Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore buying a detachable Windows laptop, price the complete setup—including any keyboard and pen you need—then confirm that its processor runs your required apps and peripherals. Also assess memory, storage, typing comfort, screen, ports, connectivity, battery evidence, repair options, and Windows support. A detachable is tablet-first: its screen separates from the keyboard and typically uses a kickstand on its own. That works well if you regularly use the screen as a tablet, but makes the keyboard arrangement and full accessory cost especially important.
Does a detachable laptop make sense for your work?
A detachable lets you remove the screen from its keyboard, rather than folding the keyboard behind the display as a 360-degree convertible does. The screen can be useful on its own for handwriting, reading, or carrying a lighter tablet, while the keyboard can make it a laptop for typing. When comparing form factors, focus on how often you will actually use the screen separately: if you mostly type, a convertible that keeps its keyboard attached may be a better fit. Neither design is universally superior; the right choice depends on how you use the device.
For a main computer, consider not just whether it runs your apps, but whether the keyboard, trackpad, stand, and ports work for your usual desk and lap setup. Those practical trade-offs are worth trying in person where possible; manufacturer specifications do not establish comfort or lap stability.
What should you check before buying?
1. The complete price and what comes in the box
Check the exact configuration and retailer listing for the keyboard, pen, charger, and any business options you need. A headline device price may not include the accessories required to use it as your everyday laptop. Microsoft’s September 23, 2026 announcement for a newer 12-inch Surface Pro says the Surface Keyboard and Slim Pen are sold separately (Microsoft Devices Blog). The announcement states a $1,149.99 MSRP and select-market availability beginning October 13, 2026; as of October 7, that is announced pricing and future availability, not proof of a current local retail offer. Confirm the actual SKU, bundle, and regional price before comparing totals.

For historical context, Microsoft listed a $799 starting price for the first-edition 12-inch Surface Pro in 2025 (Microsoft Surface Pro 12-inch, 2025). That was a launch price, not a verified current price.
2. Processor platform and app compatibility
Do not assume every Windows app, driver, peripheral, or workplace management tool behaves the same on every processor platform. Microsoft’s Surface Pro 11th Edition configurations include Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite for consumer devices and Intel Core Ultra options for business (Microsoft Surface Pro 11th Edition). Before choosing a configuration, check the publisher’s support information for each essential app and accessory, including any specialist hardware or corporate tools you rely on. Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ explains the platform at a general level; it cannot confirm compatibility for every specific program.
3. Memory and storage capacity
Choose RAM and storage for your actual workload rather than the lowest-priced configuration. Consider how many demanding applications you keep open, the size of local files, and whether you can rely on cloud storage. Check whether the particular model allows later upgrades or service: Microsoft’s repair listing identifies a removable SSD for Surface Pro 11th Edition and the first-edition 12-inch model (Microsoft Surface repairability).

Some advertised Copilot+ features are limited to select configurations with at least 16 GB of RAM and may also depend on other system conditions, according to Microsoft’s Surface comparison information (Microsoft Surface device comparison). Check the requirements for the feature you want rather than treating the label as a guarantee that every configuration supports every feature.
4. Keyboard, trackpad, kickstand, and pen use
If the detachable will be your main computer, test the keyboard and trackpad if you can. Check key layout, backlighting, trackpad behavior, and whether the kickstand gives you a usable angle at your usual desk. Think about lap use as well as desk use: the screen-and-kickstand arrangement may feel different from a conventional laptop base.
For handwriting, check where the pen is stored and whether its charging arrangement suits you. Microsoft describes the 2025 12-inch Surface Pro keyboard as full-size and backlit, with magnetic pen storage (Microsoft Surface Pro 12-inch, 2025). Those are product descriptions, not independent measurements of typing comfort or pen performance.

5. Screen, ports, Wi-Fi, and mobile connectivity
Compare screen size, resolution, brightness, aspect ratio, touch and pen behavior, and the ports you need for monitors, storage, or other equipment. Also check Wi-Fi specifications and whether the exact configuration includes mobile broadband. Microsoft’s September 2026 announcement lists a 500-nit PixelSense touchscreen for the newer 12-inch Surface Pro and an optional 5G configuration for business (Microsoft Devices Blog). Verify that the feature is available on the specific SKU and in your market; an optional feature is not standard on every configuration.
6. Battery evidence, not just a headline claim
Battery life depends on configuration, workload, network and feature settings, signal strength, and other conditions. Compare test methods and independent reviews where available rather than treating a manufacturer’s figure as a promise for your day. Microsoft’s published 2026 Surface Pro web-browsing test used a preproduction device with 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, visited twelve popular websites over Wi-Fi, and set brightness to 150 nits (Microsoft Surface device comparison). That is a defined test scenario, not a guarantee for different configurations or workloads.

Look up the repair guide for the exact model and check what parts can be replaced, what service is offered, and whether it is available where you live. Microsoft lists the battery, display module, kickstand, motherboard, and removable SSD among parts for Surface Pro 11th Edition; its list for the first-edition 12-inch model includes the battery and display module (Microsoft Surface repairability). Microsoft cautions that parts and service availability can vary by product, market, and time. Its Surface service guides provide model-specific information to consult before purchase.

8. Windows eligibility and support for used devices
If you are considering an older or refurbished detachable, check that the exact model meets Windows 11 requirements and review its support status before paying. Microsoft says free Windows 10 updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025, and identifies some older Surface devices that cannot meet Windows 11 requirements (Microsoft: Windows 10 support ended). Do not assume an older device can be upgraded simply because it runs Windows today.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you compare actual models?
Use the same checklist for each device and compare the full configuration, not just the tablet price or processor name.
- Platform: processor type and confirmed support for your essential apps, drivers, and peripherals.
- Full setup cost: device plus the keyboard, pen, charger, or business option you need.
- Tablet experience: screen size and weight, and how often you expect to use the display detached.
- Laptop experience: keyboard and trackpad feel, stand usability, and how the setup works on your lap.
- Connections: ports, Wi-Fi, and whether the specific SKU offers mobile broadband.
- Battery evidence: test conditions and independent results that resemble your own use.
- Long-term ownership: warranty, repair options, Windows eligibility, and support status.
Product specifications can narrow the choices, but they do not establish which detachable has the best keyboard, battery endurance, or overall value. For those comparisons, look for current, model-specific independent testing and verify that the tested configuration matches the one you intend to buy.

What do current Surface examples show?
Surface Pro examples illustrate why configuration and date matter, but they do not establish a ranking across detachable Windows laptops. Microsoft announced a newer 12-inch Surface Pro on September 23, 2026, with select-market availability stated to begin October 13, after the date of this article. Its announcement describes a 500-nit touchscreen, optional business 5G, and separately sold keyboard and pen. Check local availability and the exact configuration before treating those features or the announced MSRP as a purchase offer.
Microsoft’s 2025 first-edition 12-inch model page described a 1.5-pound device and a full-size backlit keyboard with magnetic pen storage. Its stated $799 starting price was a launch figure, not current verified pricing. Product details and bundles can change by model, market, and date, so confirm the listing for the specific device you are considering.
