Compare the same game edition and checkout total in your region, then weigh refund rules, availability, and the specific game’s DRM and client requirements. Steam and Epic generally use a two-week, under-two-hours refund framework for eligible games; GOG publishes a 30-day voluntary refund policy that can apply even after play, subject to its discretion.
At a glance: how the stores differ
| Store | Refund policy for games | Regional pricing and availability | Access model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Usually within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of play; other product types have separate rules. Valve says it reviews requests outside the stated rules. | Restrictions vary by game. Check the product listing for your region. | Requirements depend on the particular game; the cited policy information does not establish that every Steam game has the same DRM or online requirements. |
| Epic Games Store | Generally, eligible games must be marked refundable or self-refundable, purchased within 14 days, and have less than two hours of runtime. Exclusions apply. | Epic says it supports regional pricing in more than 190 countries and over 30 territories. Its developer documentation describes a separate measure: 43 local currencies. | Requirements depend on the particular game; check its listing and product terms. |
| GOG | Voluntary policy allows a refund request up to 30 days after purchase, including after download, launch, or play. GOG reserves discretion in individual cases. | Pricing can vary by country and title. GOG announced Turkish lira support and regional pricing updates for Türkiye in June 2025. | GOG presents its selection as DRM-free and says its GOG GALAXY client is optional. Individual game details still matter. |

How to compare prices fairly
A headline price or sale badge alone does not establish which store is cheaper. For a useful comparison, match all of these conditions:
- The same game and edition: A deluxe edition, bundle, or version with different extras is not a like-for-like price.
- Your region and currency: Prices and availability can differ by country. Epic says its store supports regional pricing in more than 190 countries and over 30 territories; its developer pricing overview separately describes support for 43 local currencies. Those figures measure different things, not a comparable count of markets across storefronts. Epic Games FAQ; Epic developer pricing overview.
- The checkout total: Compare the amount shown at checkout, including any applicable taxes, rather than assuming the displayed base prices settle the difference. Tax treatment is not established by the policy sources cited here.
- The same moment: Promotions change. Compare live prices on the same date, and recheck before purchasing.
GOG’s agreement describes different pricing schemes across catalogue titles; its announcement of Turkish lira support and regional pricing updates for Türkiye on 3 June 2025 does not mean every title has uniform local pricing. GOG’s Türkiye pricing announcement. Steam also warns that regional restrictions are game-specific, so confirm that the title can be purchased and played in your market. Refunds: deadlines, playtime, and exceptions
Steam
Steam’s standard refund terms for games are requests made within two weeks of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Valve puts it plainly: “You can request a refund for nearly any purchase on Steam—for any reason.” That does not make every request automatically eligible: Valve says it will review requests outside the described rules, and approved refunds are issued within a week. DLC, bundles, in-game purchases, and hardware have separate rules, so the game standard should not be applied to those products. Steam refund policy.
Epic Games Store
For a game to qualify under Epic’s general policy, it typically needs to be labeled refundable or self-refundable, be purchased within 14 days, and have less than two hours of runtime. Some products are excluded, including certain consumables and items marked non-refundable. For products that are refundable but not self-refundable, Epic Support may need to handle the request. Check the label and terms on the product rather than assuming all games qualify. Epic refund policy.

GOG
GOG’s voluntary policy allows a refund request up to 30 days after purchase, even if the product was downloaded, launched, or played. GOG describes the change this way: “The updated policy lets you refund a product up to 30 days after purchase, even if it was downloaded, launched, and played.” The policy retains discretion to refuse requests in individual cases; GOG may offer a cash refund or GOG Wallet credit. Local statutory rights depend on the buyer’s jurisdiction and are not replaced by this summary. GOG refund policy.
DRM, clients, and offline access
GOG markets its selection as DRM-free and says GOG GALAXY is optional. It lists client features such as cloud saves, update rollbacks, and achievements. That describes GOG’s stated access model; it is not proof that every game on GOG behaves identically, nor that every Steam or Epic game requires an always-online connection. For the title you want, check its store listing and publisher notes for DRM, launcher, account, and offline-play requirements. GOG GALAXY information.

Which store should you choose?
- Choose based on price only after comparing the same edition and checkout total in your region on the same date.
- Prioritize Steam or Epic’s standard refund window if you are comfortable with the usual two-week and under-two-hours framework and have verified that the product is eligible.
- Consider GOG’s policy if a longer voluntary request window and GOG’s stated DRM-free model matter to you, while keeping its individual-case discretion in mind.
- Check regional access before buying: price localization does not guarantee that a particular game is available or unrestricted in your country.
- Verify game-specific requirements if offline play, a launcher, or DRM is decisive. Store-level positioning does not establish every title’s exact implementation.
There is no supported numeric ranking of the three stores’ regional reach: the available figures for Epic count unlike measures, and comparable official Steam or GOG counts are not stated in the cited sources. Nor do policy descriptions establish a cheapest store for any particular game. The right choice depends on the live listing and terms for the game, edition, and market you are buying in.
