who inserted it or why.

Preserve the text before making changes
- Keep an untouched copy. Save or duplicate the original string before editing or cleaning it.
- Record the findings. Note the code point and name of each unexpected character, along with its position and surrounding text.
- Decide whether it is erroneous in context. Consider the language, shaping, direction, and layout needs before removing anything.
- Make targeted edits and inspect the result. Change only characters you have determined are unwanted, then check that the text still displays and behaves as intended.
If you are building a viewer or editor, a “show hidden” mode can display explicit markers for characters that otherwise have no visible glyph. Unicode 18.0 discusses this as one way to reveal invisible characters in appropriate situations.

When selecting or building a character inspector, look for code points and Unicode names, relevant properties and bidirectional controls, and a way to review findings before removal. It should also avoid treating language-dependent characters such as joiners as errors by default. No single regular expression is a reliable universal detector for every hidden or risky Unicode character; the relevant property data and the text’s context matter.
