Choose Vanguard if you want a frontline role, Duelist if you want to focus on damage, or Strategist if you want to support teammates with healing and other team-oriented abilities. Those labels describe broad contributions, not identical play styles: compare individual heroes’ abilities before choosing a main.
How the three Marvel Rivals roles differ
The official Marvel Rivals hero roster labels characters as Vanguard, Duelist, or Strategist and describes their individual abilities. NetEase has also described assigning a hero to one of those classes as part of the character-design process, then shaping abilities and mechanics around that fit in its developer discussion of hero design.
| Role | Good fit if you want to… | What to compare between heroes |
|---|---|---|
| Vanguard | Be present at the frontline and help create room for your team. | Individual abilities and tempo; the role label does not define one universal play pattern. |
| Duelist | Focus primarily on dealing damage. | Range, mobility, and each hero’s mechanics rather than assuming all Duelists play alike. |
| Strategist | Support teammates through healing and other team-oriented abilities. | How each hero provides support and how much direct combat you want alongside it. |
Choose by the kind of match you want to play
Pick Vanguard for a frontline-oriented contribution
Vanguard is the broad fit if you want to be involved at the front of the team and help make space. That description does not establish a single approach shared by every Vanguard, so look at specific kits and choose a tempo that feels comfortable.
Pick Duelist to prioritize damage
Duelist is the damage-oriented option. The roster’s hero-specific descriptions are more useful than the class name alone when comparing how a Duelist attacks, moves, or handles combat.

How to choose if you are undecided
- Start with the contribution you enjoy. Decide whether frontline presence, damage, or team support sounds most rewarding.
- Try more than one hero in that role. A class label summarizes a broad team function; a hero’s abilities and mechanics shape the moment-to-moment experience.
- Revisit your choice after balance updates. A patch can change a favorite hero’s kit or tuning, so check the current official notes when returning after an update.
The available official material does not establish one role as objectively best for beginners. It also does not provide a role difficulty ranking, role win-rate comparison, or universal beginner recommendation.

Role balance can change with patches
NetEase’s Version 20260911 Balance Post, published September 8, 2026, records adjustments affecting heroes across all three roles and a shared change to Strategist energy generation. It is a dated balance snapshot, not a permanent ranking of role strength. For the latest tuning, consult the official patch notes rather than relying on an older balance post.
