Before paying for a game key, confirm the exact game and edition, the platform where it activates, whether it works in your country, and what the seller will do if it is invalid or later revoked. Do not assume Steam will refund a key bought elsewhere: Steam says third-party CD keys are outside its Store refund process.
Check the platform and exact edition
A key is not necessarily a code you can redeem in any launcher. Check the listing for the specific platform or client it activates on, then compare the game title and edition with what you intend to buy. Editions can differ in included content, so do not rely on artwork or a short product name alone.

Steam Support distinguishes Steam keys from keys used with third-party clients or services. Its Region Restrictions on Steam page also advises buyers to ask the retailer about a key’s restrictions before purchasing.
Verify the country where the key can activate
A label such as “global” or a generic region name is not enough to establish that a key will activate where you live. Steam says CD-key restrictions vary by publisher and that there is no universal rule. Ask the seller whether the exact key can be activated in your country, and keep the answer in writing.

Check activation eligibility separately from where you will play: the important question is whether the code can be redeemed in your account’s country. If the seller cannot clearly identify the eligible countries, treat that as unresolved rather than assuming the listing applies to you.
Assess the seller’s source and support route
Price alone does not tell you how a key was sourced or what help you can expect. Steamworks documentation describes how developers request Steam keys for distribution and how Valve reviews requests; it is not a current directory of authorized retailers for each game. For a particular listing, ask the publisher or retailer for game-specific sourcing information and check any current guidance the publisher provides.

Before checkout, identify who handles problems and how to reach them. The practical support route for a third-party key is generally the seller, not Steam Support. Save the listing, the seller’s answers, the order confirmation, and receipt so you can show what was offered and purchased.
Read the refund terms for key failures
Steam’s standard Store policy says games are generally eligible for a refund request within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Those thresholds apply to purchases through Steam; Valve says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, including CD keys bought from third parties. Steam Support likewise says it cannot refund third-party CD keys.

Read the seller’s policy before paying. Look specifically for whether it covers a key that is invalid, already used, for the wrong game, region-restricted, or revoked after redemption; whether the key must remain unused; and how quickly you must report a problem. A policy that only covers unused codes may not help if a problem becomes apparent when you try to activate one.
Understand invalid, used, or revoked keys
A code may fail because it is invalid, has already been used, belongs to another game, or is restricted in your region. Steam’s scam guidance warns that CD keys offered in certain trades may be for a different game, fake, used, or region-restricted. These warnings do not establish that a particular shop is unreliable, but they explain why checking the listing and the seller’s terms matters.

A key can also be revoked after purchase. Steam says a revoked key was revoked by the game’s publisher and directs buyers who purchased from a third-party site to seek a refund from that seller. Preserve your order evidence and contact the seller promptly if this happens.

What to do if the key does not work
- Check the redemption details. Confirm that you are using the launcher named in the listing and that the code matches the listed game and edition.
- Capture the problem. Keep the error message, order confirmation, listing, and any seller statements about platform, region, or refunds.
- Contact the seller. Explain the failure and request the remedy allowed by its written terms. Steam directs buyers of third-party keys to the seller for refunds, including when a publisher revokes a key.
- Use Steam Support only for Steam-side questions. Steam’s refund policy does not make Valve responsible for a purchase made from an outside seller.
