To make a game look sharper, first reduce or turn off motion blur if the image smears when you move. Then compare the game’s TAA and DLSS options in a scene with both fine detail and movement. Motion blur, anti-aliasing, and upscaling do different jobs, so the best-looking choice depends on the game, its implementation, and your output resolution.

What motion blur, TAA, and DLSS each do

These settings affect different parts of the image. Knowing which problem each one addresses makes it easier to choose what to change.

  • Motion blur deliberately smears moving objects, the camera view, or both to create a sense of motion. It is the first setting to test when movement itself looks blurry.
  • Temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) uses information from previous frames to smooth jagged edges and reduce flicker. That frame history can also soften fine details or create ghost trails in difficult movement.
  • DLSS Super Resolution uses motion data and information from prior frames to reconstruct a higher-resolution output from lower-resolution input. It is not simply a sharpening filter, and the result depends on the game, its implementation, the selected mode, and output resolution.

NVIDIA describes DLSS Super Resolution as using “motion data and feedback from prior frames” to build output from lower-resolution images. That is the vendor’s description of the technology, not a guarantee that it will look sharper than native rendering in every game.

Should you turn motion blur off?

If the image looks smeared mainly while the camera or objects move, reduce or disable motion blur and compare again. This is the most direct test for intentional motion smearing. It will not fix TAA ghosting, a low render resolution, or problems with a game’s upscaler.

Some games offer separate camera and object motion-blur controls, while others provide a single slider or on/off switch. The names and options vary, so check the game’s graphics or display settings rather than assuming there is one standard menu path.

Does TAA make games blurry?

It can make fine detail look softer, but TAA also helps stabilize edges and reduce flickering as the camera moves. Whether that trade-off is worthwhile depends on the scene and the game’s rendering pipeline.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Unity’s Universal Render Pipeline 15.0.4 documentation says TAA uses a color history buffer to smooth edges in motion and reduce flickering. It also warns that ghosting can occur in extreme situations, such as a fast-moving object against a contrasting surface. This describes the technique in that engine documentation; individual games can behave differently.

When comparing TAA with another option, look at both a still area with fine textures and a moving scene. A mode that looks crisp while standing still may show more edge shimmer or flicker in motion, while a smoother mode may retain less texture detail.

Is DLSS sharper than native rendering?

There is no universal answer. DLSS Super Resolution reconstructs the output using lower-resolution input and temporal information; image quality varies with the selected mode, output resolution, game content, and how the developer integrated it. Compare it in the game you play rather than treating “DLSS” as a single fixed image-quality setting.

If DLSS looks unexpectedly soft, the cause may be implementation details that a player cannot adjust in the menu. NVIDIA’s developer guidance identifies factors such as mip bias, motion-vector accuracy, jitter, and the upscaler’s position in the rendering chain. A sharpness slider, if the game has one, may change perceived edge contrast, but it cannot necessarily correct those underlying issues.

Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation explains that temporal upscalers use current and previous frames. It also notes that a lower screen percentage leaves the upscaler with less rendered information per output pixel, so more texture information per rendered pixel is needed to maintain output sharpness. The exact controls and result depend on the game’s engine pipeline.

Should you use DLAA or DLSS?

They serve different resolution goals. NVIDIA describes DLAA as using the same Super Resolution technology at native resolution for anti-aliasing. DLSS Super Resolution is intended to reconstruct a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution render. DLAA is therefore the relevant option to compare when you want native-resolution anti-aliasing; DLSS Super Resolution is the option to compare when you want an upscaled output.

How to compare settings in your game

A short, controlled comparison is more useful than applying a universal preset. Use a representative scene where fine detail and movement are both visible, and keep the output resolution and other graphics settings unchanged while testing.

  1. Choose a repeatable scene. Find a location with fine textures or narrow edges, then include camera movement or moving objects. Also inspect a stationary detail area.
  2. Test motion blur first. Turn it down or off and check whether movement looks less smeared. Avoid changing anti-aliasing or upscaling at the same time.
  3. Compare the available anti-aliasing and upscaling modes. Test the game’s TAA, DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, or other offered choices individually. Not every game provides every mode.
  4. Check the image in motion and at rest. Look for fine-texture retention, edge shimmer or flicker, ghost trails behind moving objects, and intentional motion smearing.
  5. Judge at your normal display distance. Choose the image that looks best at the resolution and viewing distance you actually use, not only when zoomed in on a screenshot.

Where the game displays performance information, include the performance cost in your decision: the available modes and their costs are title-specific, and there is no cross-game performance figure that settles the choice.

What to do when none of the options looks sharp

  • If moving objects or camera pans smear, test a lower motion-blur setting.
  • If fine detail looks soft but edges are stable, compare the game’s anti-aliasing and upscaling modes at the same output resolution.
  • If trails appear behind moving objects, compare another anti-aliasing option and inspect the same high-contrast movement again.
  • If DLSS remains unexpectedly soft, the issue may lie in game-side integration rather than a player-accessible setting. Menu adjustments cannot necessarily correct motion vectors, jitter, mip bias, or rendering order.

NVIDIA’s Streamline SDK guidance also recommends reducing motion-blur distance or magnitude when a developer enables DLSS Frame Generation. That is an integration recommendation for Frame Generation, not a general rule that applies to every player using DLSS Super Resolution.
