DDR4 and DDR5 are different memory generations, and they are not interchangeable: your motherboard’s memory slots determine which type you can install. Choose RAM only after checking that the exact motherboard and processor support it. DDR5 supports higher stated data rates on compatible platforms, but that alone does not guarantee a noticeable speed boost in every application.
Will DDR5 work in a DDR4 motherboard?
No. A DDR5 module is not compatible with a DDR4 motherboard, and a DDR4 module will not work in a DDR5 motherboard. The generations use different DIMM designs and electrical specifications; a faster rated speed cannot overcome a physical or platform mismatch. Check the memory type listed for your exact motherboard model and revision in its manual or specifications.
The processor matters too. A CPU may support one memory generation or, on some platforms, offer support for more than one. But the motherboard still has a specific slot type. Intel’s 12th-generation desktop processors, for example, are specified for DDR5-4800 or DDR4-3200; those figures apply to that processor generation, not to all CPUs. Intel’s 12th-generation desktop compatibility guidance explains the distinction.
How to check RAM compatibility before buying
- Identify the exact motherboard. Record its model and revision, then check its specifications or manual to see whether it takes DDR4 or DDR5.
- Confirm the form factor. Desktop boards generally use DIMMs; laptops generally use SO-DIMMs. The module must match both the memory generation and the form factor.
- Check the processor specifications. Look up the CPU’s supported memory type, maximum capacity, speed and channel information. Intel’s processor memory guidance recommends checking the processor specifications and verifying a specific memory brand and model with the motherboard vendor.
- Choose capacity and module count. Follow the board’s supported configurations and slot order. Check its memory compatibility list for the kit, particularly if you plan to install several modules or use a rated profile speed.
- Verify the rated speed in context. A kit’s advertised speed is not automatically guaranteed on every CPU and board. Check the platform limits and the motherboard’s guidance for the exact configuration.
What do DDR4 and DDR5 speed numbers mean?
DDR5 can operate at higher data rates than DDR4 on a compatible platform, but the generation label or headline speed does not tell you how much faster a particular PC or application will be. Intel’s 12th-generation desktop specification provides one concrete comparison: DDR5-4800 and DDR4-3200. These are platform-specific supported rates, not universal limits or a promise that a particular high-speed kit will run at its advertised profile.

Actual results depend on the CPU and its memory controller, memory speed and timings, motherboard and firmware, number of modules, and the workload. Kingston’s overview discusses platform support and module population considerations; Kingston’s DDR4 and DDR5 comparison is useful background, but it does not make a higher nominal rate a universal application-performance guarantee.
Is DDR5 faster enough to be worth it?
There is no universal percentage by which DDR5 makes a computer faster. A comparison is meaningful only when you consider the platform and the applications being tested. Reviews should use the same or comparable CPU, capacity and module count; report memory timings; identify the game or application; and describe a repeatable method. One test of a particular Alder Lake system cannot establish how every current DDR5 kit compares with every DDR4 kit. Tom’s Hardware’s DDR5-versus-DDR4 article describes a specific test platform and settings, so treat its results as configuration-specific.

DDR4 or DDR5: which should you choose?
Keep or choose DDR4
Keep DDR4 if your existing motherboard supports it and you want to expand or replace memory without changing platforms. DDR4 can also suit a new build when the selected CPU and motherboard use DDR4 and the compatible components fit your needs. Verify the exact kit against the board and processor rather than relying on the generation name alone.
Choose DDR5
Choose DDR5 when both the motherboard and processor support it and you are buying memory for that platform. Check supported capacity, speed, module arrangement and the board’s compatibility list before purchasing.

Building a new PC
Choose the CPU and motherboard platform first, then buy memory that matches the board. Some processor families include platform variants or support more than one memory generation, but a particular motherboard has one memory-slot type. If a workload makes memory performance a deciding factor, compare benchmarks for that workload and platform instead of assuming DDR5’s nominal data rate predicts the result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to install and configure multiple DIMMs
Use the motherboard manual for the required slots and population rules; the right arrangement depends on the board. For 600-series motherboards supporting 12th-generation Intel Core processors, Intel’s installation guidance recommends identical DIMM part numbers in a two-DIMMs-per-channel arrangement to reach targeted memory speed. That advice is specific to that platform, not a universal rule for all systems. See Intel’s 600-series memory installation guidance and follow the instructions for your exact board.

Quick decision checklist
- Does the motherboard accept DDR4 or DDR5, and is the module the right DIMM or SO-DIMM form factor?
- Does the exact CPU support that memory type, capacity and speed?
- Does the selected capacity and number of modules follow the board’s slot and configuration guidance?
- Is the specific kit listed as compatible, especially if using several DIMMs or a rated profile speed?
- If performance is the deciding factor, do benchmarks match your CPU, configuration and applications?
