U.S. Treasury bills offer a defined maturity payment: if you hold a bill to maturity, the U.S. Treasury pays its face value. Bitcoin has no maturity date or promised repayment; its value depends on the market price when you sell. That makes bills more predictable in nominal value, while Bitcoin carries substantially greater price uncertainty. Neither comparison establishes which will earn more over a particular period.
How Treasury bills and Bitcoin produce returns
Treasury bills have a term and a maturity payment
Treasury bills are short-term U.S. government securities with maturities of one year or less. TreasuryDirect lists regular terms from four weeks to 52 weeks. Bills are sold at a discount or at par; at maturity, the holder receives the face value. For a discounted bill held to maturity, the difference between the purchase price and face value is the interest earned. TreasuryDirect’s bill overview explains the mechanics and available terms.
The return is set through the auction process, so a TreasuryDirect buyer does not know the bill’s interest rate before the auction. To understand a quoted rate, identify the bill’s term, auction and purchase dates, and yield convention. Also distinguish the auction’s quoted rate from the return actually earned if you buy later or sell before maturity. TreasuryDirect’s bill information describes auction pricing.
Bitcoin’s return depends on the price when you sell
Bitcoin has no contractual maturity value. A holder’s gain or loss depends on the purchase price and the price received on sale, as well as any fees and applicable taxes. The SEC describes Bitcoin as highly speculative and historically volatile. SEC investor guidance on crypto asset securities discusses the risks.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
That is why a fair comparison needs a common holding period and clearly stated measurement. For Bitcoin, specify exact start and end dates and whether fees and taxes are included. For a bill, state its term, auction or purchase date, quoted-yield convention, and whether it was held to maturity. A bill held to maturity has a known face-value payment; Bitcoin’s future sale value is unknown in advance. A bill’s quoted auction discount rate and Bitcoin’s price change are not equivalent measures.
Are Treasury bills safer than Bitcoin?
“Safer” depends on the risk that matters. For nominal principal at a stated maturity, a bill held to maturity has a defined payment from the U.S. Treasury. Its market price can still fluctuate before maturity, and a sale then may return more or less than the amount due at maturity. Bitcoin has no promised repayment, and its market price can move sharply in either direction. The SEC warns that “The risk of loss for individual investors who participate in transactions involving crypto assets, including crypto asset securities, remains significant.” The SEC bulletin provides the context for that warning.

The comparison does not mean bills are risk-free in every sense, or that Bitcoin’s price must fall. It means the two assets expose a holder to different kinds of uncertainty: bills have a defined maturity payment but can face price risk if sold early, while Bitcoin’s sale price is uncertain regardless of a maturity date because it has none.
Can I sell a Treasury bill before it matures?
Yes. Treasury securities are marketable, meaning they can be transferred or sold before maturity. TreasuryDirect defines the term this way: “’Marketable’ means that you can transfer the security to someone else and you can sell the security before it matures (reaches the end of its term).” TreasuryDirect’s marketable securities overview explains the category. If you sell early, the sale price may differ from the amount you would receive at maturity; the actual outcome depends on the price available when you sell.

Bitcoin can also be sold, but the ability to trade does not guarantee a particular price or frictionless execution. Trading liquidity depends on market conditions and the venue used. The available sources do not establish directly comparable figures for Bitcoin and bills on market depth, spreads, or execution costs. Treasury describes the Treasury securities market generally as the largest and most liquid securities market in the world, while noting that liquidity varies by instrument; that general characterization is not a head-to-head measure of every bill transaction against Bitcoin. The relevant Treasury-market regulation contains that market-liquidity characterization.
What to compare before choosing
- When you need the money: Match the bill’s maturity to your cash needs. Selling early introduces price uncertainty. Bitcoin has no maturity date, so you must decide when to sell and accept the market price then available.
- Price movement you can tolerate: A bill held to maturity has a defined face-value payment. Bitcoin’s market value can rise or fall sharply, making the holding period and chosen start and end dates central to any comparison.
- Costs and access: Consider any purchase or sale fees, spreads, taxes, and the steps required to access each asset. No directly comparable execution-cost figure is established here.
- Custody and access recovery: Bitcoin custody requires a choice between managing private keys yourself and relying on a third party. Consider both the consequences of losing access and the risks of provider failure.
- Tax treatment: TreasuryDirect says bill interest is federally taxable and exempt from state and local taxes. Bitcoin’s tax treatment is not established by the sources cited here, so check the rules that apply to your circumstances.
Bitcoin custody: keys, wallets, and physical devices
A Bitcoin wallet manages private keys; it does not store Bitcoin itself. Losing access credentials can mean losing access to the assets. A cold wallet is typically a physical device that is less exposed to internet threats, but it can be lost, damaged, or stolen. Third-party custody can add risks tied to the provider’s failure or your ability to access the account. SEC investor materials describe these custody considerations.

A hardware wallet is one physical-device option for holding private keys. It does not reduce Bitcoin’s price risk, and physical loss or damage remains possible. No particular device or security outcome is implied by the category.

There is no answer without a defined comparison period and measurement. To compare past results, use the same start and end dates, account for whether a bill was held to maturity, and state whether fees and taxes are included. A Bitcoin price change over selected dates does not by itself establish the return an investor would have realized after costs, just as an auction discount rate does not describe the result of every possible bill purchase and sale.

The available sources do not provide a matched-period total-return series for both assets, so they do not establish a historical winner or support a prediction about future performance. Bitcoin’s price can change sharply over time; Treasury bill returns are tied to auction pricing and the bill’s term, with a known face-value payment if held to maturity.
