If your Sony WH-1000XM5 will not connect, first check whether it is already reconnecting to another device. For a new pairing, turn on the headphones and select WH-1000XM5 in your phone or computer’s Bluetooth settings. To add another device, hold the headphones’ power button for about five seconds until you hear “Pairing,” then select them from that device’s Bluetooth list.
Before troubleshooting: check power, Bluetooth, and distance
Make sure the headphones are charged and turned on, Bluetooth is enabled on the phone, computer, or other source, and the source is awake and nearby. Sony’s WH-1000XM5 Help Guide specifies keeping the devices within 1 meter (3 feet) for pairing. If the source device is asleep, wake it before searching for the headphones.
Pair the WH-1000XM5 with a device
Sony defines pairing as “the operation to register the device that you wish to connect to.” Pairing creates the saved Bluetooth relationship used for later connections.
First pairing, or pairing after initialization
- Turn on the WH-1000XM5. On first use, or after initialization, pairing mode starts automatically.
- Open the source device’s Bluetooth settings and search for available devices.
- Select WH-1000XM5 when it appears, and complete any confirmation shown on the source device.
Adding a second or later device
- With the headphones on, press and hold the power button for about five seconds. Wait for the voice prompt “Pairing” and the blue indicator to flash twice repeatedly.
- On the device you want to add, open Bluetooth settings and select WH-1000XM5.
Pairing mode ends after five minutes. If the headphones do not appear in time, repeat the button-hold procedure. If both WH-1000XM5 and LE_WH-1000XM5 appear, Sony advises selecting WH-1000XM5 when available.

If the headphones will not reconnect
A saved connection may be trying to attach to a different device. Sony notes that the headphones can automatically connect to the last-used Bluetooth device. Disconnect that device, or turn off its Bluetooth temporarily, before trying to connect the headphones to another source.
If there is no competing connection, remove the old WH-1000XM5 entry from the source device’s Bluetooth settings, restart the phone or computer, then put the headphones in pairing mode and pair them again. Menu wording differs by device and software version; look for the saved-device option to forget, remove, or delete the headphones.

Use the symptom to narrow down the cause
The headphones do not appear in the Bluetooth list
- Confirm the headphones are on and the source’s Bluetooth is enabled.
- For a later-device pairing, hold the power button for about five seconds and check for the “Pairing” prompt and repeated double blue flashes.
- Keep the devices within 1 meter (3 feet), and search again before the five-minute pairing window expires.
The headphones appear, but pairing fails or they will not reconnect
- Forget or delete the old WH-1000XM5 record on the source device, restart that device, and pair again.
- Check whether another previously used device has reconnected to the headphones; disconnect it before retrying.
- If the source has a saved entry from before the headphones were initialized or repaired, remove that entry and pair from scratch.
The phone shows YY2954 instead
Sony’s support guidance for this specific smartphone display symptom is to initialize the headphones, delete the saved Bluetooth connection from the phone, and pair again. Initialization restores factory settings and removes stored pairing information. Do not choose this step casually; use Sony’s WH-1000XM5 Help Guide for the initialization procedure rather than guessing at a button sequence.
Connect to two devices with multipoint
The WH-1000XM5 can remember up to eight paired devices; registering a ninth replaces the oldest registration. It can connect to two devices at once when the two-device option is enabled in the Sony Headphones Connect app.

Reset or initialize only after simpler fixes
Sony’s model-specific troubleshooting escalates from resetting the headphones to initialization if pairing still fails. Try the less disruptive checks first: verify pairing mode, disconnect competing devices, forget the saved Bluetooth entry, restart the source, and pair again.
Initialization is more disruptive than a reset: it restores factory settings and erases saved Bluetooth pairings. After initialization, remove the old headphone entry from the source device and set up the connection as a new pairing. Sony’s cited pairing instructions do not specify the physical initialization sequence, so follow the initialization instructions in the WH-1000XM5 Help Guide.

Test another phone or computer before seeking repair
Try pairing with a second Bluetooth-enabled phone or computer. If the headphones connect there, focus on the original source device and its saved Bluetooth record or settings. If pairing fails across multiple sources after Sony’s troubleshooting steps, contact Sony support about repair options. Repair availability, terms, and cost depend on region.
