Choose a VPN by checking what it collects, what evidence supports its privacy claims, how its security features work on your devices, and whether it fits your actual use. A VPN routes your traffic through the provider, so it shifts some trust from your internet provider or public Wi-Fi network to the VPN company. It does not make you anonymous or protect you from every online risk.
What should you look for in a VPN?
Start by defining what you need the VPN to do. A service that suits occasional travel may not be the best choice for a household with many devices, streaming, or large file transfers. Then compare providers using the same criteria rather than relying on promotional claims.
- Clear privacy policy and terms describing collection, retention, and sharing of data.
- Independently published audits and transparency materials, with a clear scope and date.
- Documented protocols, encryption details, kill-switch behavior, and DNS leak protection.
- Support for your operating systems and devices, including the features you intend to use.
- Locations, simultaneous connections, bandwidth, reliability, speed, latency, price, and support that match your needs.
How can you tell whether a VPN keeps logs?
Read the provider’s current privacy policy and terms; do not rely on a “no logs” badge alone. Look for specific descriptions of what the service collects, how long it retains it, and whether it shares data with others. A broad promise is less useful than a policy that makes those practices understandable.
The Federal Trade Commission’s 2018 consumer guidance, “In the market for a VPN app?”, warns: “The fact that an app promises security or privacy doesn’t necessarily make it trustworthy.” The FTC advises researching the app, reviewing requested permissions, and examining its terms and privacy policy for data sharing.

Check audits and transparency reports
Look for independently published security audit reports and transparency reports, as recommended in GovTech Singapore’s VPN selection guidance. Treat them as evidence to examine, not a guarantee. Check when an audit took place, what systems and claims it covered, and whether its scope is relevant to the service you plan to use.
Understand the trust shift
A VPN can obscure traffic content from your internet service provider or the operator of a public Wi-Fi network, but the VPN provider routes your traffic through its servers and may handle traffic metadata. Websites can still identify you through details you provide directly. A VPN therefore changes who may handle information; it does not make you entirely anonymous.

Which VPN security features should you compare?
Compare the protections the provider documents and confirm that they are available on your specific operating system and device. A feature name alone does not establish how well it is implemented.
Protocols and encryption
Check which connection protocols and encryption details are documented. GovTech Singapore gives AES-256 as an example of robust encryption, points readers to modern protocols such as OpenVPN, and cautions against outdated protocols such as PPTP. No single cipher or protocol proves that a service is trustworthy: implementation, configuration, app updates, and supporting evidence also matter.

Kill switch and leak protection
A kill switch is intended to block internet access if the VPN connection drops; DNS leak protection is intended to keep DNS requests from escaping the tunnel. Check how each behaves when a connection fails or changes, and whether the setting works on your device.
AMTSO’s VPN testing guidance describes testing a dropped VPN connection to see whether internet access is blocked and data leaks. It also recommends checking for DNS, IP, and packet leaks in different connection states. These are practical checks for assessing a feature claim, not proof that any particular provider passed a test.

Split tunneling
Split tunneling lets selected apps bypass the VPN while other traffic uses the tunnel. That can be useful when an app needs a direct connection, but excluded traffic does not receive the VPN’s routing protection. Operating-system support can differ, so check that included and excluded apps behave as intended on your device.

- Travel: Consider the locations you need and whether the service works reliably on the networks and devices you use while away.
- Several household devices: Check simultaneous-connection limits and support for each device type.
- Streaming or large transfers: Prioritize reliable connections and sufficient bandwidth, and check performance with the apps and networks you actually use.
- Price and help: Compare the current price, supported devices, and customer-support options alongside the technical features.
More locations or stronger security measures may involve cost or speed trade-offs. Evaluate the service on your own network and devices instead of assuming that a provider’s general claims predict your experience.
Compare speed and latency fairly
If performance matters, compare providers under similar conditions rather than relying on a promotional benchmark. AMTSO’s 2025 testing guidance recommends controlling for device, background software, network conditions, internet service provider, and reference speeds, and measuring download speed, upload speed, and latency.
Where a provider offers a trial or refund period, use it to check performance on your own equipment; availability and terms vary. Record the same measures with and without the VPN under comparable conditions so you can judge the difference that matters for your tasks.
Is choosing a workplace VPN different?
Yes. A consumer privacy VPN is a service for routing an individual’s internet traffic. An employer’s remote-access VPN is an entry point into an organization’s protected network, so the deployment and access controls matter as much as the product.

In 2021, the NSA and CISA described VPN servers as exposed entry points that attackers may exploit for credential theft, remote code execution, weakening or hijacking encrypted sessions, or access to sensitive device data. Their joint guidance recommends standards-based, tested products, strong authentication such as multifactor authentication, timely patching, and reducing unnecessary exposed features. Businesses should follow their security team’s standards and deployment requirements; this enterprise guidance is not a consumer VPN ranking.
