A large discount alone does not show that an offer is good. This checklist reflects U.S. Federal Trade Commission guidance; seller policies and consumer rights vary by location.
How do I buy a phone online during a sale?
Start with your needs, then compare listings against the same requirements. The FTC advises shoppers to decide what matters about an item before buying; in its online-shopping guidance transcript, it says: “Second, determine what’s most important to you about the item you’re thinking about.”
- Set your requirements and budget. Write down must-have features and nice-to-haves, along with the maximum amount you plan to spend.
- Identify the exact product. Record the manufacturer, model, storage or other configuration, and condition. A price comparison is meaningful only when the listings are for equivalent items.
- Compare the complete offer. Add shipping, handling, taxes, delivery charges, and other fees to the listed price. Read the fine print for conditions such as having to buy another product to qualify for the advertised price.
- Check the listing and seller. Review the seller’s contact information and recent buyer comments from more than one source. Examine the photos and condition description, not just the star rating.
- Read delivery, return, and refund terms. Confirm the promised delivery date, return window, refund eligibility, return-shipping responsibility, and any restocking fee before checkout.
- Check payment protection and warranty coverage. Find out who handles problems or refunds, what claim deadlines apply, which payment methods offer recourse, and what the written warranty covers.
- Keep a record. Save the product description, price, order confirmation, receipt, warranty, and communications with the seller.

How can I tell if an online electronics deal is real?
Compare the exact product and total cost, then assess the seller and the item represented in the listing. A very low price for an expensive device can be a warning sign, but price alone cannot establish whether an offer is legitimate.

- Match model and configuration. Check the manufacturer, full model name, storage, and other specifications. Similar product names can refer to different versions.
- Look beyond the headline discount. Include shipping and fees, and check whether the advertised price depends on extra purchases or other conditions.
- Check seller details and feedback. Look for contact information and recent comments across more than one source. Star ratings by themselves are not enough to assess a seller.
- Inspect the photos and condition statement. Determine whether the listing shows the actual item or stock photos. Read labels such as “refurbished,” “used,” “as is,” or “close-out” carefully; they may indicate the item is not in top condition.
- Use price-comparison results cautiously. A comparison site may omit sellers or rank listings in ways that are not impartial, so verify the offer on the seller’s own listing.
- Do not treat HTTPS as proof of legitimacy. It means the connection is encrypted; it does not establish that the seller is trustworthy.
The FTC’s marketplace guidance recommends checking seller ratings and recent comments from several sources, reviewing contact and return details, and looking closely at listing photos and condition descriptions.
What should I check before buying a refurbished phone?
Confirm exactly what “refurbished” means for that listing rather than assuming the label guarantees a particular condition, inspection process, or warranty. The FTC’s marketplace advice cautions shoppers to read condition descriptions and inspect photos; the listing and seller terms determine what is being offered.

- Check whether photos show the specific phone or generic stock images.
- Read the condition details for wear, included accessories, and any stated defects or limitations.
- Identify who is selling the phone and who will handle a return or refund if there is a problem.
- Review the return window, refund eligibility, return-shipping cost, and any restocking fee.
- Read the written warranty terms, including exclusions and how to make a claim.
- For an unlocked phone, verify compatibility with your carrier; “unlocked” does not by itself guarantee compatibility with every network.
Can I return electronics bought on sale?
Do not assume sale or clearance electronics have the same return terms as full-price items. The applicable return window, refund eligibility, fees, and return-shipping responsibility depend on the seller and listing. Check those terms before paying, and save a copy of the listing and the seller’s policy. The FTC’s online-shopping guidance advises shoppers to check whether sale merchandise has different refund rules.
Also confirm the promised delivery date. FTC guidance says sellers must follow their advertised shipping promises. If an order is delayed or a problem arises, the marketplace may have its own process and deadline for seeking help; save the order confirmation and correspondence.

What marketplace and payment protections should I check?
Marketplace protections are not uniform. Some marketplaces may help with refunds, returns, delivery, or other problems, while coverage can depend on the particular seller and item. Before ordering, find out who handles a complaint or refund and note any deadline for making a claim. The FTC explains these differences in Buying From an Online Marketplace.
Prefer a payment method with recourse, such as a credit card or a secure payment system with buyer protections. FTC guidance notes that credit cards have legal protections in some transaction or delivery problems, but that does not guarantee a particular outcome. Avoid paying outside the marketplace’s system or using payment methods that are difficult to recover if something goes wrong.

How should I compare the warranty with paid coverage?
Read the written warranty before purchase and check what it covers, its exclusions, how to make a claim, and which company provides it. Warranty terms vary by product, seller, and location, so do not assume a universal duration. The FTC’s warranty guidance recommends comparing an extended warranty or service contract with the included warranty. Consider a paid plan only after checking whether it adds useful coverage beyond what you already have, and keep the warranty and receipt.
