To compare phone screen resolution fairly, look at the exact model, its pixel dimensions and diagonal size, and its pixels per inch (PPI). Pixel dimensions tell you how many pixels make up the display; PPI puts pixel density in the context of screen size. Neither number alone tells you which screen will look better.

What resolution and PPI tell you

Pixel dimensions describe the grid

A resolution such as 1080 × 2424 describes the display’s pixel grid: the number of pixels in each dimension. A higher pixel count can mean more detail, but it does not automatically mean a sharper-looking phone screen because displays also differ in physical size.

PPI adds screen-size context

PPI means pixels per inch. It is a measure of pixel density, so it helps compare displays of different sizes. When manufacturers publish both pixel dimensions and PPI, use both figures. PPI is useful for comparing density, but it is not a complete measure of visual quality or a guarantee that a difference will be noticeable.

Compare exact models, not brand families

“Pixel,” “Galaxy,” and “iPhone” each refer to many models with different screens. These examples use Google Pixel 10 models, Samsung’s 2025 Galaxy S25 family U.S. business specifications, and Apple iPhone 17 specifications. They illustrate how to read the figures; they are not a synchronized, latest-generation ranking.

Model and specification source Diagonal Resolution detail PPI Refresh-rate detail
Google Pixel 10 — Google specifications 6.3 in 1080 × 2424 OLED 422 60–120 Hz
Google Pixel 10 Pro XL — Google specifications 6.8 in 1344 × 2992 LTPO OLED 486 1–120 Hz
Samsung Galaxy S25 — Samsung 2025 U.S. business spec sheet 6.2 in FHD+ Not stated on the cited sheet 120 Hz adaptive
Samsung Galaxy S25+ — Samsung 2025 U.S. business spec sheet 6.7 in QHD+ Not stated on the cited sheet 120 Hz adaptive
Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra — Samsung 2025 U.S. business spec sheet 6.9 in QHD+ Not stated on the cited sheet 120 Hz adaptive
Apple iPhone 17 — Apple specifications 6.3 in 2622 × 1206 OLED 460 Adaptive, up to 120 Hz

Google lists pixel dimensions and PPI for the Pixel examples, and Apple does so for iPhone 17. Samsung’s cited sheet reports FHD+ for Galaxy S25 and QHD+ for S25+ and S25 Ultra, but does not give exact pixel dimensions or PPI. Those labels are Samsung’s stated resolution classes; this comparison does not infer additional values from them.

What FHD+ and QHD+ mean on a Galaxy

FHD+ and QHD+ are Samsung’s resolution-class labels in the cited Galaxy S25 specifications. The sheet assigns FHD+ to the 6.2-inch Galaxy S25 and QHD+ to the 6.7-inch S25+ and 6.9-inch S25 Ultra. Because that source does not provide exact pixel dimensions or PPI, the labels support a class-level comparison—not a precise cross-brand density calculation.

Does higher resolution look sharper on a phone?

Not necessarily. Resolution and PPI describe pixel detail and density, but manufacturer specifications alone cannot establish how noticeable a difference will be to a particular viewer. Screen size, viewing conditions, content, panel characteristics and other display behavior matter too. The cited specifications do not include an independent user-perception study or a controlled visual comparison, so they cannot support a claim that one of these phones looks sharper in practice.

Keep refresh rate and brightness separate

Refresh rate affects motion, not resolution

Refresh rate describes how often the display can update, not how many pixels it has. In these specifications, Google lists 60–120 Hz for Pixel 10 and 1–120 Hz for Pixel 10 Pro XL; Samsung lists 120 Hz adaptive for the S25 family; and Apple lists adaptive refresh up to 120 Hz for iPhone 17. These are manufacturer specifications, not a controlled comparison of how smooth the screens look in use.

Brightness figures depend on their conditions

Brightness numbers are not interchangeable unless their measurement conditions match. Google lists HDR and peak brightness separately for the Pixel examples. Apple specifies iPhone 17 at 1,000 nits typical maximum, 1,600 nits HDR peak, and 3,000 nits outdoor peak. Those distinct Apple figures describe different conditions; they should not be treated as one universal brightness rating or a head-to-head result against Google’s figures.

A practical way to compare two phones

  1. Identify the exact generation and model. Find the manufacturer’s specification page for each phone; a family name alone is not enough.
  2. Record screen size and resolution together. Use pixel dimensions and PPI when both are published. If a manufacturer gives only a label such as FHD+ or QHD+, keep the comparison at that level.
  3. Compare PPI as a density measure. Treat it as useful context, not a verdict on perceived quality or a promise that a difference will be visible.
  4. Assess other display specifications separately. Check panel type, refresh-rate range and brightness figures, preserving any conditions attached to brightness.
  5. Use current regional specifications. Specifications can vary by model and market. The Galaxy figures here come from Samsung’s U.S. business sheet for the 2025 S25 family, so verify the official listing for the exact model and market you are considering.

For the official figures in this comparison, see Google’s Pixel phone hardware tech specs, Samsung’s Galaxy S25 series B2B spec sheet, and Apple’s iPhone 17 technical specifications.
