Before submitting an iPhone app, make sure the build is complete, reviewers can reach every important feature, the App Store listing and disclosures are finished, and you have explicitly submitted the review draft in App Store Connect. The checklist below follows that sequence and distinguishes preparing a draft from actually sending it to Apple.

1. Finish the app and test its critical journeys

Submit a version that is complete and ready to distribute. Apple identifies crashes, bugs, placeholder content, and missing information as common completeness problems; it advises testing on devices running the latest software and fixing issues before submission. See Apple’s App Review guidance.

  • Exercise the main user journeys from start to finish, including sign-in, purchases or subscriptions, account changes, and any hardware-dependent features.
  • Remove unfinished screens, placeholder text, and sample content that could be mistaken for real production content. Check for broken links and flows that leave the user stuck.
  • Test every in-app link. Keep the privacy-policy and user-support links current and working; Apple’s review guidance says both are required.
  • Check permission prompts and purpose strings against what the app actually does. Explain clearly why the app requests access to data, and provide user-facing purpose strings when the app references APIs that access sensitive user data.

Account for hardware-dependent features

If a reviewer cannot exercise a core feature without special hardware or a hard-to-reproduce environment, explain how it works and provide a way to inspect it. Apple’s complete-review guidance may require hardware or a demonstration video. For required hardware, the video should show the app running on a physical Apple device as it pairs and interacts with that hardware. See Apple’s App Review guidance and Submit an app for review.

2. Give App Review the access and context it needs

Use the App Review Information section in App Store Connect to explain how to evaluate the app. Notes should be concise but specific enough for a reviewer to reach and understand its important features. Apple’s instructions are in Provide app review information.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
  • Explain the app. For a new app, describe its concept and business model. For an update, identify what changed and where reviewers can find significant new features or content.
  • Describe its audience and operation. State the purpose and target audience, the device models and operating-system versions you tested, and any external services or platforms that provide core functionality, such as data, authentication, payment processing, or AI.
  • Clarify regional and setup differences. Describe regional variations or say that functionality is consistent across regions. Give exact instructions for any feature that requires special settings, configuration, or hardware.
  • Provide working access. Supply demo credentials that will work when review begins. Document each account type and include required authentication codes or steps.

Make gated purchase and subscription flows reviewable

If the app offers auto-renewable subscriptions, Apple says to provide an expired-subscription demo account so reviewers can inspect the purchase flow. For sensitive or highly regulated apps, consider a demonstration mode that exposes the full feature set using demonstration data. Do not rely on a reviewer being able to create an account, obtain a code, or make a real purchase unless your instructions make that possible.

Include relevant approvals and rights information

Some apps need supporting documentation for regulated services or third-party rights. Apple’s examples include authorization evidence for certain financial and lending services, research approvals for relevant health or human-research apps, gambling licenses, and rights documentation for third-party content or marks. Determine which requirements apply to the app and the regions where it will be available; see Apple’s App Review information guidance.

3. Complete the product page and required disclosures

The App Store product page is part of the submission, not an afterthought. In App Store Connect, complete the required metadata for the version you intend to submit and verify that the selected build is the right one. Apple’s submission steps are documented in Submit an app for review.

  • Age rating: Complete the age-rating questionnaire. Apple says the responses cover content descriptors, in-app controls, and capabilities. See Apple’s app submission guidance.
  • Privacy details: Enter accurate privacy information for your app and integrated third-party partners. Apple requires these details for new apps and updates; they inform the App Store product page’s Privacy Nutrition Label. See App privacy details.
  • Accessibility information: Review support information for features such as VoiceOver, Voice Control, Larger Text, and Captions, when applicable. See Apple’s app submission guidance.
  • Screenshots: Ensure the images accurately represent the app and match the correct device type. Apple’s current reference requires at least one screenshot and allows up to ten per device size. It specifies at least one screenshot for an iPhone with Dynamic Island (medium display), and at least one for the 13-inch iPad display when the app supports iPadOS. If the interface and localization are consistent across sizes, App Store Connect can scale from the highest required resolution. See Screenshot specifications.

4. Verify the build and submit the review draft

Adding a version to a draft does not by itself send it to App Review. Follow the full submission sequence in Apple’s submission instructions:

What to expect from review timing

Apple reports that 90% of submissions are reviewed in less than 24 hours on average. That is a reported average, not a service-level commitment for an individual submission; incomplete submissions may take longer or fail. Apple also says over 40% of unresolved issues relate to Guideline 2.1, App Completeness. These figures appear on Apple’s App Review page and submission status guidance, accessed October 7, 2026. Apple’s guidance puts the practical point plainly: “If your submission is incomplete, review times may be delayed and your submission may not pass.”
