A key that activates is not proof of authorization or a guarantee of lasting access: publishers may later ban or revoke keys they determine were obtained improperly. Check the seller, the exact listing and its refund terms before paying.
Check the publisher’s approved-retailer information
First identify the game’s publisher, then use the publisher’s own website to find its current retailer guidance. Prefer the publisher’s store or a seller the publisher names as approved. Ubisoft, for example, recommends buying its games and content from the Ubisoft Store or an approved retailer.
Verify the retailer itself, and check for any title- or region-specific qualification. Retailer lists and commercial arrangements can change, so an old listing, a seller’s logo, or its own claim that it is “official” is not independent confirmation. If the publisher does not provide a clear current listing for the seller, treat authorization as unverified rather than assuming approval.
Match the listing to the game you need
Before checkout, confirm the exact game and edition, the activation platform or launcher, the region, and any stated restrictions. A key for the right game may still be unusable if it is intended for another platform or region.

- Game and edition: Check the full title and edition, including any included content or upgrade restrictions.
- Platform: Confirm the key activates on the launcher or service you use. A PC key is not necessarily a Steam key.
- Region: Look for region locks or limitations on where the key can be activated.
- Delivery and terms: Read how the code will be delivered and any conditions attached to the listing.
Steam warns that keys offered in player-to-player trades can be for a different game, fake, already used, or region restricted. That warning concerns community trading; it does not establish how common those problems are at commercial stores or label every third-party retailer unsafe. See Steam’s recommended trading practices.
Understand the difference between activation and lasting validity
Successful redemption answers only whether the platform accepted the key at that moment. It does not establish where the key came from, whether the seller was authorized, or whether the publisher will continue to honor it. Steam says a publisher may revoke a key if it determines the key was obtained fraudulently; the game is removed from the account, but Steam says the account itself is not restricted in this revoked-key situation. Ubisoft likewise warns that codes acquired through an irregular process, such as from an unapproved retailer, may be banned.

Neither successful activation nor a seller’s assurances remove this provenance risk. The official guidance cited here does not provide a prevalence rate for banned or revoked keys, so it cannot establish how often this happens.
Check who will help if something goes wrong
Read the seller’s written refund and replacement policy before paying. For an external purchase, the platform may not be able to refund you: Steam says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam and suggests contacting the third-party seller. Ubisoft also directs buyers whose code has been banned to the retailer for a replacement or refund. Keep the order confirmation and the listing terms so you can show what was offered.

If a key is rejected, banned, or later revoked, contact the seller promptly, provide the order details and request the remedy promised in its terms. Do not assume that contacting the platform will resolve a purchase made elsewhere.

- Does the publisher currently identify the retailer as approved?
- Does the listing clearly match your game, edition, platform and region?
- Are refund or replacement terms written down and understandable?
- What is the total price, including any charges shown at checkout?
The official guidance cited here sets no universal price cutoff or cross-publisher seller-rating standard. A lower price alone does not establish that a seller is illegitimate, just as a polished storefront does not establish authorization. Microsoft’s advice about counterfeit or previously used software keys is specific to Microsoft software, not game-key retailers, so it should not be treated as game-specific evidence.
