Operators need particulate controls for particles, gas-phase filtration for corrosive gases, and site measurements to determine whether those controls are working.
What counts as data center contamination, and where does it come from?
Contamination includes airborne particles and gaseous pollutants. It can enter with outdoor air or be introduced inside the room by equipment, packaging, stored materials, printing, and foot traffic. ASHRAE’s 2023 Handbook—HVAC Applications, Chapter 20, identifies uncrating equipment and storing boxes or dirty equipment in the room as avoidable dust sources. Nearby printing can add paper dust, and entrances without foot-wipe pads can provide another pathway.
What does contamination do to servers and cooling systems?
Particles can restrict airflow and reduce cooling effectiveness
Dust and debris accumulate on filters in air conditioners and IT equipment. As those filters clog, cooling becomes less effective and energy use can rise; ASHRAE also links the resulting conditions to shorter IT-equipment life. How much a particular system is affected depends on its design, contamination burden, and maintenance—not a fixed temperature increase or predictable failure rate.
Higher equipment density can increase heat load per unit volume and the airflow needed to remove it. ASHRAE’s 2011 contamination guideline notes that increased airflow also increases electronics’ exposure to accumulated dust and gaseous contaminants. The practical concern is therefore both the cooling path and the equipment exposed to the air moving through it.

Corrosive gases can damage circuits without an obvious cooling problem
Corrosive gases can attack exposed metals even when room temperatures appear acceptable. ASHRAE’s 2011 guidance describes sulfur-bearing gases, including hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), as corrosion concerns. Corrosion can contribute to ion migration and creep corrosion across closely spaced circuit-board features, creating a path to electrical shorts. Sulfur-bearing gases can also attack silver-bearing components, forming silver sulfide and compromising package integrity.
The outcome depends on pollutant chemistry, humidity, temperature, and the materials exposed. ASHRAE’s 2020 summary of RP-1755 reports results from specific laboratory test mixtures and conditions; these findings are not a forecast for every facility:

| RP-1755 test condition | Reported finding in the study |
|---|---|
| 21°C and 50% relative humidity | Significant copper corrosion occurred only when chlorine was present in the tested gas mixture; significant silver corrosion occurred only with hydrogen sulfide. |
| 80% relative humidity | Significant copper corrosion occurred regardless of pollutant mixture in those tests. Higher humidity did not significantly increase silver corrosion thickness. |
| 28°C and 50% relative humidity | Compared with 21°C at 50% relative humidity, higher temperature reduced copper corrosion in the test conditions; significant silver corrosion remained with the hydrogen-sulfide mixture. |
These results show why “warmer means more corrosion” is not a reliable rule: the pollutant mixture and humidity matter, and different metals can respond differently.
How can operators detect contamination?
Check filters for particle loading
Inspect air-handling and equipment filters for accumulated dust and loading. ASHRAE’s 2023 Handbook identifies detailed visual inspection of air-handling filters as a way to detect airborne dust. Filter condition is useful evidence of particle burden, but it does not establish whether corrosive gases are present.

Measure corrosivity with copper and silver coupons
To assess gaseous corrosivity, expose copper and silver coupons in the data center and have a laboratory analyze the corrosion. ASHRAE’s 2023 Handbook describes about one month as a typical exposure period and recommends coupon testing at least twice a year—once in winter and once in summer. ASHRAE’s 2011 guideline suggests placing reactive monitors about 5 cm in front of a rack on its air-inlet side, at one-quarter and three-quarter frame height, or where air velocity is higher. Use the applicable test procedure and laboratory instructions for actual deployments.
A copper-coupon color-index method can be used as a screening tool to identify when more quantitative testing may be needed. It is not a substitute for laboratory analysis when corrosion levels must be confirmed. Odor or visual impressions of the room alone do not quantify corrosivity.

Which controls address particles and corrosive gases?
Control particle sources and filter the air
- Keep unpacking, uncrating, and storage of dirty equipment or boxes out of the data-center room; manage paper-dust sources and entry pathways.
- Inspect filtration systems and replace or service filters according to system requirements and observed loading.
- ASHRAE’s 2011 guideline calls for data centers to meet ISO Class 8 cleanliness. For data centers without air-side economizers, it describes continuous room-air filtration with MERV 8 filters and filtration of entering air with MERV 11 or preferably MERV 13 filters. For free-air cooling or air-side economizers, filter selection depends on site conditions. These are recommendations in the 2011 document, not universal current specifications; verify current guidance and compatibility with the air-handling system before selecting filters.
Use gas-phase filtration when measurements support it
Particulate filters capture particles; they do not provide the same treatment as gas-phase filtration for gaseous contaminants. ASHRAE’s 2011 guideline recommends gas-phase filtration of inlet air and recirculated room air when measured corrosivity exceeds its stated G1 criteria. It also describes pressurizing the room with filtered air to reduce the entry of contaminated outdoor air. RP-1755’s 2020 summary recommends action to remove highly corrosive catalyst-type pollutants using chemical filtration and advises site-selection teams to conduct extensive coupon testing or measure pollutant concentrations in and around candidate locations.
The 2011 guideline gives copper coupon reactivity below 300 Å/month and silver coupon reactivity below 200 Å/month as criteria. Treat these as thresholds from that edition, not guarantees of safety or universal limits: later ASHRAE research emphasizes pollutant-specific and humidity-dependent behavior, so decisions should account for site measurements and applicable current guidance.

The same 2011 guideline cites one implementation in which gas-phase filtration reduced measured silver corrosion from about 1,000 Å/month to below 100 Å/month. That is a reported example, not a performance promise for other facilities. Filter choice and treatment location should be evaluated against the measured contaminant, the inlet and recirculation design, economizer compatibility, and the monitoring and maintenance the system requires.
