ChatGPT text can look different after you paste it because Word or Google Docs decides whether to keep the copied appearance, adapt it to the document’s styles, or remove formatting. For a clean paste, use the destination app’s “paste without formatting” command; if you want some bold or italics to remain, choose a merge-formatting option where available.
Why does ChatGPT text change appearance when pasted?
The receiving app controls the paste result. Depending on the paste command and the styles already in your document, it may preserve the source formatting, merge the text into the destination paragraph’s style, or strip formatting and non-text content. Microsoft describes these as Keep Source Formatting, Merge Formatting, and Keep Text Only in Word desktop (Microsoft Support: Control the formatting when you paste text).
That explains why the same passage may appear with a different font, spacing, or emphasis in different documents—or even in the same document when you choose a different paste command. A Google Docs Product Expert, replying in a community thread on October 30, 2023, suggested that copied material from outside sources can bring along code that conflicts with Docs. That is a support explanation, not a universal technical specification of what ChatGPT places on the clipboard (Google Docs Editors Community).
The exact clipboard content is not established for every combination of ChatGPT client, browser, operating system, and destination app. So it is more accurate to focus on the destination’s paste behavior than to assume ChatGPT always copies HTML, Markdown, or one particular rich-text format.

How do I paste ChatGPT text into Google Docs without formatting?
- Place the cursor where the text should go in Google Docs.
- Paste without formatting: press Ctrl+Shift+V on a PC or Command+Shift+V on a Mac. Google lists these shortcuts for Docs (Google Docs Editors Help: Keyboard shortcuts for Google Docs).
- Apply the document’s heading styles, spacing, and any emphasis you need afterward.
This is the simplest option when unwanted fonts, spacing, or other source styling are the problem. It removes formatting, so you may need to restore deliberate bold or italic emphasis in the document.
When you want structured Markdown instead
If the copied content is Markdown and you want Docs to convert its structure, use right-click > Paste from Markdown. Google documents this separately from plain-text pasting and also provides an Enable Markdown preference (Google Docs Editors Help: Use Markdown in Google Docs, Slides, & Drawings). Choose this workflow for Markdown you want turned into structured formatting, not as a general fix for every paste from ChatGPT.

How do I paste ChatGPT text into Word desktop?
Word desktop offers three choices, each suited to a different goal:

For a one-time paste, use Word’s Paste Options control and choose the option that fits your goal. To make text-only pasting the default for material copied from ChatGPT or another application, open File > Options > Advanced, then change the setting under Cut, copy, and paste for Pasting from other programs. If Paste Options is not visible, Microsoft says you can enable it in the same Advanced options area. The control may not appear when the clipboard contains pure text. Paste controls and available options can vary by application and platform; Microsoft notes that many Paste Special options are limited to Windows desktop apps (Microsoft Support: Paste Special).
How does pasting work in Word for the web?
Word for the web does not behave exactly like desktop Word; browser technology creates some limitations. While editing, use Ctrl+Shift+V in Chrome, Firefox, or Chromium-based Edge on Windows, or Command+Shift+V on Mac to paste text only. Microsoft also says text copied in Reading view and pasted outside Word is inserted without formatting. Its guidance notes that paste controls and clipboard behavior can differ by browser and from desktop Word (Microsoft Support: Copy and paste in Office for the web).

Which paste method should I use?
- Remove unwanted styling: paste without formatting in Google Docs, or choose Keep Text Only in Word desktop.
- Match the document but retain emphasis: choose Merge Formatting in Word desktop.
- Keep the copied appearance: choose Keep Source Formatting in Word desktop.
- Convert Markdown structure in Google Docs: use Paste from Markdown rather than plain-text paste.
When plain-text pasting removes more than you wanted, apply the destination document’s styles afterward. That gives you consistent headings and spacing without relying on copied formatting.
