If T-Mobile service stops working abroad, first check that your destination and phone are eligible, then troubleshoot based on what is failing: network registration, calls or texts, or data. For a signal problem, try each available roaming partner manually, restart the phone, and check for a roaming block on your line. Data problems need separate checks for roaming settings, destination restrictions, VPN, and usage limits.

Start with the checks that apply to any roaming problem

  1. Confirm destination and device eligibility. Check T-Mobile’s international roaming information for your destination and plan, and confirm your handset is compatible. Included destinations and plan terms can change; do not assume a country is covered because a nearby country is.
  2. Make sure Airplane mode is off. If you are troubleshooting data, T-Mobile says to dial #RON# (#766#) to check that data roaming is turned on, where applicable.
  3. Manually select a roaming network. In your phone’s cellular or mobile-network settings, turn off automatic network selection and try each T-Mobile roaming partner shown for that country. T-Mobile says to try all available partners at least three times. Menu labels vary by device; use the handset’s current tutorial or user guide for the exact path.
  4. Restart the phone. Turn it off, wait about 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
  5. Check the line for a roaming block. Account-level restrictions can prevent roaming even when the phone and destination are otherwise eligible.

These are T-Mobile’s published troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee that a partner network is available or that a local network outage can be fixed immediately. See T-Mobile’s international service troubleshooting page for its current guidance.

If there is no signal or the phone will not register

Begin with destination and device eligibility, then work through Airplane mode, manual network selection, and a restart. If the phone still shows no service or a roaming error, check whether roaming is blocked on the line. Avoid repeatedly changing unrelated settings: failure to register is different from a data-only problem, and an APN change will not by itself make an unsupported destination or unavailable partner network work.

If calls or text messages fail

Check how the number is dialed

Verify the number and use the international dialing format required for the number you are calling. If an automated message gives you a two-digit number, T-Mobile says to enter that number to complete the call.

Check whether Wi-Fi Calling is involved

If the phone is connected to Wi-Fi and using Wi-Fi Calling, troubleshoot that connection separately. T-Mobile warns that a call may switch to cellular if Wi-Fi drops or you move out of range, which can lead to unexpected charges abroad. Check that the Wi-Fi Calling icon is present. On supported devices, you can choose Wi-Fi-only calling or turn on Airplane mode and then re-enable Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Calling; available options differ by handset.

Contact T-Mobile if the issue remains

T-Mobile lists international roaming care at +1-505-998-3793, which can be called from another line. If your T-Mobile phone cannot place calls, use Wi-Fi messaging or another available phone to contact support. The carrier also lists messaging and social contact options on its international roaming troubleshooting page.

If calls or texts work but mobile data does not

Work through data-specific causes rather than assuming the phone has no roaming service:

  • Check data roaming. Confirm the data-roaming setting is enabled and that roaming is available under your plan for the destination. T-Mobile notes that data roaming may be disabled in some locations, with cruise ships given as an example.
  • Look for a usage-limit alert. T-Mobile may send a text when you reach the high-speed international data limit. A limit-related slowdown is different from data that never connects.
  • Review APN and data settings carefully. T-Mobile’s official BYOD data and APN instructions list fast.t-mobile.com for LTE devices and epc.tmobile.com for non-LTE devices. They specify IPv4/IPv6 as the APN protocol and IPv4/IPv6 or IPv4-only as the international roaming protocol. These settings can depend on the device and its current configuration, so check T-Mobile’s current instructions and your phone’s setup before editing them.
  • Temporarily turn off a VPN. Disable VPN settings or apps briefly to see whether they are interfering with the connection, then restore the VPN if it is not the cause.
  • Escalate if data still fails. Contact T-Mobile after checking eligibility, roaming, settings, and any usage alert; support can help review the line, but cannot guarantee local partner availability.

If data is connected but unusually slow

T-Mobile says international data speeds are reduced to 256 kbps until the next bill cycle after the high-speed international data limit is reached. That explanation applies to reaching the limit; it does not explain no signal or a failure to register on a roaming network. T-Mobile points customers to International Pass for more high-speed international data. Check your plan and the carrier’s current pass terms for eligibility and details before purchasing.

If you are worried about roaming charges or usage reports

Check that the destination and your plan’s roaming terms match your travel, and ask T-Mobile whether the line has a roaming block if you want to prevent roaming access. Remember that Wi-Fi Calling can fall back to cellular when Wi-Fi disconnects. T-Mobile says roaming data and text usage details may take up to 30 days to appear, so an account display may not show recent use immediately.
