To get more unplugged time from a large-screen Windows 2-in-1, start with the display and idle settings: lower brightness to a comfortable level, reduce the refresh rate if you can accept less-smooth motion, and shorten the time before the screen turns off. In Windows 11, also try Energy saver or Best power efficiency, then check which apps are using battery in the background. If runtime remains poor, use Windows’ battery report to distinguish settings-related drain from a worn battery.
The exact controls vary by model, Windows version, display, and manufacturer. These steps focus on Windows 11; a setting may be unavailable on some PCs.
Which Windows settings should you change first?
Begin with Windows’ recommendations, then make changes that fit your work. Microsoft’s Power settings in Windows 11 explains the available controls and notes that some depend on the PC.
- Review recommendations: Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations. Apply only the suggestions that suit your needs.
- Choose an efficient power mode: Under Power & battery, set Power mode to Best power efficiency when conserving charge matters more than peak performance. Use Balanced for mixed workloads, or Best performance when speed is more important than runtime. If the choices are missing, your PC or its power plan may not expose them.
- Use Energy saver when useful: Turn it on when you need to conserve charge. It can dim the display and limit background activity, which may affect how apps behave.
Power modes are a trade-off, not a battery fix: demanding work can still use substantial power even in an efficient mode. Microsoft’s Change the power mode for your Windows PC describes these options and their availability limits.

How can display settings extend runtime?
Lower brightness without making the screen hard to read
Use the brightness control in Windows or the device’s keyboard controls to find a comfortable lower level. A large panel can be a significant part of a 2-in-1’s power use, but there is no single brightness percentage that suits every room or display. Consider a lower refresh rate
If the display offers more than one refresh rate, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and choose a lower rate if it is acceptable for your work. Microsoft Support notes, “A higher refresh rate will provide smoother motion on your display, but it also uses more power.” Lower rates can make scrolling and animation look less fluid; the option may not appear on every device. Use dark mode selectively
A dark theme may help reduce display power on an OLED panel. Do not assume the same benefit on other display technologies; the effect depends on the panel. Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guidance describes dark mode as a possible battery-saving option for OLED displays.
How should you set screen-off and sleep timers?
Shorten the time the display stays on when the 2-in-1 is idle. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts and adjust the on-battery screen-off and sleep intervals. Choose intervals that fit how you use the device: a short screen timeout saves power when you step away, but can be disruptive while reading or presenting. How do you find apps draining the battery?
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage and look for apps with unexpectedly high use, especially background use. If Windows and the app provide a control to limit background activity, use it for apps that do not need to keep working when you are away. Do not disable background activity indiscriminately: messaging, sync, and other apps may stop updating as expected. For video and graphics-heavy work
For video playback, choose Optimize for battery life in the battery options when available; you can also enable lower video resolution on battery. For demanding apps, select a power-saving graphics option if Windows or the app provides one and performance remains adequate. These controls can affect picture quality or responsiveness, so use them only when the trade-off works for the task.

When should you turn off wireless connections?
Turn on Airplane mode only when you do not need network connections. If you still need some connectivity, switch off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth individually when those radios are unused. This can reduce power use, but disconnecting a radio can interrupt downloads, accessories, or network access. Microsoft lists these options in Battery saving tips for Windows and Power settings in Windows 11.

If the battery drains while the device is idle, compare these states on your own 2-in-1. Check Settings > System > Power & battery for the available timeout choices; Windows may also expose Hibernate through the power menu or power-button settings. How can you tell whether the battery is worn?
Runtime settings cannot restore capacity lost as a battery ages. Microsoft says lithium-ion batteries deteriorate over time and with use. To inspect battery information in Windows, open an Administrator: Command Prompt, run:
powercfg /batteryreport
Windows generates an HTML report. Review the Installed battery, Recent usage, Battery usage, and estimated-capacity information. The report can help distinguish recent usage patterns from signs of capacity decline, but it does not predict a guaranteed number of hours for your next charge. If the capacity information suggests deterioration or the device’s runtime has sharply declined, contact the manufacturer about service for your specific model.
Microsoft’s Caring for your battery in Windows also recommends, when practical, keeping charge between 20% and 80% several times a week, avoiding high temperatures during use or charging, and storing a device around 40%–60% in a cool, dry place for long-term storage. These are battery-health practices, not immediate runtime boosters. If the battery visibly expands, stop using the device immediately.
Why might the battery stop charging below 100%?
Some manufacturers provide Smart charging, which may intentionally hold charge below 100% while the device remains plugged in to help preserve battery health. Its behavior and controls are manufacturer-specific. Leave it enabled when you do not need a full charge soon; when you need the additional capacity for travel or a long unplugged session, follow the device maker’s instructions for charging to full. Microsoft describes this behavior in Use Smart charging in Windows.
