For many households looking for one general-purpose hand-tool drive, 3/8-inch is a practical starting point, but the right set depends on your repairs, access, and hardware.
Understand drive size versus socket size
A ratchet’s drive size describes the square post that connects to the socket. Common hand-tool sizes are 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch. The socket’s size—such as 10 mm or 1/2 inch—describes the fastener head it fits. The ratchet, socket, and any extension must use compatible drive connections. A larger drive is not a larger fastener-size marking; it is a different connection for the tool and socket.
NAPA’s socket-wrench buying guide describes 3/8-inch drive as a useful option for covering many commonly used sockets. Treat it as a starting point, not a guarantee that one set will cover every household repair.
Choose a drive size for your work

These are general selection guidelines from NAPA, not a substitute for checking the fastener and the tool requirements of a particular repair. If you already own sockets or extensions, consider whether the new set’s drive size matches them.

Decide between metric and SAE sockets
Metric sockets are marked in millimeters; SAE sockets are marked in fractional inches. The fastener determines which system fits—using a close but incorrect size can damage the fastener. NAPA notes that modern vehicles commonly use metric hardware while older domestic vehicles often use SAE hardware. For home repairs, inspect the nuts and bolts you expect to work on rather than assuming that one system will cover every job.
If your work spans both systems, look for a set with metric and SAE sockets and review its size list. A dual-system label alone does not tell you whether the set includes the particular sizes you need or whether it skips sizes.

Check socket shape, depth, and tool type
Six-point or twelve-point
A six-point socket contacts all six sides of a hex fastener. NAPA recommends six-point sockets for larger hardware or work involving serious torque. A twelve-point socket can be easier to position because it offers more engagement positions, but consider six-point sockets for demanding fasteners.
Shallow or deep
Use a shallow socket where clearance permits. If a long stud or bolt extends past the nut and prevents a shallow socket from seating, a deep socket provides room for it inside the socket. Deep and shallow sockets still need to match the drive and fastener size.

Hand ratchet or impact wrench
For a hand ratchet, choose sockets intended for hand-tool use. If you use a pneumatic or electric impact wrench, select sockets specifically designed for impact tools; ordinary chrome hand sockets are not the right choice for impact use. An impact-rated socket set is a separate need from a starter set for hand ratcheting.
Extensions and reach
An extension adds reach when a fastener is recessed or difficult to access; it does not change the socket’s size or drive compatibility. Choose one that matches the ratchet and socket drive.

Compare what a set actually includes
Before buying, inspect the contents rather than relying on the piece count. A useful comparison covers:
- Drive sizes included and compatibility with tools you already own
- Metric, SAE, or both systems, including the actual sizes and any gaps
- Shallow and deep socket coverage
- Six-point or twelve-point sockets
- Ratchet and extension inclusion
- Whether sockets are designed for hand use or impact use
- Case organization that makes it practical to find and return each socket

A higher piece count does not, by itself, establish better coverage. The listed ranges, size gaps, depth options, drive, and intended tool use matter more than the headline count.
Make the choice from the fasteners outward
- Identify the repairs you expect to do and inspect the fasteners, where possible, to determine their sizes and whether they are metric or SAE.
- Choose a drive size suited to the work: 1/4 inch for smaller fasteners or tight access, 3/8 inch as a versatile starting point, or 1/2 inch for larger fasteners and greater torque.
- Match the set’s size list to the fasteners. For mixed hardware, select both metric and SAE coverage only after checking the included sizes.
- Add deep sockets if a stud blocks a shallow socket from seating, and matching-drive extensions if you need extra reach.
- If you will use an impact wrench, choose sockets specifically designed for impact tools rather than relying on ordinary hand sockets.
Exact needs vary by repair, fastener, region, and tools already owned. NAPA’s advice is a retailer’s buyer guidance, while Milwaukee’s pages establish only the listed specifications of those models.
