Why Zorin OS may feel familiar to Windows users
Zorin OS is a Linux distribution built on Ubuntu. Zorin says its Appearance app includes desktop layouts modeled on Windows, macOS, and Linux, so users can choose a more familiar arrangement rather than adapt to a single fixed interface. It also includes a software store and Windows App Support for running many Windows applications, according to Zorin’s product page.
Those features can make the transition less intimidating, but they do not establish that a specific Windows program, game, printer, or other peripheral will work. Check the compatibility of the software and hardware you rely on before making Zorin your only operating system. The exact-title article recommending Zorin was published by MakeUseOf on October 26, 2025, and reproduced by Nsane Forums; its recommendation is an editorial argument, not an independent head-to-head test against Linux Mint.

Try Zorin from USB before replacing Windows
Zorin’s installation guide, last modified October 7, 2025, describes testing Zorin from USB, installing it alongside an existing operating system, or erasing the disk to install it. Zorin says a USB test runs more slowly than an installed system, so treat it as a way to check basic compatibility and the interface—not a reliable measure of installed performance.

- Back up important computer files. Zorin recommends copying them to external storage or cloud storage before installation, because installing an operating system can overwrite data.
- Choose a suitable USB drive and back up its contents. The guide specifies a minimum of 4 GB for Core or Lite installation media and 16 GB for Pro, Pro Lite, or Education. Creating the installer erases the USB drive.
- Boot from the installer and try Zorin. Check the desktop and test the essential applications and connected devices you can evaluate from the USB session.
- Choose an installation path only after the trial. The guide describes installing beside the current operating system or erasing the disk. If you choose a permanent installation, follow the installer’s options carefully and keep your backup.
Can you keep using an older PC after Windows 10?
Zorin may be an option to investigate if you want to keep a computer in use, but the available evidence does not establish that it will run faster on your particular older PC or that every component will work. Zorin’s product page includes a statement attributed to the Municipality of Vicenza that lower hardware requirements were expected to extend the city’s PCs’ lives by 30–40%. That is an attributed expectation, not an independently verified result or a prediction for your computer.
Use the USB trial to check whether your display, network connection, sound, input devices, and essential peripherals work. Then test the applications you need, especially if they depend on Windows-only features. A successful basic trial is useful evidence for your own decision, but it cannot guarantee every device or workflow will behave the same after installation.
