Usually, yes—if your speaker’s manufacturer allows playback while it is connected to power. It may charge more slowly while playing, and loud listening can use more power than the charger supplies, so the battery may still drain. Check the instructions for your exact model before using it this way.
Why charging and playback can happen at the same time
Some portable speakers can operate while connected to a charger. For example, Sony documents this for the SRS-XB41, and Xiaomi says the Mi Bluetooth Speaker Basic 2 can be used while charging. That does not make simultaneous use a universal feature: follow the manual for your speaker.

What to expect while the speaker is playing
Charging may take longer
Power is being used for playback as well as battery charging, so charging can take longer than when the speaker is off. Sony’s support guidance says, “Charging may take longer to complete if you’re using the speaker while charging.” Sony USA charging support recommends turning the speaker off while charging when faster charging is the priority.

Loud playback can still drain the battery
If the speaker is playing loudly, it may use more power than the charger provides. Sony warns that the battery charge can decrease in this situation even when the speaker is connected to an outlet. Lowering the volume can help reduce power use. Sony SRS-XB41 Help Guide
Check the charger and conditions for your model
Before charging during playback, check the official manual or support page for your speaker’s required cable, supported adapter, and any limits on use while charging. These requirements vary by model. Sony notes that some speakers cannot be charged with a USB cable intended only for charging, and its general guidance for applicable products recommends a USB AC adapter rated at 1.5 A or more. For the Sony SRS-XB41 and SRS-XG300, the reviewed Help Guides specify an operating and charging temperature range of 5–35 °C (41–95 °F), and caution against charging where water may splash onto the speaker. How to decide for your speaker
- Find your exact model’s official manual or support page.
- Confirm it permits operation while connected to power, and check the specified cable and adapter.
- If you use it while charging, keep the volume moderate and expect charging to take longer.
- If the battery still falls or you want the quickest charge, turn the speaker off and charge it under the manual’s stated conditions.
