To improve a Bluetooth speaker’s sound, first try moving it, then adjust EQ from a neutral baseline. Keep the sound path clear, listen from where you normally sit, and change one thing at a time. Wall and corner placement can affect bass, but there is no single distance or EQ curve that works for every speaker and room.
1. Check the speaker’s position before changing settings
Start from the place where you actually listen. Make sure the speaker is stable and its output is not blocked by furniture, a shelf edge, or other objects. Play a familiar track at a normal listening level and note whether the bass is boomy, thin, or balanced and whether vocals and details are clear.
Try a few nearby locations, moving the speaker in small increments and changing one placement variable at a time. A nearby wall or corner can reinforce low frequencies; if the bass is excessive, try moving the speaker farther from that boundary. If bass sounds weak, try moving it closer. These are listening tests, not guaranteed fixes: the result varies with the room and speaker. Cambridge Audio explains how room surfaces affect its supported room-correction systems, while Bose offers similar placement troubleshooting for the SoundLink Mini, a product sold from 2013 to 2015. Use the listening position as your reference
Judge each location from the spot where you intend to hear the speaker, not only from beside it. For a single portable speaker, prioritize a clear sound path, balanced bass, clarity, and a stable position. Stereo-pair advice about symmetrical spacing or forming a listening triangle is for two-speaker setups, not a requirement for one all-in-one unit; see Klipsch’s general stereo-speaker guidance for that different case.

2. Reset EQ and other sound processing
Before trying to correct the sound with tone controls, set EQ on the phone, computer, or playback app to flat or off. Temporarily disable overlapping effects such as loudness, bass boost, spatial processing, compression, or reverb if available. Multiple processing layers can make it harder to identify what is changing the sound.
Listen again to the same familiar audio at the same volume. If the sound is still unbalanced, make small bass or treble adjustments, one control at a time, and compare each change from your listening position. Avoid extreme boosts: Bose warns that extreme bass and treble settings may harm sound quality. There is no supported universal graphic-EQ curve for all Bluetooth speakers, so do not assume a preset will suit your model or room. If you are playing from a Windows computer
Bluetooth may connect using a hands-free headset profile intended for calls rather than full-range music playback. Bose’s support guidance for the SoundLink Home says to use the Stereo/A2DP entry rather than Hands-Free/HSP for full-range audio. The exact labels and settings can vary by Windows version and device, so check the current Bluetooth sound-output choices for your computer and speaker. This is a model-specific support example, not a setting that applies to every speaker. Bose’s SoundLink Home sound-quality guidance describes the distinction.
3. Check for speaker-specific presets or calibration
Some models offer placement presets or automatic calibration, but their controls and supported positions are product-specific. Check the manual or the manufacturer’s app for your exact model rather than borrowing settings from another speaker. Bang & Olufsen lists placement-related sound settings for supported Beosound models in its placement-settings instructions.

Harman Kardon’s Onyx Studio 8 is one specific example: its support page says it automatically calibrates when powered on and music begins, and recommends placing that model at least 0.5 m from walls. That distance is for the Onyx Studio 8; it is not a general rule for Bluetooth speakers. If you move a speaker with a placement preset or calibration feature, follow its instructions for updating or rerunning the setting. Harman Kardon’s Onyx Studio 8 guidance explains its behavior.

- Choose a reference: Pick a familiar track with vocals and a range of low and high sounds, then listen at your usual volume.
- Test placement: Move the speaker a small distance, changing only its position. Compare from the normal listening spot.
- Set a clean baseline: Turn source and app EQ off or flat and disable extra effects while troubleshooting.
- Adjust cautiously: If needed, make one modest bass or treble change, then listen again before changing anything else.
- Check the exact model: Consult its manual or app for any placement mode or calibration procedure, and apply it after moving the speaker if instructed.
A stand may help when you need to raise or aim a speaker, but the cited Harman Audio advice concerns monitors rather than portable Bluetooth speakers. Before using any stand, check the speaker’s manual for supported orientation and ensure the setup is stable. Harman Audio’s monitor-placement article is not a universal stand recommendation.
